The festive season is always a great time for getting in touch with your nearest and dearest.

Happily, with your Nokia Asha 501 in hand that task is easier than ever. Funky and affordable and with a superbly impressive battery life, the Asha 501 is a true alternative for anybody who wants a simple and functional smartphone that will fit in your palm without emptying your wallet. Most importantly, though, it’ll keep you connected. In fact, thanks to an impressive range of social media apps, it’s something of social media masterpiece. Here’s four reasons why.

WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a super popular cross-platform instant messaging service that uses your data or Wi-Fi connection in order to send free messages, images, video and audio messages to other WhatsApp users. According to The Financial Times, WhatsApp “has done to SMS on mobile phones what Skype did to international calling on landlines.” You won’t be surprised to hear then that this year it announced a new daily record of 27 billion messages sent. WhatsApp is available for the Nokia Asha 501 and comes pre-installed on the Nokia Asha 500, Asha 502 and Asha 503 Dual SIM. Hurrah!

LINE

LINE is a free app, and, like, WhatsApp, an excellent way of sending media content and messages to your mates. It’s growing in popularity, too, with nigh on two hundred million users worldwide, and counting. It’s easy to use—just sign up and add friends. What makes it stand out is the unique way it uses emoticons—basically, you can send your pals enormous smiley ‘stickers’ – and the fact that you can have group chats, meaning that you’ll never be left out of the conversation!

WeChat

Ad-free, and as straightforward an app as you could wish for, WeChat is an instant messaging service that’s been doing the rounds since 2011. It’s multi-platform, which means that you can use it on your PC as well as on your Asha 501, and you can use it to send photo and video messages, as well as to share your location. The bonus feature with WeChat is that it allows you to send voice messages, which is something that’s only now getting slowly integrated into some of the more well-known messaging services. We love this feature, as it’s quicker and easier than typing out a long message, and we think it’s got a more personal touch, too. An excellent addition to the Asha portfolio!

Foursquare

Last but not least, meet Foursquare, the kick-ass mother of all location-based social media applications! Use your Asha 501 to check into nearby locations, grab sweet discount deals, check out where your friends have been hanging, and get yourself crowned Mayor of, well, everywhere, with this hugely popular number.  Asha phones don’t have on-board GPS, but that doesn’t stop Foursquare, which will use your network connection to figure out where you are. Clever!

Four fantastic apps, which not only help you connect, but help you connect in style, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. We love them all, but which have most helped you have a happy holiday?
