People put a lot of their stuff in SkyDrive, but photos are the most common file type we see in SkyDrive, both in sheer number and in total storage consumed.
Starting today and rolling out over the next 48 hours, we're making it easier for you to see all of your photos in SkyDrive across all your albums and folders based on a timeline view.
In the timeline view you can scroll down to navigate through all the images. They're organized into groups by event and time. Take 20 pictures at a birthday party with your phone, and then a photo of your parking spot at the airport a few hours later? Now they'll appear as two different groups in the timeline.
The new view is convenient when you want to quickly get to a photo from June and you only have access to a web browser. Maybe the reason you only have access to a web browser is because your laptop was accidentally destroyed by a random camping accident.
We also think this view is particularly excellent for your camera roll folder, since that can contain thousands of photos taken over many years (at least in my case).
If you want to quickly navigate to a specific month, just click the month name.
You can also view all your photos in the filmstrip view, and then watch them in a slide show.
In the past few months we’ve also been hard at work addressing the feedback we’ve received about how long it sometimes takes to upload via the SkyDrive desktop app. To improve upload times, we worked on changes to both the app and the server code. The end result is that in our internal tests, we’ve seen a 2-3x improvement in upload times for photos.
We're also excited to share the news that we now have full resolution uploads of photos and videos in all markets where Windows Phone 8 is available. Now everyone with a Windows Phone 8 can have a complete backup of all the photos they take in their SkyDrive camera roll.
Thumbnails make it easier to find the file you're looking for, and so we're also introducing some changes to our thumbnails view. We worked hard to improve the readability of the files and folders you have in SkyDrive and are introducing new thumbnails for your PowerPoint and Word files.
We hope this saves you time finding the stuff you need. Check it out and lets us know what you think.

Omar Shahine "@Nater If you share to an email address or get a link the only people with access are the people whom you share to or provide the URL."
You're missing the point.
What if I shared a file to a coworker and had another folder called "Maui Vacation 6-10-13" after taking a couple sick days to go on it... They can then go to the boss man and say "Look at what I found."
What part of "People can see other folder (and potentially file) names by using the navigation controls on the page a shared file is displayed on" do you NOT understand.
Service is unusable until this is fixed. It just seems like a bad accident waiting to happen.
I've already just finished moving all my stuff back to Google Drive. About to Cancel my Office 365 Subscription. I'm done waiting. I've been waiting 2+ years for common sense fixes/feature requests and it doesn't seem like Microsoft is paying attention to anything their users are saying or asking for.
The benefits do not outweigh the potential risks here.
For i.e. Apple devices the chances of someone seeing something in a Photo Stream not shared with them is slim to none (unless Public and they got the link from someone else). No one you shared your "Baby pictures" Photo Stream with will see your "Naked Selfies" photo stream. They don't even see the name/caption. That is not the case with SkyDrive (and no, I do not have a Naked Selfies album on SkyDrive, before some idiot bases a rebuttal on that - nor did I take sick days to go on vacation, that's an example).
I already posted this comment on the 22 Jul blog post, but have just read this blog post and realized my comment is more relevant here:
I would like to use Skydrive for storing my personal photos. Having access to my entire photo collection from any device, no matter how limited the storage capacity of that device, is very appealing. However, I am frustrated by the relatively weak photo management options in Skydrive (as well as Windows Photo Gallery). The lack of photo albums feature is particularly frustrating. By photo album I mean a sort of virtual folder feature that would allow a single photo to exist in multiple albums (virtual folders) whilst only existing in one physical folder (traditional folder). Apple, Google, and Adobe have had such a feature for many years in their photo management products and I don’t understand why Microsoft neglects this. Please add to Skydrive and Windows photo gallery!
why without skydrive client for winXP ?
I've been very happy with SkyDrive, even on my laptop (although I'm not running on battery).
I did have the same concern as @Asaad who asked, "Why is there a SkyDrive for windows and another SkyDrive for office"? I noticed that, but thought I was confused as it didn't seem logical. I feel better with validation from others! Does Microsoft anticipate combining or dual-accessing a single SkyDrive?
"It is just plain sad that Microsoft SkyDrive works better in non-Microsoft browsers! Heck, even the nice animated Bing pictures are not animated in IE."
I haven't used IE for a few months. I only use Chrome browser, and I can say with certainty that SkyDrive works great with Chrome, running Windows 7. I also use Google Drive, but it isn't as fast, even with Google Chrome browser. As for Bing, the "animated" pictures are amazing! They display beautifully in Chrome. I don't even use Google for image search now, as I've become so fond of Bing.
Great update! I love the fact that you allow folders to be created btw, but I'm still missing being able to upload existing folders from your computer to Sky Drive. Let's say I want to back up my website on Sky, right? Then you can bet I have tons of folders for different areas of the site, but right now you have to manually create every single folder yourself... and that can be a pain in the but if some files are 12 folders deep (folder 1, 2, 3 etc. folder 12: there's a file).
This is good news. I love using SkyDrive :)
This is pretty cool...keep up the great work.
One thing though...any chance of getting push notifications when a new item is added to a shared folder, ie - a new photo is added to a shared album, everyone user that the album is shared with should get a notification...similar to the notifications within Calendar.
That would be an awesome feature :)
- Photos need an X to close it instead of having to press ESC, very unintuitive
- When you share a photo it should only share that one photo, not the whole folder.
Sorry to say I lost interest in Skydrive after it became clear it would remain limited to syncing only the contents of the single Skydrive folder. I have a lot of content needing backup, and it can't all be moved to reside in the Skydrive folder.
I don't need 'sharing'. I need backup, and currently I get it from Amazon S3.
Has anything changed on this? Should I just quit asking, and forget about Skydrive as a backup solution?
I notice that within "All photos" there is the option to select multiple photos and use the "Move to" feature to move them en masse. however, I'd also like a "copy to" option as well - that way photos will stay in my "Skydrive camera roll" and also get copied to where ever I need them.
As per suges comment please advertise that skydrive displays raw files.
You should make a big deal out of this as only you and Google Drive have this feature - no other online storage service does this yet.
Drew We actually do have PDF viewing in the browser. Prior to this update, you had to have a browser plugin, but we now support viewing PDFs in the Word Web App, so it's accessible to all users regardless of browser and/or plugin availability.
abm Excel Surveys have been available world-wide for a couple of months -- are you or people you know running into issues accessing them outside of the US?
Oh, actually there are some things I would love to have fixed in SkyDrive. Like enable drag-and-drop using IE9! In order to do this on the Windows Server 2008 R2 I have to use Firefox or Chrome. It is just plain sad that Microsoft SkyDrive works better in non-Microsoft browsers!
Heck, even the nice animated bing pictures are not animated in IE (maybe 10, but not prior). This is sad because there have been animated pictures for months before IE 10 came out for Windows 7. Heck, even before Windows 8 came out and IE 9 was the "latest and greatest".
SkyDrive NEEDS to have IE get fixed, otherwise it will continue to be a slap in the face having Microsoft rely on their competitors to take advantage of Microsoft's product offering.
PLEASE - make it possible to display, and search, Descriptive Tags!
As others have said, this IS a great update, specially for the desktop client (because now, at least in Japan, it's simply too slow for real-time work, and I have 1GB fiber at home).
As for the rest, looks terrific, specially for the skydrive camera roll.
Now if only:
- WP7 users were given the "full-res auto upload"; why not Omar?
- Microsoft was to launch WP8 in Japan; why not Microsoft/Makers/Carriers?
In addition to Ronald comments, please consider syncing file attributes especially hidden flag with file contents. (answers.microsoft.com/.../40696d1e-9ee0-47fd-ab01-6bf3a26357d1)
Why can't people outside US get excel surveys on SkyDrive.com?
If you guys want to be ahead of all services out there, allow us to do P2P sharing (ensuring MSFT servers would not be involved for the sharing of the files which are marked for P2P share) and let the developers run TFS (CVCS) & GIT (DVCS) on P2P & non-P2P repositories. You can imagine how many people shall embrace SkyDrive by implementing this application! After all its 2013 and its not a rocket science for companies like MSFT to make it happen (unless you are waiting for your competitors to take the lead again...))))
Are comments going to stay on the picture they were added to?
Could you PLEASE quit re-encoding my PNGs as terrible quality JPGs? They look awful and are still larger than the originals.
One issue though: there's still no very obvious way to get from the film strip view (as shown above) back to the file screen. My mom has called me twice trying to figure this out, and she's right that it's unclear and there's not even an option on screen in the current version, so I just tell her to hit the ESC key.
I see that a "return to all photos" is now present in the new version, but still pretty hard to find. You really should put this blue link in the upper left area, since the whole right side is very very busy with text, and that crucial navigation option can get lost. Or how about aligning with the windows 8 experience and put a big Back arrow in the upper left?
I still think the best ever implementation of photos on a timeline was Microsoft's own KinStudio site. That thing was beautiful.
Nice to see updates still coming through. Speed for uploading is always a nice feature to have. Some features I would like to see and would use are
Folder upload through the browser
View PDF files in the browser
Mile image editing capabilities (even if just rotate, crop and redeye)
Sync-over-LAN (as is available with Dropbox)
Ability to play music and video in the browser (a music player app?)
Easy attachment to emails
Easy save-to-Skydrive of email attachments
Some of the features I like is the keyboard integration and thumbnail view of pictures. I look forward to seeing the thumbnails of files.
I use a combination of SkyDrive, Dropbox and Ubuntu One (among many others that I try but not use on a daily basis) as SkyDrive only works for me with Windows, Ubuntu One only works with Ubuntu Linux and Dropbox works cross-platform and cross-distributions but is very limited in space (2GB vs 25GB w/SkyDrive).
Keep up the good work! Better to see any improvements than nothing!
@ademas : You mean, like this? idwinphone.com/resolusi-maksimal-backup-foto-dan-video-di-skydrive
Thanks for the constant updates of Skydrive. I really love Skydrive but unfortunately had to stop using it (ditched it for DropBox) because the Skydrive desktop app was very slow, unreliable and demanded about 3-4 more power/performance than DropBox. This is bad on a laptop where the uploads should be fast & reliable (in case the laptop breaks) and use only few power (as it drains the battery). I am unhappy with my current solution (using Dropbox) as the sync between the Laptop, Lumia 920 and Surface is a lot more painful (but, again, more reliable and uses less performance). Please update the desktop client. Thank you!
please advertise that skydrive displays raw files. that is a really cool feature that not everybody knows about.
"Thumbnails make it easier to find the file you're looking for"
Not if there are different versions of the same image with different formats. File extensions are hidden for some file types. Here's a folder that contains a version of an image for print (.tif), for web (.png) and for sharing (.jpg), but I have to open the properties panel to see which is which. Why?
Can you please show extensions for all file types?
@Ademas, I'd ask that question on the Windows Phone blog post I linked to.
@Andrew Thanks for the feedback
@Nater If you share to an email address or get a link the only people with access are the people whom you share to or provide the URL.
I just want to give you some feed back , why there is a SkyDrive for windows and SkyDrive for office. Microsoft must merge both in one app come fundamental with windows and office can connected with it when we install office this will gave the user more flexible in SkyDrive experience :)
new design looks great and having it upload faster is always a good thing BUT playing videos on SkyDrive is impossible...it's just not fast enough to play videos. and yes, I have a very fast connection at home and at work so I know it's not my internet speed. It happens on my phone too and I have 4G LTE. please fix the video playback performance...it's really slow. thanks.
When will wifi uploads for skydrive work worldwide on Windows Phone? Been days now since you promised
Please consider these improvements for next releases:
SkyDrive desktop program
Let SkyDrive app sync files/folders that are shared with me.
Add desktop notifications to SkyDrive app, so especially when shared files are synced, the app alerts you that someone has updated or added files.
P2P sync (Sync-over-LAN)
Shell integration: add Right click > Copy Public Link & Right click > Sync / Don't Sync on this PC
Ability to upload folders *including contents* by dragging and dropping
In addition to breadcrumb on http://www.skydrive.com web-app, please provide tree-view control pointing to current folder (with siblings and parent) on the left navigation pane.
Enable dragging and dropping files to save them locally
OCR for images and pdfs.
Revive the "Windows Live Favorites" application on outlook.com and interface it with IE. So we can access and manage IE favorites online.
Add dedicated Music and Video folder support on the website
Add a dedicated delete button instead of Manage > Delete (or right click; impossible on tablet)
Add a select all files/photos toggle when in thumbnail view
SkyDrive mobile apps
Add passcode to prevent unauthorized access
Add option to Erase all SkyDrive data on this device after x failed passcode attempts
Still a worthless service without the ability to Auto Upload from other platforms. Mind as well use Dropbox.
Also, Sharing needs to be made easier. Right now it's confusing. I simply avoid sharing anything from SkyDrive because I'm never sure if they'll be able to see something I didn't intend for them to see, or whether they'll be able to navigate to folders I didn't intend for them to be able to navigate to. All I want is that ONE file shared, they shouldn't be able to see or access anything else - period.
Currently, Sharing doesn't seem granular enough, and this is something they should have addressed a long time ago.
This looks like a great, and welcome, update! So glad to see that the SkyDrive team is working hard to improve on an already great service. This is probably a giveaway as to how I primarily use my SkyDrive, but I'm really glad to see the Word thumbnails be implemented. If the next update does the same for PDFs I'll be dancing in the streets.
When full size photo upload with Windows Phone will be enable in Indonesia?
