Inside the Indestructible World of Rugged PCs

Most PCs are built to last. They can take the occasional bump and bruise, a bit of water spilled across the keyboard, and some jostling in a backpack. But what if you need something sturdier? Something that can be dropped, soaked, or dragged through the mud?

Then you need a ruggedized PC. These things are built to work in the nastiest & toughest conditions and they’re often used by the military, law enforcement, and professionals in a wide variety of tough fields like construction and heavy industry.

To show you exactly how tough these PCs are, Lee Sabow and I shot a video where we put some of our favorite business-rugged and fully-rugged PCs to the test. Check it out:

Pretty impressive, right? Rugged PCs are a great choice if you’re hard on your gear. For reference, these are the PCs we beat up in today’s video:

wow, and everyone is looking forward to IPad or whatever-pad. I was too until I watched this video...and for what they can be put through, you don't need a degree in demolition engineering to guess what my next gadget will be. I will go with Lenovo X220 as my current is laptop is Lenovo. Never change a winning formula.

  • My two boys walked in as I was watching this video. Now they've got it in their heads that they can play tennis and build sand castles with my laptops! Oh well, with them around I should probably only be using a ruggedized laptop anyway.

I actually prefer the Dell XFR to the Panasonic.  Why isn't it listed here?

  • Great post on the variety and flexbility of a PC Ben, now gather up a bunch of PC tablets of varying capbilities and sizes and do a video about the AWESOMENESS of a PC Tablet, I'm sure you can do better than what I did.

  • @frankwick: The rugged XFR is a great PC - I just didn't have access to one for the shoot.

@TroyPatee: This sounds like the perfect excuse to make your old PC unusable so you can buy a new one!

  • I've noticed that I never see Macs in businesses really. They always use stuff like this. I wonder where the idea that "macs are superior" came from.

Hi Ben. Great videos. MobileDemand is another rugged tablet PC you might want to check out. We've also done some torture tests. See the tablet taking a spin in an industrial dryer and check out this version of making a salad "on" a tablet. We'd love to see what you could do with the xTablets.
