Previously we’ve shown you sites that take full advantage of the unique capabilities with Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7. These sites deliver a better web experience and get more measureable results from users through Pinned Sites like:

  • Business Insider – read 57% more pages, spend 95% more time on site
  • Flixster – read 34% more pages, spend 57% more time on site
  • Gilt – visit 39% more often, add 160% more items to shopping cart, complete 45% more sales transactions
  • The Killers – read 65% more pages, spend 103% more time on site
  • hi5 – respond to 200% more social requests (like friends, games, notifications)
  • Huffington Post – spend 49% more time on site

The cost to develop it is also minimal because you use the site you already have rather than build something new. Most sites have done it in less than a day. And today, we are announcing a new site for developers (www.buildmypinnedsite.com) to add pinning capabilities in 15 minutes or less:

Build It With Some Great Ideas

Build My Pinned Site is a tool for site owners and developers to see what a better web experience looks like with pinning. Breaking news catches your attention through trending keywords. Media experiences can be controlled outside the browser. Notifications tell you when you’ve won an auction bid. Games record your stats offline and show you what you’re missing. Web apps like Hotmail feel like a native email client. And the ideas and code to build it for your site are right here.

Build it the Way You Want

Developers build for many browsers and with different sets of tools. Build My Pinned Site has the options to use HTML and JavaScript or do everything with the pinify jQuery plugin in one step. The code only runs when users browse with IE9 and Windows 7 so there is no site performance impact for users of other browsers. The plug-in is also a cleaner way for developers to test and enhance their site.

To get your site ready, all you need is a high-resolution favicon and 6 lines of code. Use the x-icon editor with HTML code:

Or use the pinify jQuery plugin to automate the process. You can even do more advanced features like dynamic jump lists, notifications, and pinning discovery all in one script. We invite you to share your thoughts and contribute to improving this open source plug-in.

Build It to See Results

You’ll want to see the results for your site with pinning yourself. Use your current tracking system to measure the difference just like The Killers did. We show you how to instrument here.

Build It to Promote Your Site

Share your site on Twitter or Facebook with other developers. Or post your site right on the IE Gallery, where 25 million users visit monthly to browse the best web experiences and pin them.

Build Your Pinned Site

As IE share continues to climb, the opportunity to enhance your site with pinning has never been better. 87% of users already launch apps from the Windows 7 taskbar and now they can launch your site next to Facebook, Twitter, and Ebay. When users pin and interact more on site, it means more impact like ad revenue, purchases, paid subscriptions, or whatever your monetization goals are.

Thanks again to all the partners and developers who have shared their ideas (and results) to make this site possible. Start enhancing your site with pinning today.

The export for Step 1 doesn't seem to work for me.  It just opens a new tab to "buildmypinnedsite.com instead.  Otherwise, this is an awesome little app/site.

My bad... seems to work now.  Not sure what happened.  Again, great site!

I like the idea starter samples.  It has me thinking about how I may best leverage pinning in WordPress blog and future Office 365 based company website/extranet.

  • @mikestu - Glad to see it working for you now. Let us know if you have any other issues.
