Just a few weeks ago now the 2011 World Rally Championship season came to an end in Wales, UK. It was an amazing season and Nokia were present on the tour for every twist and turn as the official technical sponsor. Check out the review of the 2011 tour.
What is the World Rally Championship?
Here’s a little run-down of the World Rally Championship for those of you who are unsure about who they are and what they do. The WRC is organised by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and takes place all over the globe; from Australia to South America and the Middle East to Europe (there’s even a rally in Finland, the home of Nokia). For those interested, below is how the first half of next year looks. Not a bad calendar for those avid travellers amongst us.
Across the year there are 13 three-day events that take place on a multitude of different driving surfaces (ever tried driving on snow?) and at the end of the season there is a prize for the winning driver and the winning car manufacturer across the whole year (just like Formula 1 racing). This year Sebastian Loeb lifted the trophy for the eighth year in a row, an unrivalled feat in the motor sport world!
Nokia and WRC
You may be wondering where the partnership between Nokia and WRC started? Well we developed the official WRC Live app for rally drivers and fans alike to follow the live in-rally progress of teams and drivers using Nokia Maps. The app also enabled everyone to stay up-to-date with exclusive WRC content and news on all Nokia platforms, including S40, Symbian 3, Meego and Windows Mobile.
Here’s a cool statistic for you, the WRC app was downloaded by close to a 1 million people in 2011 and many of the teams on the WRC circuit use it to stay ahead of the competition.
