Internet Explorer 9 Hardware Acceleration and Third Party Hypervisors

Internet Explorer 9 Hardware Acceleration and Third Party Hypervisors

Working with VMware, Microsoft has identified an issue within Internet Explorer 9 that may prevent third party hypervisors from being able to take advantage of IE9's hardware acceleration feature. As a result, IE9 will default to software rendering when running in some virtual machines. Internet Explorer 9 interacts with non-Microsoft hypervisors differently than earlier versions of Internet Explorer. Microsoft is working on a prioritized update to Internet Explorer 9 and plans to make it available in the coming weeks to ensure that customers using third party hypervisors, such as those offered by VMware and other vendors will have the best possible experience.

This is great news. Please consider incorporating an option in Advanced menu to carry out this task: www.mydigitallife.info/.../force-enable-gpu-hardware-acceleration-graphics-rendering-on-old-gpu-in-ie9 with ease. So more and more people can avail the power of GPU while browsing. Some people are still using IE9 (and there must be more), because the algo to determine the GPU's ability for h/w acc is apparently not good-enough: connect.microsoft.com/.../html5-base-tag-corrupted  or rehash  the algorithm so i don't skip any GPU during installation.

What about VMWare Workstation which also allows accelerated graphics and Aero in the VM?

  • Also fix the high CPU usage in mshtml.dll->CMarkup::ClearRunCaches and mshtml.dll->CTreeNode::VoidCachedInfo if not done in the RTM Build

VMware Fusion and VMware Workstation require Microsoft to release the Internet Explorer 9 update in order to use IE9's hardware acceleration feature.  We look forward to the update being released soon!

[Correction] The connect ticket I mentioned earlier was supposed to be this one: connect.microsoft.com/.../auto-tuning-of-hardware-acceleration

In host, with 3D hardware acceleration (DX 9), IE9 disabled acceleration feature... :/
