SkyDrive app adds live tiles to keep you up-to-date

Since we released the SkyDrive app for Windows and Windows RT back in October, it has been great to see all the ways people are using it. People are accessing, viewing, and sharing files that they’ve stored on SkyDrive, as well as saving files directly to SkyDrive from other apps. Today, we’re excited to announce changes to how you’ll see SkyDrive from your Start screen.

Start screen with live SkyDrive tile

Starting today, the SkyDrive app from the Windows Store will start showing you notifications on the live tile when you add new files to your SkyDrive. Now the tile for the SkyDrive app will be useful for more than just launching the app, by providing at-a-glance info on what’s going on in your SkyDrive. Whenever you add new files to SkyDrive, the app tile shows you relevant details. If you add a document, you’ll see the document name, along with when it was added, and what folder it’s in. If you add photos, the tile gives you a nice view of those photos.

4 different views of the SkyDrive tile

We think you’ll find that the new live tile info enhances your Start screen and makes it feel even more alive and personal to you.

This new feature will be rolling out throughout the day, so if you don’t see any new info on your SkyDrive tile just yet, sit tight, you’ll see it very soon!

  • Hi Mike, thanks for the follow up! These updates are more than welcome :)

Here are other feature suggestions to the SkyDrive app that we are waiting:

    - A true Offline Sync (on Windows RT you can't always rely on the cache system of the app)

    - See Files and Folders shared by others

    - See Files and Folders from Groups

    - Manage History of the files

    - Manage sharing permission inside the app

thanks, and keep up with the good work!

    Luca

  • I agree with Licantrop0... would be great to have full offline sync for Windows RT, since there's no desktop application.

  • How about the ability to pin specific albums in the Skydrive App?  I'd like to have a shared folder for say my Family to update that would notify me when others add files. I like the rooms idea on Windows Phone, and I use it with my coworkers, but there's not option for this in Windows 8 as of yet.

Cheers to the team. Great work.

  • NICE WORK skydrive Team

(would love to see mulible +Live tiles ) in the WP8 app

  • +1 for pinning a specific folder to Start. +several million for offline sync on RT ;-)

    That's really pretty nice.

I find, by the way, that when apps have primary live tiles that show selected content like this, that I expect to be able to see the content shown on the tile by touching it when I see it, but I've not seen an app work that way so far (I haven't got the SkyDrive update yet.) I have also, over time, have not unlearned that primary tiles don't work that way... every time I touch a tile with content on it and then the app launches and doesn't show me the content, I have that "oh right, it doesn't work that way" moment, get confused about where I am in the app, and this happens again and again. This leads me to believe that the software is wrong... the opposite of the old "fool me once" proverb. "Won't get fooled again."

So: did you give any thought to giving SkyDrive a secondary live tile for getting to recently-added items, and which has this functionality instead of the main tile? (It'd be analogous to the pinnable person tile in the People app.)

  • yeah! You are not alone, it happen to me every time especially with the Photos app. I really wish to have a special pinnable tile that opens the photo you are seeing in that very moment, like the old Photos Gadget in Windows 7.

  • I have to agree with Luca, offline sync is the item I'm missing the most.  So much so, I'm just finishing off my own sync tool for RT.  If you want any suggestions about speeding up the APIs, I can share them with you too!

  • YAY for another live tile in Windows 8/RT looking good so far for sure.

You guys/gals are doing such a good job and building Skydrive into a MUST HAVE.

Keep up the good work at adding more and more features!

  • hey there and thank you for your information – I’ve deetniifly picked up anything new from right here. I did however expertise a few technical points using this site, as I experienced to reload the website many times previous to I could get it to load properly. I had been wondering if your web hosting is OK? Not that I am complaining, but slow loading instances times will sometimes affect your placement in google and could damage your high quality score if advertising and marketing with Adwords. Anyway I’m adding this RSS to my email and can look out for a lot more of your respective fascinating content. Make sure you update this again very soon..  by regards http://mobileinindia.in

  • It would be nice to have a sync of skydrive on my surface.  I have that on my laptop and it works great.  Off course we would have to be able to sync only what we need as storage it limited.  2. I'd like to sync my music from Skydrive to surface.  I can do this on my Win 8 phone through the sync tool, but haven't seen that for RT yet.  Please advise and keep up the great work.

  • Hi Mike!

Thanks for the good news! But, today is February 8th and I canno't see any change in the Skydrive app! I want live tile! I have a friend who have a new computer and he can see the live tile just fine... but in my PC the app is outdated... and there's not any notification to update from the store. I tried uninstalling Skydrive app and reinstalling but nothing happened! Please help!

  • Having a live tile that shows new pictures is a nice touch, but have you thought about adding an automatic preview for office docs that I add? So that when I add a new powerpoint file to my SkyDrive the live tile shows me the first slide of the presentation?
