Improved sharing & new HTML5 features for SkyDrive.com

We’re ringing in the new year with a few improvements to SkyDrive.com. You now have a single, unified view into how each of your files is shared so you can more easily control who has access to your files. We’ve also added more HTML5 features for touch devices making the SkyDrive experience faster and more fluid across devices and we’ve introduced more drag-and-drop capabilities to make it easier to manage your files, photos and documents.

Integrated view of sharing permissions

SkyDrive offers a number of different ways to share your files—email, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or simply generating a link to send to whoever you want. As more and more SkyDrive files are being shared, people are often using more than one of these at a time. To make this easier, we’ve unified all sharing-related info and tasks into a single screen. So now when you select a document and click Share in the command bar, you’ll see all the different ways to share the item as well as who has access.

Unified sharing view in SkyDrive

For instance, in the above picture, you can see that my Top Restaurants document is shared to 2 people and I’ve created a view link.

And when I select one of those (for example Chris Jones in the image below), I can then change the kind of access to my document (view only or edit) and also remove permissions.

And of course, you can also share the file with more people by selecting one of the share options.

Improved selection for touch-based devices

If you’re using touch to interact with SkyDrive.com, you can now select an item or multiple items by swiping on the item to the left or right—similar to interactions on a new Windows 8 PC.

In the screen shot below, I’ve simply tapped the item to select it.

Selecting a file in SkyDrive folder

Repeating the touch gesture will un-select it.

Improved drag-and-drop support

In addition to being able to drag and drop files into your SkyDrive, you can now move files to anywhere in the hierarchy of your SkyDrive by using the bread crumb bar as the target. As you can see below, I’m moving a PDF in my Scans folder one level up to the Documents folder.

Finally, we’re also releasing a number of improvements under the hood which won’t be visible to you, but are designed to make SkyDrive.com even faster and more reliable. All of these features are releasing today and should be available in your SkyDrive soon.

  • Amazing improvements. Good work SkyDrive team. I've been your fan from the very start.

  • When will SkyDrive Pro be available for Office365/Office2013 ?

SkyDrive... I'm loving you... I hope every team in Microsoft can enhance their products as quick as possible. For example, WP 7.8, Xbox Music, Xbox Video for RT... Windows 8 Start Screen needs more features, for example a column with my most used apps updating itself, a smaller tile option like Windows Phone 8. I love Microsoft, and I'm not using another platform.

Very fine. I am a fan to Skydrive, .The new additions will amke everybody happy. But when will you provide the facility of knowing how many times a file is downloaded ?

  • hi Skydrive team, first of all, congrats for the improvement. Keep 'em coming! However, I hope you guys can remove the 2GB file upload limitation as sometimes I downloaded ISO file from my MSDN and the size is more than 2GB . I have to use Google Drive as they allow 10GB file upload limit.

    Thanks!

  • The new skydrive is missing several features from Windows Live Mesh so it is almost useless.

I will never figure out why Microsoft would remove key features from a product, re-release it and call it "better".

I can't sync all my files... I need to sync around 180 GB... I need to sync some files only with another computer.  I don't want/need my files to be stored online.  I have 20 GB of files I want to sync only with another computer.

BRING BACK THE FEATURES OF LIVE MESH...

I'm looking at other options at this point... and don't say local sync... for example, I can sync a computer at work with a computer at home, without first going to an online locker.

NOT ALL OF US WANT/NEED OUR FILES STORED ONLINE...

I pay for the extra features that were in mesh... I think a "free" version is great, but if you need to, why don't you offer a "pro" version?

I'm a big fan of Microsoft, but with silly mistakes like this, it gets harder to stay a fan.

    Thanks....

  • , great to see you're still working to improve Skydrive. When can we expect to see some of the key features from Mesh, like direct p2p sync (no cloud storage), remote desktop, and the ability to sync any file on a computer without having to move it to the "Skydrive" folder?

  • You forgot to mention an added feature, you can now save your views from session to session using the sort by menu on the top.  This is a welcome addition.

The "Integrated view of sharing permissions" is a nice add on, but the old solution was working as well and is more or less the same. What I hope you will add is the option to see the list of all people you have shared items with and list all items shared with them (something that will fit down left with recycle bin and manage storage).

The "Improved drag-and-drop support" is very much welcome, keep up the good work.

Also, is there any way you can go to the Hotmail Calendar team and teach them how to do their work. SkyDrive is the best with updates as you make new feature, we are still waiting for a metro style/modern UI for the calendar. I do like all live.com services, but without a good calendar the whole thing is not complete.

  • This is some really cool stuff, SkyDrive is my fav. place to store files right now! ;)

Fair enough, but where's the sync facility for Windows RT/ Surface? This is a huge issue for a lot of users of MS Surface that effectively means they can't access their files when they don't have Internet access, i.e. during a flight.

I tried to do something I thought would be fairly simple in SkyDrive but I couldn't figure out if it was even possible.

I selected multiple photos from my SkyDrive camera roll, looked for the "Share to Facebook/post to new album" option but it wasn't there! I ended up needing to plug my phone in to a laptop as a guest, copying my photos over, then using WLPG to upload them.

This also could have been avoided by using my phone if multiple select was supported!

  • Thanks Omar for this follow up, I have some question about SkyDrive:

    1) Why the shortened link is not retained? If I click "shorten link", then close the Sharing popup, and reopen it, I have the long link again. If I click shorten link, I get a different short link!

    2) Why the link is not shortened by default? It's more handy!

    3) Why we are forced to create the sharing link? DropBox can get a public (read-only) link of every folder and every file by right-clicking the folder or the file in the File Explorer, and selecting "Get Public Link" (3 clicks). With SkyDrive I have to go to the site, open the sharing popup, create the public link, and manually copying it. It's not a great user Experience.

    4) I really miss the possibility to Sync with the Desktop app the files and folders "Shared with me", and from the Groups. Before shutting down Live Mesh, could you please implement those features in SkyDrive?

    thanks for the answers!

In addition to 's points, can you please add the support to sync the hidden attribute on SkyDrive? Also, the offline sharing link support answers.microsoft.com/.../9c22caca-75b1-4c01-bb00-9cb6947b7315.

Finally, it would be ammmmmazing if you generate the QR code on SkyDrive.com and the desktop app as well (create qr-code image offline with save-as-image option).

Thank you for improving SkyDrive and make it usable for everyone !! 8-)

  • Well, looks like we have an option... from the makers of LogMeIn (a reputable company, been around for ages), comes

    https://www.cubby.com/

Includes a feature called DirectSync™, which acts just like P2P (computer to computer sync).  They have unlimited sync (and unlimited file size).

It also syncs files like live mesh...

Bad part is that DirectSync costs 6.99 per month for 100 GB sync to cloud, DirectSync, locks (encryption keys), level 2 support), etc.

The free version of the program has 5 GB free and no DirectSync.

Comes with a free logmein account, so you get your remote computer access... if that is important to you (I use Windows Server 2012 Essentials for my remote access... includes VPN, it is great).

Cubby also comes with IOS and Android apps.  Sprint announced new windows phone soon, but I might have to ditch Microsoft all together and go with Android and cubby... seems like the best choice when Mesh is no longer available.  I'll pay the extra cost.... I need the sync.

I don't feel as upset now that I have a "true" option here... too bad Microsoft ruined such a great product and refuse to listen.

Not one person from Microsoft has bothered to respond to the massive requests to bring back features into SkyDrive from Live Mesh.  And then they wonder why they are losing so much money with online services.

  • Are there any plans to improve the speed of uploading/downloading through my SkyDrive account? Uploading 65GB of content takes an age on a connection with 60Mb+ Upload speed.

  • How can we delete SkyDrive from Windows Live Essentials?

    Thanks for your answers.
