SkyDrive usage has doubled in the last 6 months, now you can select what to sync

About 6 months ago, we released the first sync apps for SkyDrive making it easy to view and manage your personal SkyDrive from the File Explorer in Windows and Finder in OS X.  We’re excited to announce that since then, you have put more and more of your files into your own SkyDrive and in the last 6 months, you’ve doubled the amount of SkyDrive storage being used.

We’re both humbled and excited by this pace of growth.  While many of you have told us that you love being able to have everything in one place and access it from anywhere, you’ve also said that sometimes you want to be more selective with the files you sync to each device.  So today, we’re releasing an update to our sync apps that includes the ability to select what you sync along with the ability to share files and folders right from the Windows File Explorer.  In addition, we’ve just released a few updates to the SkyDrive apps for Windows Phone and Android improving how you access your SkyDrive across different devices.  Between these updates and the way SkyDrive comes with Windows 8 and the new Office, we’re excited to see how fast your SkyDrive storage usage will grow in the next 6 months.

Select what to sync

With today’s release, you can now select which folders from SkyDrive are synced – making it easier to use SkyDrive with laptops or tablets with small drives. You’re in control. If you’d like to keep all your photos and documents in SkyDrive but only sync a folder of your most important documents to your laptop, you can do that – even if your desktop is syncing the full set. You can choose specific sub-folders to sync as well; you aren’t limited to your primary SkyDrive folders.

This feature is super simple to set up. You can set it up when you first install SkyDrive on your PC or Mac or later, when you’re already running SkyDrive. Check out our video describing the feature:

We know people have been anxiously awaiting this feature so we hope you enjoy it!

Share more easily

SkyDrive isn’t just a “drive in the sky”, it’s also a great way to share folders, documents, and photos with people around the world. Sharing via email or by posting links to sites like Twitter and Facebook is simple with SkyDrive, and we wanted to make sure that ability was also available directly from File Explorer.

Now, whenever you’re ready to share a file or folder, you can just right-click it and select Share. Your default browser will open right to SkyDrive.com and you can share your folder or file right from there. You can also view the file itself right on SkyDrive.com, which works great for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files with the Office Web Apps.

Updates to SkyDrive apps for Windows Phone 8 and Android devices

A few days ago, just in time for the U.S. launch of Windows Phone 8, we released a fully optimized SkyDrive app for Windows Phone 8. In addition to all-around performance improvements and some visual updates to better fit Windows Phone 8, you can now search your SkyDrive files and folders and control photo upload and download size. Check it out:

Screen shots of SkyDrive Search and Settings menus

SkyDrive for Android also added several new features in addition to performance improvements:

  • Upload all file types from SD card
  • Rename SkyDrive folders & files
  • Custom sort orders for every view

Get started now

If you’ve already installed the SkyDrive sync app for Windows, you don’t need to do much other than sit back and wait a bit. We are rolling the update out now and your SkyDrive desktop  apps will automatically update, letting you know when the new app is running with a simple notification.

We expect the update to be available to everyone within 48 hours. If you’re anxious and want it now, you can find links to download updates for Windows, Windows Phone, Mac, and Android from http://apps.live.com/skydrive.

We hope everyone enjoys these updates. We’re excited to see how you use SkyDrive and are looking forward to continuing to bring the best of the cloud to your devices.

I'm waiting for Skydrive App for Maemo OS(Nokia N900)

  • SHELL EXPLORER INTEGRATION, PLEASE!!!!

Right click -> Sync / Don't Sync on this PC

Right click -> Copy Public Link

    why it's so difficult?!

  • Now, if we could get sync of shared folders (i.e. someone shares a folder with me, and that folder syncs to my devices) the whole thing would finally be usable and catch up with the competition...

  • whyjoe 4 Posts

THRILLED with the "Share" Explorer integration in the new update (Right-click, Skydrive, Share.) +1 for more shell features!

  • Also, agree with @davidacoder: Shared Folder support is a must for catching up with yourself (Mesh).

And please, add Group Support in SkyDrive Desktop / Win8 App.

Last question: why the Rooms feature in Windows Phone 8 is not a client for SkyDrive Groups (the features are exactly the same) but a WP8-only, not integrated, thing?

Awesome! Now if only there was a Windows RT version of the SkyDrive desktop app...

Will there by an update to the iPhone/iPad app any time soon to change the logo etc.?

  • what will happen to my mesh data? Can it be combined/moved to SkyDrive? Will that space be added to SkyDrive?

  • SkyDrive desktop sync for windows RT please! will it be available anytime on the future? :)

  • Uhmmm... Finally a step in the right direction!

    Now we are just missing:

    1) Reasonable sync speed (it's a crawl right now).

    2) Shared folder sync.

    3) Shared folder search!!! (duh)

    4) Shell integration.

  • No update for Windows Phone 7? You're basically just asking yourself to be left in favour of Apple's ecosystem and Android- and Linux-based devices.

    That's mean.

    Great work guys! SD rules!!

  • Does this update bring sync routing over a local network yet? From what I can tell it still does not; why is that?

Forcing sync to use my ISP's bandwidth when the large majority of the time my machines are on a much, much, much faster local network seems inane to say the least. Not only would it save a great deal of time using a local network, but it wouldn't eat away at limited ISP bandwidth caps for each additional download needed per computer I'm syncing.

What's most frustrating is other services have had local syncing + web syncing for years, so the tech to do so is not unprecedented by any means. And once implemented there is no user change required, they simply just have a better/faster experience.

I'm having a difficult time finding a reason "not" to have implemented it yet.

The closest possible argument I can think of is there may be confusion for the user when all of the local machines have sync'd the files very quickly, but the cloud storage, relying on much slower ISP bandwidth, still needs times to fully sync. That said, I find this argument to be heavily flawed as it would be trivial to change the syncing icons to accurately display their current state: locally available, syncing, and cloud syncing.

So again, if I am correct on my assessment that local network routing is still not used, then why isn't it? and when will it be added?

A giant leap forward with selective sharing! Thanks!

    Love the update.  Two suggestions:

    (1) Add dedicated Music and Video folder support on the website.  Most people have more than just "Documents" and "Pictures"

    (2) Add informative graphics to the big info box that pops up that illustrate exactly what SkyDrive is doing.  For example, when you're uploading a file, change the Cloud in the big box to an Up arrow.  When you're downloading, a Down arrow, etc.  Just a picture of a Cloud with a moving line underneath doesn't really tell us anything.

  • Please give this to us on Windows RT!  I need to be able to sync skydrive data down to my Surface.

  • With all due respect, the windows skydrive is such a huge step backwards compared to the functionality of windows live mesh that I've refused to install the vastly inferior program.  Please bring back the features that put mesh/skydrive/microsoft in a class above dropbox or google drive: peer-to-peer sync and remote desktop.  I simply can't see why the decision was made to make the best product microsoft had to offer into to something just as lame as the competition.  You guys were the best, now you're just as sad as the rest.

We would like to deploy the SkyDrive App to all our University student desktops, these are shared common desktop pcs (several thousand) where we cant have each student downloading/syncing the entire contents of their SkyDrive everytime they logon.  Would you consider adding a stub option (via registry/policy) that only syncs the folder structure and stubs/shortcuts the content?  The option to upload should still exist with stub on completion of upload/logoff.  Obviously double clicking the stub or shortcut will download and open the content.

This is the primary reason why we have not deployed the App; as part of live@edu/office 365 all of our students have a SkyDrive account provisioned.

    Thanks.

  • @BucksterMcgee, I 100% agree with you.  The three big requests I have for Surface is:

    1. Allow Synchronization to Windows RT for Offline Access on my Surface

    2. Use my Local Network for data synchronization if I have another device on my network that has the same data.  It's completely senseless to use my Internet Pipe if that same data exists on my network.  Pretty baffling that this isn't in the product.

    3. Ability to right-click a file and have the ability to copy a Public Link to it which I can then share with others.

  • Nice update - SD is evolving in a good way, thanks!   As others have suggested, shared folder sync would be the next awesome add.  Lovin' what you guys are doing

  • How about Windows Phone 7.5 - do we get an update?  Or should we just crawl back under the bus, where MS threw us when they announced WP8?

Finally, selective sync, that's enough for me to ditch Mesh once and for all, and embrace the Essentials 2102 everywhere.

Now, a few more things that would be nice to have:

    *  +1 on WinRT support, that's the only thing that is actually preventing me to buying one.

    *  +1 on support for shared folders sync

    * Desperately need a way to detect connected machines on a local network and start syncing using the LAN without passing by the cloud. Obviously, eveything will end up there, but there is no need to wait that long when computers are sharing a much faster network already (that was one of mesh highlights). Can't imaging paying for 100GB of space and having to wait them to sync between two computers...

  • Just bring back something like Live Mesh.

Selective sync was much needed! Thanks team

  • gsDogz 0 Posts

Agree with other love the updates, but there’s more work to be done to get back to where mesh was.

    1. Need local network sync

    2. Remote Desktop access

    3. iOS SD app – recognize synced file types. Favorites, Music and Video, Office docs. Either open with built in app, app of your choice or default app.

It's great that you finally have added selective sync, many thanks.

But, we do need to be able to sync folders shared with us.

I miss Mesh option of sync Folders outside Skydrive, I synced a lot of folder from different situation between my computer and my laptop. Please, implement it

  • ReBoot 0 Posts

Still missing an essential Mesh feature. I do not want to move or worse, copy all the stuff I want clouded to another folder. Let me finally sync any file/folder on my hard drive. Mesh could do it!

  • pcolmer 6 Posts

Thank you for adding selective sync. Hopefully that was the last barrier to you then delivering a sync app that can be used with the Surface RT ... much needed!

Please take a look at answers.microsoft.com/.../9c22caca-75b1-4c01-bb00-9cb6947b7315

In addition to breadcrumb on http://www.skydrive.com web-app, please provide tree-view control pointing to current folder (with siblings and parent) on the left navigation pan. :-)

  • I pray for synchronization other than Skydrive folder.

    Great update. My wishlist:

1 - Sync files shared with me - let SkyDrive app sync files that are shared with me.

2 - Add desktop notifications to SkyDrive app, so especially when shared files are synced, the app alerts you that someone has updated or added files.

    3 - P2P sync (Sync-over-LAN)

  • daxaa 0 Posts

I second the need for local network sync and remote desktop access, both features of Windows Live Mesh.  These are the only two missing features that are barring me from turning to active use of Skydrive.

  • abm 268 Posts

The sharing feature is awesome. Thank you.

Can't agree more with daxaa. The features we are looking for next:

    [Desktop app]

    - Prompt share over LAN.

    - Desktop notifications.

    - Hidden files to retain their hidden attribute.

    - Option to sync "shared with me" too.

    [Website]

    - In addition to breadcrumb on http://www.skydrive.com web-app, please provide tree-view control pointing to current folder (with siblings and parent) on the left navigation pan.

    - OCR for images and pdfs.

    - Excel surveys for every region (already!). NineMSN (Australia), MSN Arabia, MSN Finland, MSN France and many other affiliates doesn't have it either. The new features should be pushed everywhere. Everyone got Recycle bin though!

    - Revive the "Windows Live Favorites" application on outlook.com and interface it with IE. So we can access and manage IE favorites online.

    [Windows RT and Windows Phone]

    - Ability to sync files locally/offline.

    - Ability to view and submit comments (like the web version).

Thank you so very much for listening to our feedback. 8-)

Imho those asking for syncing outside the skydrive folder rather give up, because ain't going to happen.

Being a long time FolderShare/Live Sync/Mesh user myself, I understand your pain, but also know that I never got anyone else but me to really understand and use both of those services.

Microsoft has made the choice of simplicity with Skydrive, and as much as power users may regret some lacking features, the vast majority of people appreciate, so I really don't think they will go back.

Just a personal advice which you may not need, but instead of spend your time ranting you'd rather concentrate on either adapting your needs to what Skydrive offers, or finding a competing service which may be more suited to you.

Microsoft could care less about what any us of think....

How insulting is it that in a major roll-out intended to save the company:

1 ) in the MS Pentagon City store, they failed to have single device with 4G, AT&T has 4G Win 8 tablet.

2 ) many tablets have no cameras ( eg LeNovo 12, Dell XPS 12)

3 ) no start icon, even though many major reviewers had criticized that omission.

4 ) the MS Surface is mediocre ..... at best  .... compared with I - pad 3 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

5 ) failure to have Office 2013 available at the launch of Win 8.

A remarkable, colossal failure of strategic planning !!!

@kwvdc, are you kidding me? iPad and Android? What a catastrophic disaster!

There are almost 52 devices announced for Windows 8 in last 20 days or so. You have all kinds of options in hardware; with SSD, HDD or eMMc storage and USB (2/3) support. Meaning you can plug in millions of supported devices game-controller, cameras, printer, scanner, mouse, external-harddrive, flashdrive (the only thing Android tabs support), keyboards or whatnot!

Also, many of the devices have multi-touch support up to 10 (or 11) touch points simultaneously; such as Microsoft Surface. You can use stylus, touch, mouse (even Kinect) to feed the input. How does that sound to the alien tablet user?

And where are you getting the information about the Office 2013? On Google blogs? FYI, Office 2013 RTM was launched 15 days before Windows 8 was released (on Oct 11).

Check the list here newilk.com/list_of_windows_8_devices and pictures at windows.microsoft.com/.../all-pcs to find suitable device for yourself. Try best-buy, new-egg, ebay, microsoft-store, amazon, tiger-direct etc. to get yourself a deal.

  • Sync option is welcome!

  • This is definitely a leap in the right direction, although there are folders that get created in my Skydrive folder on a PC, that should be there but I don't want/need those folders to sync with the cloud and at the moment the selective sync is one way. (folders on the cloud not being synced to a local PC)

Also would love the ability to selectively sync my Skydrive folders to my Windows Phone, and by the sounds of it Windows RT (certainly not tempting me to buy one at the moment!), rather than having to sync them with a local PC and then have the same folder showing up twice in apps (local and skydrive)

  • Thanks! With selective sync SkyDrive is already usable!

I would like to see dedicated Music/Video folders, shell integration and Shared Folders Sync (Shared Folders Sync makes Dropbox very handy for sharing work documents)

  • A small observation with the Desktop Client of SkyDrive: When there is a Junction inside the skydrive folder, and that junction's target isn't available (e.g. it is in a removable drive) the client deletes that folder's content in the cloud (to Recicle bin). Wouldn't be better to check if the folder is a junction/symlink if the target is available and if not, ignore the syncinc? I'm still trying to restore almos 15 GB of data from the recicle bin because of that....

It still is not working the other way around: I don't want to sync particular sub-directory from my PC to the cloud. For example, I have "Pictures" folder and then "PRIVATE" folder, which I want only to keep on my PC, not to be synced. At the moment it seems impossible.

  • Allow Synchronization to Windows RT for Offline Access on my Surface.  I cannot understand why this is not an option.  I just bought a Surface and I'm ready to take it back because I cannot sync my files locally.  Believe it or not, WIFI is not always available!

  • FINALLY.

SELECTIVE SYNC FOR SKYDRIVE IS HERE.

NOW I CAN CLOSE MY DROPBOX ACCOUNT AND FINALLY MAKE THE SWITCH TO SKYDRIVE.. THANK YOU SOO MUCH!!

  • Wellcome to Sync Options..really I like,,www.icahbanjarmasin.com/.../trik-seo-mengatasi-spam.html

  • To anyone thinking of using SkyDrive, be mindful that:

    - It is buggy as hell

    - Microsoft make you pay a full years subscription in advance and will not refund you, even when the product doesn't work (see below response from MS

Use dropbox or sugarsync, or frankly, anything else.

Response from MS support when I asked for a refund because the product doesn't actually synchronize my files:

"Upon checking on your subscription, you were not eligible for the refund anymore as we only have 14 days timeframe for it and you have exceeded 1 day. What I can suggest is for you to keep your subscription until it expires since you already have paid for it. "

  • The Skydrive app for Windows Phone needs to support uploading from sdcard like the Android version does.  Skydrive features should be coming to the Windows app first, not to competing operating systems.

  • A suggestion for improvement  to SkyDrive, regarding thumbnail/icon choice for folders on SkyDrive !

The folders on SkyDrive automatically acquire  and also run through many of the thumbnails from the picture / video files inside them. Though this animation looks nice, it undermines the privacy of the files contained inside the folder, especially when one accesses SkyDrive in presence of others. There is, therefore, a need for 'setting of option' in SkyDrive to select the icon/thumbnail for its folders/files, as is available for Windows desktop files.
