Nokia Pro Camera, the innovative, intuitive and powerful new photography experience that was first unveiled on the Nokia Lumia 1020, is starting to rollout for the Nokia Lumia 925, and the Lumia 920 and Lumia 928 via the Amber update, which is also rolling out from today.

Pro Camera is more than just an app; it’s a completely re-imagined user interface that lets you take full control of the imaging process and helps to unlock all your creative potential.

Engadget’s review of the Lumia 1020 said Pro Camera was ‘the most comprehensive WP8 imaging app we’ve ever used (and arguably one of the best on any platform).’

Now, Lumia 920, 925 and 928 owners will be able to see what all the excitement is about.

Better and better experiences

Nokia Pro Camera

While the Lumia 1020 has been called the ‘miracle’ cameraphone, Nokia’s previous PureView smartphones, the Lumia 920, Lumia 925 and Lumia 928, also boast innovations such as Optical image Stabilisation (OIS) and outstanding low light performance to pack a punch and capture ultra-sharp images.

With the addition of Pro Camera, Nokia continues to improve the imaging experience of these smartphones even further. Pro Camera also includes excellent tutorials that will help people become better photographers.

Control & Creativity

To mark the launch of the Lumia 1020, Conversations spoke with Marcus Olsson, the lead program manager for Nokia Pro Camera.

We’ve caught up with Marcus again to see what people can expect from the Pro Camera on the Nokia Lumia 925, 920 and 928.

In fact, Marcus reveals that the early development work for Pro Camera was done on the Lumia 920.

“With Pro Camera on your Lumia PureView smartphone you will get improved control in all aspects of your photography,” says Marcus.

Instead of deep diving into complicated menus, Pro Camera offers a range of digital sliders and clear visual indicators to give you complete control over the camera settings:

  • Shutter speed (1/16000 to 4 seconds)
  • EV value
  • ISO (100 to 4,000)
  • White balance
  • Manual focus

As Marcus says, they are not just easy to use, but you can actually see what is happening on the screen in real-time as you change each of the settings.

In addition, other benefits of Pro Camera on the Nokia Lumia 920, 925 and 928 include:

  • Slide to zoom: One finger operation, so you can even zoom if you’re holding your PureView Lumia with one hand
  • Improved focus handling: Touch the screen to focus on an area and manual focus makes it easier to shoot close ups and achieve the beautiful ‘Bokeh’ effect or background blur
  • Video recording: Lossless 1.8x zoom and stereo recording
  • Reframing: Using two-fingers you can rotate the image and there’s also the ability to change the aspect ratio.

The only major differences between Pro Camera on the Lumia 1020 and Pro Camera on the rest of the PureView smartphones surrounds zoom and the absence of dual-capture.

Dual-capture is only possible using the Nokia Lumia 1020’s 41-megapixel sensor, which benefits from Nokia’s oversampling technology. Without dual capture, it also means that the “un-zoom” feature, which let’s you see the ‘wider’ picture even after you’ve zoomed in to take your photo, is not available.

Even so, on your Lumia 925, Lumia 920 or Lumia 928, you can still reframe with Pro Camera without losing the original image.

“The original is never touched,” confirms Marcus. “You’ll still have two images so you can reframe over and over again just like on Lumia 1020.”

Tutorials

An equally important aspect of Pro Camera is that it’s highly beneficial even to people who are photography beginners.

It is a super helpful tool to help you learn about photography. For example, there are indicators for the different settings – make a change in one of the values, such as shutter speed, and you can see how this affects the other settings.

Pro Camera includes fantastic interactive tutorials that teaches and explains basic photography terms – handy if you don’t know your EV from your ISO.

One final but really important point about Pro Camera coming to the Lumia 925, Lumia 920 and Lumia 928: You can, and you should, make it your default camera.

Set as your default, Pro Camera will be launched automatically every time you press the hardware camera button on the side of your Nokia Lumia.

Taking a photo with your Nokia Lumia will never be the same again. Simply download from the Nokia Collection of the apps store.

Nokia Lumia 925 owners can download the app from the Nokia Collection, while people with a Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 928 can get it after they have installed the Amber update, which starts to roll out today.

Happy snapping!
