What is Office 365 University?

Office 365 University is a subscription for full- and part-time enrolled university and college students, faculty, and staff in accredited institutions. Alumni of these institutions are ineligible. The Office 365 University plan allows you to install Office on up to two PCs or Macs for use by a single person. You will also receive 20 GB online storage with SkyDrive and 60 Skype world minutes per month. This promotion is limited to students and gives you 3 months of Office 365 University for free. What is SkyDrive?

SkyDrive is a service that enables you to upload files to cloud storage and then access them from a Web browser, PC or Mac, or devices—no manual syncing or cables needed. Use your SkyDrive storage and you'll never be without the documents, notes, photos, and videos that matter to you. Just log on to a web browser, sign in to, and go to work viewing or editing.

How will I get 3 months of Office 365 University?

Begin by entering your .edu email address on the site You will then receive an email with a link to set up your 3 month subscription. As part of the set up process online, you will be asked to create or sign into a Microsoft account. This account will be used to manage your Office installs and benefits available for you as part of the subscription.

Once you receive the email, if you’re already signed in with your Microsoft Account in other programs, that sign in information will be passed to your Office set up. If you want your Office University associated to a different account, we recommend you sign out before you click on the link in the email.

You’ll also be asked to select your country and language during Office set up. This offer is available in the U.S. only.

I don't have a .edu email address, but I am a student. How can I get 3 months of Office 365 University?

How do I get an extra 3 months of Office 365 University?

If you share the offer on Facebook via the Share button after you enter your .edu email on, then you will get an email with a link for an extra 3 months of Office 365 University. If you don’t do that immediately after redeeming your first 3 months, you may be asked to sign in with your Microsoft Account again.

I signed up for the promotion, but haven’t received the email with the link to get Office 365 University, what can I do?

If you haven’t checked already your Junk email box or spam filter settings, we would encourage you to verify those.

If you think you may have made a mistake when you entered your .edu email, you can sign up again with the correct email.

I tried to sign up using my .edu email, but I got a message that said “Something went wrong”. Why?

You must have a valid e-mail address at a qualified U.S. educational institution geographically located in the United States which contains the domain suffix .edu to be eligible for this offer.

Do I need to use my .edu email address as a Microsoft account?

No, you can use any email address for your Microsoft account. A "Microsoft account" is the new name for what used to be called a "Windows Live ID." Your Microsoft account is the combination of an email address and a password that you use to sign in to services like Hotmail, Messenger, SkyDrive, Windows Phone, Xbox LIVE, or If you use an email address and password to sign in to these or other services, you already have a Microsoft account—but you can also sign up for a new one at any time.

Why do I need a Microsoft account?

With this release of Office, you use a Microsoft account to start an Office subscription and to install and manage your Office software. The Microsoft account you use to sign up for your Office 365 subscription will be the one you sign in with every time you want to manage your account. For example, you will need to sign in when you install Office on a new computer in your household, or change your subscription billing details. You will also use your Microsoft account to access your online storage with SkyDrive.

Any time you want to install Office on another PC or Mac, choose a new language for an installation, or make other changes to your account, all you have to do is return to and sign in with your Microsoft account.

How do I install Office 365 University?

Visit on the PC or Mac that you want to install Office on, and then sign in with the Microsoft account that you used to redeem the offer. Once signed in, click Install Office and follow the onscreen instructions.

How do I know if my computer or devices can run the new Office?

Why does Office save documents to SkyDrive?

Saving your documents to SkyDrive allows you to easily access and edit them on multiple devices from virtually anywhere. Office 365 University includes an additional 20 GB of storage space on SkyDrive.

Are my documents stored on SkyDrive also available offline?

Yes. For most PCs and Macs, when you save a document in Office, the default option saves it to a local SkyDrive folder on the computer, which automatically syncs to SkyDrive online. You can access your documents in the local SkyDrive folder on your computer at any time, even if you are not connected to the Internet.

How much SkyDrive storage do customers get?

All SkyDrive users receive 7 GB of SkyDrive storage for free. Additional storage can be purchased if needed. Customers with an active Office 365 University subscription get an additional 20 GB of SkyDrive storage as part of their subscription service, for a total of 27 GB of storage. This additional 20 GB of SkyDrive storage is applied to the SkyDrive account that is linked to the Microsoft account used to create the Office 365 subscription account.

What happens when my free 3 month subscription ends? How can I continue to work with my documents?

As the expiration date approaches, you will receive notifications in the Office applications and via email, alerting you to the upcoming expiration. Once your Office 365 subscription expires, the Office software applications enter read-only reduced functionality mode, which means that you can view or print documents only, but you will not be able to create new documents or edit existing documents.

To return to full Office functionality, you can purchase a subscription from or any participating retailer. You could also return to using an older version of Office, or use the free Office Web Apps on SkyDrive for basic editing.

If you choose to purchase Office 365 University, you will need to go online to verify your eligibility in order to activate Office. During the activation process, you will be prompted for your school email address or logon, or international student identity card (ISIC).

What happens to the documents I have stored in SkyDrive when my subscription expires?

Your documents will remain accessible to share and download. If you have reached your free 7 GB storage limit, you won’t be able to add any further documents. You’ll be able to view, share, and download files on your SkyDrive, but you won’t be able to upload files until you buy more storage or free up space.
