Updated November 8, 2014 1:20 am - During the last few months we’ve been talking a lot about our desktop virtualization and MDOP products and the updates and improvements we’re making based on your feedback. You may remember that in early April, we began talking about the newest version of Microsoft Application Virtualization – App-V 5.0. It was then that we released the first beta and today I’m happy to announce that App-V 5.0 Beta 2 is now available for download.
When we first talked about App-V 5.0, I shared with you some of the key features that make this version ideal for businesses running Windows 7 and Windows 8 – deeper platform integration, a consistent virtual application experience for users, and efficiency and ease of management in VDI environments. And now we’re adding on to the capabilities.
First, we’ve been hearing from customers for a while that one of the apps they most want to virtualize is Office. Today we’re happy to announce that with App-V 5.0 Beta 2 the new Office Customer Preview will now be delivered as an App-V package directly to customers. Now they can roll it out quickly and easily, providing on-demand access, co-existence with previous Office versions and integration with local applications – no Office Deployment Kit required!
In addition to this we’ve also included:
- Reporting: We’ve heard this was something you’d like us to spend more time on so in App-V 5.0 Beta 2 we have included reporting. App-V 5.0 Beta 2 now allows you to report on virtual application inventory and utilization, helping IT departments track software assets throughout the enterprise.
- Integration with the System Center Configuration Manager 2012: With the upcoming release of Service Pack 1 for System Center Configuration Manager 2012, you will be able to manage App-V 5.0 Beta 2 virtual applications throughout their lifecycle.
- End-to-end programmability: App-V 5.0 Beta 2 adds PowerShell automation to the management server and the sequencer. For those IT Pros who prefer to get under the hood you now have complete programmability and automation for virtual application management and packaging.
As you can see, we’ve made a lot of updates and with many based on customer feedback. I hope you will try out App-V 5.0 Beta 2 and I encourage you to continue sharing your feedback with us. Also – for those of you have been using App-V 4.6, you may need to download App-V 4.6 Service Pack 2 Beta 2, available here.
