Today we are launching Excel surveys on SkyDrive. Excel surveys are a great way to collect info from your friends and family to better organize and plan activities. Now, whether you need to plan a carpool, organize a potluck dinner, or get your kickball team together, you can do it right from SkyDrive with an Excel survey.

Excel surveys will be rolling out over the next 24 hours in the US, and worldwide in the near future, so if you don’t see them in your SkyDrive yet, you will soon.

Creating a survey is really easy. Click the Create button in SkyDrive, and then choose Excel survey.

Dropdown menu: Folder, Word document, Excel workbook, PowerPoint presentation, OneNote notebook, Excel survey

You can then enter in the name of your survey and add questions.

New Microsoft Excel survey / Name the workbook where the results will be collected / Create button

A form containing fields for question, subtitle, response type, required, format, decimal places, default answer

Once you're finished entering your questions, you can share the survey or save it and preview how it will look.

When you go back to your SkyDrive, you'll see your surveys alongside the rest of your files.

Once you’ve created a survey, you can do all of the things that you've come to expect from SkyDrive, like sharing, viewing, and editing.

Survey menu: share survey, view survey, edit survey

Then when you share the survey, you can shorten the URL and send it to anyone that you want to collect info from.

Sharing dialog says anyone with this link will be able to submit answers without signing in. They will not be able to see the results.

When the recipient clicks the survey link, they'll be able to complete the survey. Here’s how that looks:

As the creator of the survey, you can view all of the results in Excel and do neat things like embed the results in a webpage, or create and share a chart or pivot table of the results.

A survey is a great way to manage an RSVP list for a holiday party, coordinate a vacation with family, or just do some research. We hope you find this feature helpful for the holiday season, and for many years to come!

    Hi Omar,

This hasn't arrived on my SkyDrive yet so I'll ask here instead. What happens if I have the Excel workbook open that the survey is populating. Will people still be able to insert new stuff? if so, will I see those new rows appear in my open workbook?

    Thanks

Great news folks! Apps, apps, apps!! This is the new Microsoft!!!

    Send us some more!

  • yes, you can have the excel workbook open as the results are being populated

  • Awesome, this looks like a pretty cool feature! Keep them coming!

  • So when will Excel 2013, ExcelRT 2013 be able to create these surveys.? Would be nice to be able to create survey's on Surface tablet. This at least this should be added feature in the SkyDrive Win8, Windows RT app.

It would be nice to be able to embed the surveys (not the excel sheet) into other web pages.

@smehaffie - we're definitely looking at what the next set of functionality for Survey's is, and which versions of Excel we'll make that functionality available in.  Right now, creating Survey's works great on the Surface (and Surface RT) using Web Excel - so give those a try and let us know if you like the experience.

@jigarme - I totally agree! :-)  We've already got embedding of other Excel content (tables, charts, sheets, etc.) so hopefully surveys are coming soon.  You can find out more about the current embedding at www.excelmashup.com/.../GettingStarted.html

  • Please add a facebook share button on this site. Just tweet button isn't enough. I had to manually copy the link of this post to share it among my facebook friends.

    Anyways, great news indeed. (y)

    Omar,

Good, no, great news thanks. Still haven't actually got the option to create a survey yet - and this blog post is 4 days old. Hoping its coming soon...

  • I still don't have this available to me. Where is it? When will it be available?

  • jamiet 45 Posts

Just discovered that nobody can use the survey if I have the underlying Excel workbook open in Excel (i.e. open in the desktop). That's kinda rubbish to be honest....sorry, but it really is. If I have a survey I typically am going to want to analyse the results as people are entering data - if I can't do that, well, its kinda useless to me.

  • Hi Omar

looks great, BUT it still hasn't arrived on my (UK) Skydrive account yet. Any news on when it will be available?

    thanks

  • Hey, might wanna suggest this to your site owner, but your footer says buy Windows 7 instead of 8.

  • To those not having access to the Survey: At the bottom of your skydrive page, click the link that displays your current language. Change the language to English (United States). Now Surveys should be available to you.

  • Has anyone been successful in using this please? I still can't see "Excel Survey" in 'Crate' dropdown. I'm from Pakistan.

  • Marek 22 Posts

Yes, When I select US Eng. as my language than it works....But its shame not to provide surveys for another language...

  • Now here is an interested riddle. I have English (United States) in my language selection. My outlook related country is Pakistan however I don’t see the ‘Excel Survey’ dropdown. I then checked with another friend’s credentials with same settings as mine and it works for him. Note sure what am I missing if anything...

  • User who uses Google Chrome will be asked to sign in to complete survey, while IE and FireFox users are not prompted for signin.

  • It is a very useful feature, but please make it compatible to Chrome as well. I don't want to offend my friends who are using Chrome when I send them a survey.

  • Must the survey recipient have a Microsoft account? Can they use any web browser to complete the survey?

  • @Gary,

If the survey recipient uses IE or FireFox, then they will NOT be prompted for signin, but if they use Google Chrome, then they will be prompted. Check my last comment.

I hope they can fix this issue.

  • hello , one question: ¿in my Skydrive when i search, this option "Excel Survey" it's not showed, maybe because in Latam, its not activated, meanwhile i thinkso....?,

  • Any way to create an Excel Survey directly within a SkyDrive Group? I only see the capability to create a survey in my Files folder but not in the files folder under a group.
