Lumia 1520: big screen; clever technology

Nokia’s latest and largest Windows Phone 8 smartphone is the Nokia Lumia 1520 – announced at Nokia World last week. Equipped with a six-inch display, there’s much more real estate for people to interact with than ever before.

Creating a complete display solution on a smartphone this size was an interesting project for the design teams at Nokia.

Starting with a simple idea

“We started with a simple idea; we wanted to make a perfect display. One that was large and competitive, but also one that could easily be used outdoors without any limitations,” explains Osku Sahlsten, Project Manager for the Lumia 1520’s display at Nokia.

Osku tells us that there are several ways the team made it possible to see more of the screen in outdoor environments.

The display’s IPS-LCD format means that there’s a greater viewing angle than other technologies allow. Essentially, this means that you can hold the device at more angles and still be able to see what’s on the screen with little distortion. Then there’s the full-HD resolution at 1920×1080 pixels – a first on Nokia smartphones – for a sharper, clearer and more beautiful display.

“Making a display with as little reflectiveness as possible is another important thing when making the screen more usable outdoors, showing vivid colours and deep blacks,” Osku says.

In the case of the Lumia 1520, this capability, Nokia ClearBlack, performance is achieved by sticking all the screen components together to remove the air gap in between the display and the cover window. It significantly helps to make this display more visible in sunlight.”

“Additionally, the Lumia 1520 screen features state-of-the-art sunlight readability enhancement algorithms that run at the background all the time.”

The best viewing experience for the end user

“With this sunlight readability enhancement function, the appearance of whatever is on the Lumia 1520’s screen changes dynamically according to your environment,” Osku notes. It´s automatic, always offering an optimised screen viewing experience for the end user.

The Lumia 1520 is the ideal smartphone to take outdoors for some downtime in the sun. Additionally, it is as well as a great production tool when it comes to creating Excel spreadsheets, viewing PowerPoint presentations, browsing the Web, or even editing photos, thanks to the great optics and the vast amount of screen space available.

The Lumia 1520 also includes a great update to Nokia Glance. On current Lumia phones you can see the clock and indicators for low battery and vibrate when the phone is idle. On the Lumia 1520, you can customise this much more by selecting up to five of the most important things you want to follow – all at a glance.
