Everything you need to know about the new Nokia Lumia 800 software update

It’s just five months since the launch of the Nokia Lumia 800, the first real Windows Phone, and we already have our third update. If you’re proud Nokia Lumia 800 owners like us, you’re probably eager to find out exactly what fantastic enhancements are included in the latest update. But before we share the ways your Nokia Lumia 800 will get even better than ever, let’s talk about how you get hold of the software.

How to update

First thing to remember is that you have to update via your PC. Secondly, if you’re a PC owner you need the Zune PC app, if you have a Mac, you’ll need Windows Phone 7 Connector. Once you’ve got those, simply connect your phone to your computer with the USB cable and follow the instructions. And don’t worry about losing the stuff on your phone. When you use Zune or Windows Phone 7 Connector to install an update, all your settings, apps and media files are automatically preserved.

When to update

Update (1600.2487.8107.12070) is being rolled out at different times to different parts of the world as well as different operators. To know when it’s your turn a generic message will pop up on your screen as soon as you connect your Nokia Lumia 800 to Zune on your computer. Alternatively, you can go to this website and see whether the software is ready for you.

What the update improves

Like all Nokia updates, the aim of the new software for the Nokia Lumia 800 is to make our devices run even better. One key way to improve the experience on any device is to make the battery perform better. Happily this update just does that. In fact, based upon Nokia tests, and despite being just 1450mAh, the Lumia 800 now has one of the best performing smartphones batteries on the market.  This means we’ll get more time for overall usage and, more specifically for things like WiFi browsing and 3G talk time. And if a better battery wasn’t brilliant enough news already, there’s more.

The extra goodies

If like us you love listening to your favourite tunes on your Nokia Lumia 800, you’ll be very happy to hear, we’re also getting a boost to our bass. What’s more, we’re set to enjoy soft keys illumination for all screen brightness levels, a fix for non-responsive screen when ending a call and for rebooting in certain network conditions.  Combined this bundle of wonderfulness will have us enjoying our Nokia Lumia 800 experience more than even before.

We’re like kids in a sweet shop at the prospect and can’t wait to get our hands on this, but what about you? Does a boost to your battery have you jumping for joy or are you more excited about some of the other enhancements? Feel free to update us with your thoughts in the comments below or @Nokia_Connects
