Take a soccer shot and win a trip to Victoria Falls

This summer, the very best of the beautiful game will be showcased in Brazil, which many regard as the spiritual home of soccer.

Recently, National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez visited the breathtaking city of Rio de Janeiro and captured the way the world’s most popular sport permeates all aspects of Brazilian society. While photographing this vibrant city, he also took some amazing photos, on his Lumia 1520, of kids playing soccer. Now it’s your turn.

THE BRIEF: What Soccer Means To You

We are challenging you to use your creativity and photographic skills to tell us what soccer means to you. We want to see the universal, grass roots aspect of this beautiful game, which can be played by anyone – not just professionals – anywhere, at any time, and in so many ways… Why does it inspire you, why do you love it, why do you play it, or what exactly makes it so beautiful to you? Think setting, emotion, passion, action, fun and the unusual. Capture your feelings in a photo and send it to us.

Your goal: a mentoring trip to Victoria Falls

In return for your efforts, we’re giving you the opportunity to win a once in a lifetime experience. You could be joining National Geographic Photographer Stephen Alvarez on a mentoring photography trip to Victoria Falls, as part of his assignment from Lumia and National Geographic to capture the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The world’s largest waterfall, set on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is truly a wonder, which is guaranteed to blow your mind.

So far, Stephen’s assignment has taken him to capture the jaw-dropping scenes of Grand Canyon in the USA and the otherworldly beauty of Rio de Janeiro Harbour in Brazil. But it’s not just landscape photography he excels at. In addition to wonderful nature shots, Stephen will teach you to immortalise people, their culture and their way of life. Just take a look at his pictures of boys playing soccer at the top of the city in Rio and you’ll know what we mean. Some inspiration for your competition shots, hey?

“Soccer is a universal language and it’s no wonder Brazilians are so good at it. It’s played everywhere here—from favela streets to the beaches.” Stephen Alvarez

Get the ball rolling

Before you kick off, here’s what you need to do. Take your soccer inspired photo on any device you wish, upload it to the competition website and share it with your friends using the hashtag #LumiaxNatGeo.

By doing this, you’ll have the chance to be selected amongst the 40 finalists, who will not only receive a one year subscription to National Geographic Magazine but also get to trial a Lumia 1520 smartphone. If you do make it to the final, you’ll be asked to curate a portfolio of photography, which captures the spirit, essence and beauty of soccer in your country. The entries will be judged by Team Lumia and Stephen Alvarez, based purely on creativity. For more information, please remember to check out our full Terms and Conditions.
