Windows 7 Release Candidate Update

Windows 7 Release Candidate Update

There certainly has been a lot of discussion about Windows 7 in the last few weeks. A lot of folks want to know when they can get their hands on the official RC, when we are going to RTM, and what I had for breakfast.

I’m pleased to share that the RC is on track for April 30th for  download by MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Broader, public availability will begin on May 5th.

On behalf of everyone here, I would to thank all of our beta testers for helping us get to this point. You guys have been busy. At the peak of the feedback cycle, we were receiving a “Send Feedback” report every 15 seconds for an entire week. Since then, the engineering team has been busy analyzing the feedback, fixing bugs, and working hard to improve the overall experience. Many of your suggestions helped us refine the new and improved taskbar, the behavior of Aero Peek, Touch, Windows Media Player, and much more. In case you have missed the previous E7 blog entry outlining some of these changes in detail, you can read about them here and here.

Be sure to check back with us next week… And by the way, I had eggs for breakfast :-)

  • I need a little tech help.  I run an eSATA drive in XP  x32, x64 without ANY problems powering the drive on and being recognized after the system is powered up or dropping out after the system is running.  Win 7 x32, x64 doesn't see the drive if I power it on after the system is up and if it's on as the system comes up it drops from the OS after a short time.  I tried 3 different HD's in the enclosure.  XP doesn't have a problem and has worked forever.  I upgraded ASUS's to the current BIOS for the MB and controller. P6T Deluxe V2, i7, 6GB RAM.

It appears to be a bug in the OS since I'm using MS drivers.  I also tried a PCI controller with eSATA.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hello all!

I was hoping to find a positive answer to this question but I guess I was let down & completely disappointed. When managing lots of files, nothing becomes more simple than pressing a button. It's true that you can use the keyboard or the Organize Menu, but that takes more time/clicks if you're mostly working with a mouse. I don't know why a feature that has been on Windows since 3.11 (maybe more) and as simple as just placing a button on the mostly empty toolbar is so hard to implement. Besides, this completely departs from Microsoft's own vision of having to click less, and dig less though menus (Ribbon Toolbar in Office and even in MS Paint!!). Also, right clicking (adds one more click) gets stuck in thinking, maybe for the properties or such, but it doesn't show up right away, so it takes time.

As much as Microsoft wants to make Windows their own, and with their own mind, why not make some (or many) power users happy by providing ways to customize the toolbars just like with Windows XP. Most users were fine with (XP) the simple Search, Back & Forward buttons on Windows XP, maybe because they had no clue they could customize. But then we, the power users, would customize AND recommend to customize the toolbars. Would it be that from now on we should start recommending Ubuntu? It's just for managing files after all. Nothing to do with applications!

I hope Microsoft finds a way to let us work faster (as MS promotes its products - which would also save energy - be green) and be happier (as the new ads - and being green) with just a simple "Customize Toolbar" option on the Windows 7 Explorer toolbar which, the way it currently is, it's mostly empty.

Thanks for providing this blog, since the I have yet to find the Send Feeback link in the Win7 RC.

  • Please do something about windows media player! Windows 7 rocks but MP hits rock bottom! I can't do anything i used to do with previous versions. I cannot even send to burn list the song i'm listening to in the Play tab. I can't find the Libray location of the song to edit its info.

  • Sorry about the multiple posts friends.

The blog kept telling me that they weren't successfully submitted.

    Don,

See if you can right-click on the headings of the list of files that you found and then pick the columns that you'd like to see displayed. Hope that this helps.

I use Windows 7 (x 32 bit) as OS; every 30 min my internet connection is shutted down; to restore it, i have to restart my computer. Then, after another 30 min, the connection is re-shutted down. I have a somme 5 friends who use Windows 7 but only me and 2 of them have encountered this problem. Someone told me to check the network properties in order to modify the time for idle connection but i can't find this options.

Windows 7 is instaled on my D partition; on C partition i use Xp and i never found this problem on my Xp OS.

Quick question here.  If it is already posted somewhere, then I apologize.  I am working on a term paper and don't have time to read all of the posts.  Will the download links on May 5th be in the same place that they were for the Beta download?  Will our current product keys work?  Lastly, will the downloads be limited?  I am very pleased with the Beta and want to try out the RC.  Thanks in advance.

Very disappointed that the music library feature no longer works with drives on non-windows or pre-win7 computers.

And SP1 for Visual Studio 2008 doesn't install. That is just weird.

Well it seems quite interesting because I am a very great admirer of the Windows 7.I have got through a sneak peek of the latest edition released as release canddidate version in the torrent. The boot screen and all does not seem to be very good for me because not even the name of the OS is on the boot screen.Vista also din't have that but still since most of the other operating systems do have their names in the boot screen start up itself,it seems to be the very first fault for me.Windows XP had it..and we'll hope that the release candidate version comes with all the features. Then the antivirus for windows 7 is not working for me ...It tells me to find an updated version of the program even if i downloaded the program from the program site itself.

  •   I wish Microsoft would release Windows 7: Starter as an Open Source that would take on Ubuntu or any other Linux-based operating system.

Just think of all the cool stuff people can write for Win7 and who knows may be Microsoft could buy the real cool ones.

Then people could install Win7: Starter on Netbooks and you could kiss Linux-based operating systems good bye.

    Just A Thought.

  • ron62, I believe all MSDN Subscribers have access to the RC today not just MSDN Plus Subscribers.

OMG. I gotta say.....I am VERY IMPRESSED!!!! The Beta version took about 35 minutes on a GREAT machine to install. This version took less than 10 minutes. The speed is incredible and the compatibility left my mouth wide open. Before I couldnt even install Visual Studio and Logmein etc...Now not only does it install, but VS2008 which is a hogger, opens up MUCH faster than XP and Vista. So far I havent encountered anything which I was disatisfied with.

Err Brandon should that be Technet /MSDN PLUS subscribers only??

  • The Windows 7 RC should be available for TechNet and MSDN *subscribers* only today. Starting on May 5th we will make it available to everyone else. Stay tuned.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

  • I am in MST and when I go to the download section for TechNet it doesn't show up ... it takes me to a different page and I was wondering if anyone else is having the same problem? and if so do you know when they are going to fix it?

Hi, If you have have a Technet or MSDN subscription it means you can download it today.

If you do not have either subscription, on Tuesday you will be able to download Windows 7 RC Free of Charge.

    Most likely from: www.microsoft.com/.../default.aspx

Hope that helps clarify it for you. :-)

  • What does this mean to the Window 7 Beta users? Are you saying that we can download the new Candidate and will this be at a cost or will Microsoft automatically download this to us or What?

  • Yup Downloading now! Awesome, im excited! I hope my Google post didnt make anyone mad! haha

  • its on MSDN as of a few minutes ago....

  • its on MSDN as of a few minutes ago....

  • This is crazy. I cant find it anywhere on Technet. Ive got all my (7) environments wiped, ready for an RC, and m$ hasnt had its coffee yet. I assume we are waiting for PST. Since Redmond is in the PST. I can tell you this. If Google said you could download something from them on April 30th, then they would not only include a time, but it would go up early, a day or so. Get with it, M$.

  • I cant find it on TECHNET anywhere, not even the New downloads. It would really be funny if they waited until 23:59 GMT+0 haha and then posted it.

Same here. 9:00AM. Don't see RC on MSDN ;-(

  • Should be interesting to see whether the device recog works better than beta 7000. I found the only way to get linksys wireless working was to install using a 64bit dlink --- then attach the linksys wusb300 and let W7 autosense the card ,fetch the driver from microsoft through the working dlink. Then disconnect the dlink once the linksys works. Hmmm... also like to see an improvement in the networking as I was using several machines shipping large amounts of data between them... occasionally hosing the sending machine to a point where it needed restart. Lastly - IE8 gets lost and freezes --- occasionally requiring a reboot. As for performance - all my installations performed better than xp by a healthy margin. I have a tablet that was rendered useless  by xp - W7 makes it usable again. SO all in all W7 was about 25-30% faster than XP ---- and its BETA!

Still awaiting it on Technet. It's nearly 1400 BST. Why they can't release it by local country at 0001 on the day of release is beyond me.

I have been using Win 7 build 7000 for about 3 weeks and as a very old guy who has used every Windows OS from day one I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. The install on a empty HD was estonishing in the minimum time it took to get to the Widows screen. I think my install was less than 15 minutes. Win7 installed all the drivers flawalessly and even installed my hard to find audio card drivers. I also love the menu on the install that asked if this was a home computer, business computer or a network computer. All of the definitions were in lay terms and easily understood by someone starting out.

I'm looking forward to the 7100 RC release and will test it again from a DVD to full install. If thei version of Windows continues to excite me I actually may upgrade from Windows 98.... LOL Only kidding. I'm running WinXP Home. Anyonbe want to buy Win Vista? Installed once and removed once all in the same day.

  • Hello I have a some clients who are disabled and are big PC gamers. How will Windows 7 help them when they can afford to upgrade. I know some will not be able to due to they are either at Windows 98SE, or 2000. These people are on limited fixed incomes and cannot afford to always upgrade. Yes they are behind on some of the newer games out there too. I can only do so much. Thank you for taking some of your precious time in reading this message.

  • Waiting for the new beta of Win7.

I hope we will experience new features leading MS for the following 5 years!

  • A funny thing happened the other day, I really dislike the default Window 7 Beta Desktop background ...I thought the fish didn't quite make the cut.  However since my desktop backgrounds cycle it came back up and my 4 and 5 year old were impressed because it looks just like WaterTree their Beta Fish.

They also like Windows 7, and are getting pretty good at using it.  They want to kick me off it all the time, so I guess that's one sign of a good product.

  • All, please stay tuned. We plan to talk more about the Windows 7 RC, including specifics like languages, soon.

kotalo0714, I'm not familiar with the term "TMM" - could you elaborate?

fuchueh, please submit your feedback through the Feedback tool in the Windows 7 Beta. That has been the proper way to submit feedback for Windows 7.

  • HI Bradon:

I come from Taiwn and I'm  working for a NB OEM company.

May I ask you a question? We didn't find Windws TMM in windows7, will it release in RC version or change another name/function?

    Thanks for your help.

I love Windows 7 - Can't wait for it.  Would it be too much to ask to have the address bar in Windows Explorer look like that of XP?  Or at least a setting that can give me that behavior?

This is what I'm talking about:  blog.kellybrownsberger.com/.../39.aspx

If I had that, I do think I'd call Win7 near flawless

  • i can't wait to see that

  • I am currently dual booting Windows XP and Windows 7 Build 6801, and since I'm using the older build of the beta, I seem to be having some issues. I'm extremely anxious to have the RC build come out so I can get one step closer to having the full Windows 7 OS on my system.

First at all there is a problem inherited from Vista, when the system is installing and the MBR is for example made by Linux it does not know how to remove it, make it active and install on the partition. XP could wipe out all things and make it ready for itself, VISTA and W7 does not know how to do it. So give me FDISK or GUI to it!!! I suggest to fix it. Sounds crapyp that I can't install system on blank disk or disk prepared by Linux, OsX, Unix, etc...

Second it is fast, like my UBUNTU...so great job, I just hope it is going to be stable like my UBUNTU. Vista is slow, on my 2x2.2GHz 4G Ram and ultra fast chipsets is is just slow to death. W7 is flying so I am very impressed. I hope Microsoft is not going to change it so I do not change my opinion about the product. I suggest you let people to customize the view experience, so far it is for IDIOTS and is making me a bit frustrated that I can't set it up as I wish. I presume it is Beta problem and it is going to be resolved in full release. Please remember that some users like to have simple, fast and functional GUI instead of 3D slow not functional demo unfitting into any professional work.

Regards and all best, so far great job...

  • I can barely contain my glee! I'm really looking forward to putting the RC through it's paces, and seeing how Win7 has changed.

Even my lappy is getting the RC, and that's saying a lot coming from me. ;-)

  • When i'm trying to remove a flash drive formated with NTFS

it shows the device in use

but no programs is accessing it

    but FAT32 works fine

it happens both in Beta & RC1

  • I've been using Server 2008 as my dev PC and am dependent on Hyper-V for app testing, but the sticky taskbar items in 7 make my mouth drool! Never underestimate the power of muscle memory. Choosing between Vista and 2008 was easy; now the choice is more difficult. Congrats to the vast improvement!

  • The real question is, are Microsoft's servers prepared for the onslaught of interested uses for the RC of Windows 7? This release has to be easily the most eagerly anticipated/hyped/wanted OS in Microsoft's history. EVER.

Hope Microsoft is preparing well for this as well.

  • I would love to get the latest "RC" version for "MS Windows 7" I have been doing the testing for the Beta version....Its excellent. The touch interface is so great. Really a new milestone for the team and something really good to look forward... Team MICROSOFT you guys Rock!

So much for the most closed locked down beta program ever for an operating system. Comes free with a magic wand which when waved casts a spell so strong on the user that he'll give up anything for a copy of the RTM code.

Could you confirm languages supported for RC? Spanish included?

    Thanks

Hey - new to the Windows Blog - and techie enuff (UX designer), but NOT a developer or a previous beta-tester of Windows 7.  I've got a new macbook pro on order arriving next week and want to make it dual boot since I need both OS's for my work, and since I'd really like stop dragging two notebooks around.

By saying that this "RC" will be available to the general public - does that mean there will be some way for me to download and use it prior to the retail release?

    I'd love to skip Vista.

I'm an old, retired home user who has never before tried to use a beta program like this, and I want to say 'Thank You' to all of you who have made this possible, and made it fun. This has been a great experience, and I've learned a lot from it.

I look forward to the RC release, and like others have said here, I think Windows 7 is the best yet from Microsoft. I do wish the new O/S would keep that 'Send Feedback' link, though. I think that might be very useful. I know you get a lot of junk over it, but maybe a system like Google uses could help strain that out of the mix for you, and just save the relevant stuff..... ( just a thought, Folks...)

Thank You once again for making this available for us.

  • Cool, cant wait for May 5th, hopefully the RC will be as great as the Beta.

The question then is when will the RC will expire, and when RTM will be available. lots of cool news, and more to come.

Everything's moving along faster than expected, knowing my luck the Windows 7 launch events will co-inside with my cross country move with the wife and kids in June/July. Who knows, I might be able to convince her to park the Uhaul in the middle of Iowa for a day... free muffins?

  • Please bring back the color palette behavior from the old Paint. Before Windows 7, clicking a color in the color palette changes "Color 1", right clicking a color changes "Color 2". One click to change either Color 1 or Color 2. Now with Windows 7's new Paint, it takes two clicks to change Color 2 - left clicking on Color 2, left clicking on the color. Very unintuitive.

I really like the look and feel of the new Windows 7 and if the RC1 improves on that even further GREAT! I still think that your Media Player and Media Centre need to support DTS Audio, I have used Power DVD 9 and it's just not as good as your product and to be quite honest i would prefer not to use third party software because not all of it measures up or is totally compatable, and with everything going over to Blueray it would be Great if Microsoft were ahead of the curve on this one! • @Bartez

yea, i also saw it yersterday, that seems to a critical issue, luckily the exploiter must use my PC physically, but with the time who knows, a Remote code may exploit da thing :O ......

and a i was wondering Brandon, Im really worried, How the hell do the Windows 7 copies get leaked ? and why arent they doing sothing about it ;!

Thanks for the first credible, authoritative time-line, Brandon.

I can stop checking Technet and MSDN every 9 minutes. (When will be there, Mom? Are we there yet? Are we now? Are we?)

I remember the Vista RC days, back when you were posting on the Hive.

You've come a long way in that short time, and the quality of your posts shows it. Congratulations.

  • I hope this version is now available in Spanish language ...

  • ^A clean install is the way to go.

Brandon: Receiving a “Send Feedback” report every 15 seconds is amazing, and just shows the enthusiasm for Windows 7. I bet MS also didnt expect this. I wonder how Aero Peek has been modified ...

  • Hi, was unsure about the Release date, at last its on May 5th,

    Some questions :

1.Will there be a download limit for the RC ?

2.Whats the best way to install this, upgrade from 7000 bete or a clean install ?

3.and at the end of the RC how are we to do an upgrade, just needs clarification so that i wont end up with deleteing and reinstalling everything over and over again :)

thank you, the 7000 beta was awsom and waiting for the new featured 7s RC

  • Great news!  Why it takes so long (as if a few days is a long time) still puzzles me, but great news nonetheless...

  • I hope you enjoyed the eggs. I can not wait for the RC to come out, going to Walgreens to get a new three pack of blank DVD will be worth it. Will the download experence be like it was to download the beta (Your own manager) or will I be able to use downThemall on Firefox? Can not wait to use the ISO burner in 7 to burn 7, and it not to be illegal, but helpful.

    Thanks for the hard Work,

A Guy running Windows 7 Build 7000 on a four year old Dell notebook. (With Aero and Glass)
