IKEA introduces wireless charging to millions of homes

Charging up your Lumia smartphone will soon be a lot easier, thanks to IKEA’s new range of furniture with built-in wireless charging.

OK, wireless charging is already simple, but the new furniture offered by the Swedish home furnishing retailer means you can do it in style.

The Home Smart range, which includes a table, work lamps, and bedside tables, conceals a wireless charging pad, so there’s no need to purchase a separate wireless charger.

When the time comes and your Lumia battery is running low, place your smartphone on the right spot and watch the battery indicator come to life.

IKEA’s Home Smart furniture supports the Qi standard for wireless charging, much like most of the wireless charging-enabled Lumia smartphones, such as the Lumia 735, Lumia 830, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520.

Jeanette Skjelmose, IKEA’s business-area manager of lighting and wireless charging, said:

“Through research and home visits, we know that people hate cable mess. They worry about not finding the charger and running out of power. Our new innovative solutions, which integrate wireless charging into home furnishings, will make life at home simpler.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a wireless charging table–an enthusiast created one a couple of years ago. But this is the first time an official product has been released in the UK by a mainstream retailer.

The wireless charging range will be available in all IKEA stores in the UK in mid-April and online at www.ikea.co.uk. Products start from £30.
