Today, we are announcing the launch of Dev Unplugged, a contest that challenges web developers to push the limits of a modern browser without the use of plug-ins. We believe that HTML5 and related technologies, in conjunction with faster and faster browsers, finally give developers the tools they need to create experiences that are as vivid, interactive and compelling as anything you have seen in native applications.
We hope that Dev Unplugged becomes a forum where developers around the world showcase their talents and what’s possible and inspire all of us to see where the web is going.
As we look around and see the amazing things that people are creating, we decided that two categories really stood out to us: Gaming and Music. So, in the spirit of the earliest days of the PC and choose your adventure games, you get to pick your challenge!
And if that wasn’t enough to get you excited, here’s a news flash: Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, has opened-up up a treasure trove of content for developers to use to create their HTML5 game! Smashing bad guys is way more fun when it’s with the Right Hand of Doom, right?
And we’ve teamed-up with AWOLNATION and Ra Ra Riot to provide you with their most popular cuts to get started!
To find the very best, we have assembled an amazing panel of judges that features experts in HTML5, design and user experience on the web. We will let community votes help us find the top-40 finalists. The panel will then be asked to judge the finalists according to creativity, quality of implementation and fit with the contest theme.
Finally, what’s a contest without some knock-me-over amazing prizes? After racking our brains and trying to put ourselves in the shoes of gaming-playing, music-loving web developers around the world, we landed on an impressive set of 9 featured prizes and 9 honorable mentions. The prizes include:

We will have a private submission process for 4 weeks, at which point we will open up the submissions to the public so that they can check-out the submissions and vote on their favorites! Once submissions close, we will select the 40 finalists who the judging panel will review in order to find out who our big winners are!

I have to ask though, what's with those 'assets'. I was expecting sprites and sounds, not um...PDFs of scanned comic pages and band logos? Not entirely sure what game developers are going to do with them, but maybe somebody will prove me wrong.
@amtiskaw - great question! Since we didn't know exactly what developers will have in mind, we didn't want to limit them by picking and choosing the kind of assets they would need to create their amazing submission. Microsoft has licensed that entire graphic novel for your use, so you can slice and dice those PDFs any which way you like. Consider them a source that you will work with to craft your sprites, animations, cut-scenes, etc. I hope this makes sense and you decide to give it a shot!

I've tried different formats but the 'phone number' label turns red when I try and submit. Is there a particular format we should enter our phone numbers in?
@DsDev - we are working out some kinks with that page. Just enter your phone number with no punctuation (just numbers, no space, no hyphens, no parentheses) and it should work fine. Thanks!
@Carter - No luck :( It might be because I've set United Kingdom as my country. I noticed that even though the phone number is supposedly incorrect, the page resets my country to 'Select One'. I'll try registering again later and see if it works then.

What about use of websockets, is this allowed? It can be enabled on the browsers you mention isnt enabled by default in firefox.
Yeah, I have problems with the sign-up form as well. When I submit it I just get a page saying "An error has occurred".
@perstilling Web sockets aren't included in IE9 RC either, they're only available via an HTML5 labs extension, and the reason that they're disabled in Firefox is because of a security flaw in the protocol, so I doubt Microsoft will be keen on encouraging people to enable them!
Another quick question. The product should render properly on IE 9, FF Beta and Chrome Beta. Does this include suitable performance? For example, if it runs amazingly fast on IE 9 but not as well on the other browsers, would that work against you? Reason I ask is because IE 9 uses the PC hardware, so if you exploit that, it might not work as well in Chrome/FF.
