Today, many SkyDrive users may notice an automatic update to SkyDrive for Windows (Version 16.4.6003.0710).
Most of the changes in this update aren't really visible. Millions of people depend on SkyDrive to automatically sync files, so as with most updates, this one improves performance, reliability, and compatibility of SkyDrive.
However, there are a couple things you might notice in this update:
Many people asked for a simple way to check at a glance whether their SkyDrive is in sync. With this update, when you click SkyDrive in the system tray, a small status window appears. It lets you know if SkyDrive is up to date, and gives you the time at which SkyDrive was last updated.
If SkyDrive is still syncing, you'll also see the number of megabytes and files you have remaining to sync.
We’ve also added new options in the context menu that you see when you right-click (“View sync problems” and “Report a problem”) to make it easier to identify and report issues.
We designed SkyDrive to provide Windows customers access to important files anywhere. With the upcoming release of Windows 8, the time was right to redesign the SkyDrive logo. The refreshed logo is a natural evolution of the work we’re doing across Microsoft to deliver a more consistent experience across all of our products.
As we update SkyDrive for other platforms, apps, and devices, you'll see the updated logo appear more broadly. We will also be making it available to partners and developers.
We hope you enjoy the update, and we look forward to your continued feedback.
I think that the icon saying Skydrive is up to date must be a metro icon like others
Oh come on, how long are we going to wait for ability to disable sync of chosen folders? There are files that I want to put in the cloud so they don't waste space on my HDD. Now I have to put them on Dropbox or Google Drive becuase SkyDrive app syncs everything ...
I am not installing this Desktop app till it gets the ability to selectively sync folders! What is the purpose of a cloud service if it doesn't differentiate between the Cloud & the local disk.
When is Microsoft going to release an Android SkyDrive app? Why does Apple get the app before Google? Enough of the bias in release these apps. There are more Android phones out there than iPhones. There's no reason we should have settle for inferior third party SkyDrive apps while Apple users have the Microsoft version.
And an option to select what folders syncs to PC??
Is there a way to force update the app?
What does it sync if you cannot choose?
Windows XP client please, no reason not to if Android and iOS are supported.
I don't understand this update. I already could see the SkyDrive icon and look for that little bar moving underneath the logo to see that it is synchronizing. Hovering over it I can see how much has been uploaded out of how much it needs to upload and estimated time.
Now I have that I have to click around? Unless this is a Metro button (launcher?) I don't see the benefit.
Why not work on increasing the speed or building a Sync-over-LAN feature similar to Dropbox so my Gigs of updates quickly get synchronized among all of my SkyDrive enabled systems quicker than if I have to upload & download from the Internet!
Or even speed up the access when Mapping a drive to the SkyDrive folders so it is actually a viable alternative that nobody else has?!
Heck, if I could access it via Linux (Synchronized or as a mounted directory) then that would help me reduce the number of services I use down to one!
I don't get the complaints about selective folders synchronizing. It all exists under a SkyDrive folder so I use Libraries that point to the specific folders in my SkyDrive folder. If I don't want anything to sync, I don't put it in there. Now if SkyDrive were to synchronize the folders in my <user> directory then I may want to select which folders to synchronize or not.
Selective folder synchronizing is available with SugarSync (https://www.sugarsync.com/, 5GB free) and if you only want to store files online you can look at Anmazon Cloud Drive of Box (formerly Box.net); neither of them have a synchronizing client, plus Amazon Cloud drive has a client that enables dragging a file into it and it uploads that file to the Amazon Cloud drive.
Using Dropbox or Google Drive to do something different than SkyDrive doesn't make sense since all 3 operate in a similar manner with a specific folder synchronizing with the cloud and other computers. SkyDrive and Google Drive have the added benefit of cloud application allowing to edit the files.
@all - sorry this release does not address your concerns related to sync being an all or nothing proposition. We don't have anything to announce related to new sync features at this time, but the request is noted.
I am using Windows 8 Release Preview. What do I need to do to receive this update? Will it be automatically updated?
my skydrive icon in systray is completely white (bug ?). The new status Windows wasn't necessary, it was better before
@Omar did your SkyDrive team notice that there are time out problems with the skydrive website??? Will it be fixed??
There is a problem with the SkyDrive website!!!
I have a folder with 3GB of photos and small videos and when a friend with whom I have shared this folder tries to download them by clicking this option on the SkyDrive website (you will download the whole folder as a .zip) he gets a time out around the 1.4 GB!! There is no way for him to download this folder with photos I shared with him in once he can only get them by clicking them one for one, this is not an option!!! Please fix this!
Did you just forget to update the icon in the explorer guys? :) BTW nice job, keep up the good work! ;)
metrofan download the app from the link they posted in this article
@pzstm i removed the old skydrive icon from explorer before installing the new one now i have the new icon
I've just restarted my PC and now it's ok ;)
Selective Sync Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase!
"Selective Sync Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase!"
yes! This is the BLOCKER why I'll never use the SkyDrive app.
Add this next, please.
The application is failing to connect after the update. I am using Windows 8 Realese Preview and I'm connecting with an account Windows Live in Skydrive different from what I do I log in to Windows. Sorry for my bad English.
We really need Selective Sync!
Could you perhaps update that tick symbol to use a nice clean Metro style one?
While you are at it, could you get the Windows Team to replace all their Desktop Icons and desktop UI colours to make them more Metro please!!!!!!!!!!
im not getting selective sync buzz =/
if you want a specific folder to sync just drag it to Skydrive icon on explorer
I like most of the new logos from Microsoft, but really prefer the old Skydrive version.
@riseagn It's not about syncing a specific folder, but not syncing it. If you have 125GB on SkyDrive and you are using over 100GB, it's not a problem on a PC with a 500GB/1TB HDD. But if you have a laptop with a 128GB SSD, you would like to sync just documents and some other folders, but not your whole SkyDrive.
The upload and download speeds are still really slow; especially compared to Google Drive.
We are waiting for selective sync not for a "nice" logo
I think what will be good to get links for sharing from the context menu in Skydrive folder (as in DropBox) Thank you.
We need to be able tot just choose which folders on our hard drive to sync. I guess that's what people call Selective Sync? I've got 15GB of photos in my Photos folder. But guess what? Now I have 30GB cause I have to copy them over to Skydrive too. Silly! Lucky I have like 50 Gozillabytes of space on my hard drive.
One more thing--when does Metro UI come to Hotmail-Calendar-Skydrive etc?
Maybe I'm missing something but you DO have the ability to choose what syncs... either put it in the User\SkyDrive folder or don't. Tada! :)
OK, OK, I get it, that only solves the storing locally but not syncing to cloud issue, not the other way around, which would be nice, but they've heard the request and they've previously said it's something in the pipeline. Relax already.
So how does one get the update if it did not come automatically. Your post says that "many ... may notice". I didn't get it.
I agree that it would be nice if Microsoft included an option for more sophisticated users to add whatever folders we wanted to our SkyDrive (like Live Mesh used to allow), but they opted for simplicity to appeal to a broader audience, which is perfectly understandable when rolling out this sort of technology to a customer base that is still largely ignorant of such concepts as file systems and cloud services. Perhaps they will add this feature in the future when the general population because more comfortable with computer technologies. For now, simple and straight-forward is the best strategy to promote broad uptake and acceptance.
For the more savvy users, here's a simple solution for Windows Vista and newer operating systems. I'm including more details that you probably need, but aim to make it as accessible to as many people as possible...
You can link *any* folder on your computer to SkyDrive as follows (in Windows Vista and above):
1. Open a Command Prompt (Click the Windows start button or the Windows key, then type "cmd" and launch cmd.exe), or just find it in your Start menu within the Accessories folder. Note that depending on your computer's security policy, you might need to run the Command Prompt as Administrator, in which case you just need to right-click on the icon and choose "Run as administrator".
2. Type the following line into the Command Prompt and press the enter key, replacing "YourFolder" with the name of the folder you want to link...
MKLINK /J "%UserProfile%\SkyDrive\YourFolder" "C:\SomeFolderPath\YourFolder"
This will create a Directory Junction [an alias for the actual folder] within your SkyDrive folder to any folder elsewhere on your computer. For example, if you want to link your Public Pictures folder to SkyDrive, type this...
MKLINK /J "%UserProfile%\SkyDrive\Public Pictures" "C:\Users\Public\Pictures"
4. Skydrive will instantly start synchronizing your "C:\Users\Public\Pictures" folder to a new "folder" [aka Directory Junction] within your SkyDrive called "Public Pictures" (or whatever you decide to call the Directory Junction -- it doesn't need to have the same name as the folder its aliasing).
5. You can later delete the "folder" [Directory Junction] from your SkyDrive and it's no different than deleting a shortcut to a folder, i.e. the original folder will *not* be deleted, but because the Directory Junction is removed from your SkyDrive folder, the "folder" and its content will be removed from your SkyDrive.
More information on the MKLINK command can be found on this Microsoft TechnNet page: technet.microsoft.com/.../cc753194(WS.10).aspx
Note: This solution has been posted by many people in many places, and most of them use "MKLINK /D", but many people have reported problems with this. I have not encountered any of these problems when using "MKLINK /J". Also note that I have not heard that Microsoft supports this feature at all, but again, I have not encountered any problems with this when done as I've described.
I can see my computers on the left side of SkyDrive web page under the Computer link (where I can fetch files).
Does someone know how is it possible to remove the old computers from there? If I resinstall my computer, the old one is still there and the new one is created with adding a "-1" tag. I cannot find the way how can I remove the old one.
We would be very happy if there is an ability to sync only the selected folders
From the biggest competitor for SkyDrive, Dropbox, you have under Preferences > Advanced something called Selectiv Sync, "Select which folders sync to this computer". (Not which folders sync FROM this computer)
@team SkyDrive, when you implement Selective Sync, can you also implement the "advanced view" available in Dropbox, for selecting sub-folders.
Selective sync is good for:
- if one (or more) of your computers are using a small SSD
- if you create photo album only for sharing online.
- if you have work documents on your SkyDrive, and only want the SkyDrive app on your work-PC to sync these and not the xxGB of photos and other personal documents.
I'm on W8 RP and like others have reported SkyDrive did not auto update. I just re-downloaded from the link at the top of the page and hence am now updated. However like others have also said, my SkyDrive icon in the systray is completely white. In settings references are made re un-linking SD which is now greyed out...it wasn't before. All well otherwise.
For what it's worth, I prefer the old logo, but the new white notify icon is nice.
If I might be picky:
For consistency with other 'notification area windows' (volume control, network, date/time, action centre), the status window should have an offset of 8 pixels (at 96 DPI) from the screen/taskbar edge in Windows 7/8 when the DWM is enabled. Currently it seems to be 1 pixel, which mimics the appearance of notification area windows in Windows Vista.
The lower blue section of the window is about 50% taller than it is in similar windows, and the hyperlink appearance is different. Also, the grey dividing bar doesn't look very nice compared to the blue gradient found in the system notification area windows. Finally, Segoe UI Light might be in vogue at Microsoft right now, but I think it looks a bit out of place in the status window - can't you stick with Segoe UI (Regular) for consistency?
Version 16.4.6003.0710 is tagged with a Beta tag ?
Ok, so from you selective-sync people, you mean you want to have say 5 folders in your SkyDrive (Documents, Pictures, Video, Music, Projects, etc.) but on your "home" machine you don't want your "Projects" folder synchronized while at work you don't want "Music" or "Video". So you are asking to be able to toggle which folders are synchronized on one machine, and what is toggled on the other so not everything is syncrhonized between multiple machines?
I only synchronize with one machine and I have Libraries and programs all pointing to the SkyDrive files so everything is backed up which may be why I couldn't understand this. I also only have a 60 GB hard drive too, so my 10 GB of pictures and 1-2 GB of everything else fills up much of my hard drive while I still have 14GB of space left!
Thank you hohansen for your description with Dropbox, that clicked in my head.
Thanks for the update. Keep improving SkyDrive. I would like to suggest:
1 - Selective sync - Ability to select which folders to sync to a particular computer (i don’t need all folders on all devices)
2 - Ability to recover deleted files (preferably for 30 days otherwise 7 days) both for files deleted on skydrive.com and in your local SkyDrive Folder on a device, either by a recovery option or by moving files to a trash folder on skydrive.com first. I know that when you accidentally delete files on skydrive.com, the SkyDrive app deletes these files on your computer (if they exist) as well, but at least puts them in your local trash. In that case, you can recover a file. Files only on skydrive.com can’t be recovered. It would be much safer when you could recover files on skydrive.com as well.
3 - Sync files shared with me - Let SkyDrive app sync files that are shared with me
4 - It would be really convenient if desktop notifications would be added to SkyDrive app, so especially when shared files are synced, the app alerts you that someone has updated or added files.
5 - P2P sync (Sync-over-LAN)
1. No design
2. Ugly CI
3. Ugly Logo
4. It is not Metro, it's no design
5. Why Skydrive = two cloud?
6. Is Skydrive a weather services?
7. Who is the designer?
The Skydrive LOGO(with word)
Heavy for left, Light for right.
It's not balance, no good, ugly.
Metro is a design language, not just a flat LOGO.
Say that you have put files in the SkyDrive folder on your computer and they - these uncorrupted files - have been synced to Microsoft SkyDrive online. If these files in your SkyDrive folder (on your computer's hard drive) become corrupted in the future, will the "new" and corrupted files be synced to the online Microsoft SkyDrive, thus replacing the user's online backup with corrupted files? Considering that hard disks do fail, I'm disturbed that I couldn't find any information from Microsoft about this. Comments?
Just wanted to say that the new version seems much more responsive to changes in the folder and is definitely a step in the right direction. For me there are four things that are needed for this to overtake Dropbox (you've already made a huge leap in terms of price...I've got 45Gb for $9.99 a year! Dropbox were charging that per month!).
1. Selective Sync
2. Syncing of shared folders
3. Recycle bin in the cloud for those "I've deleted the wrong file" moments!
4. Delta syncing so it only uploads the changes to a file, e.g. if you add info to an MP3 it currently uploads the whole file again whereas Dropbox just uploads the changed blocks...
Even without these Skydrive is a fantasic backup tool and the online document editing is a real killer function!
I have resolved the issue of selective sync by having 2 live id's. One ID is where I sync my active data between PC and skydrive. Second Skydrive which I use as a kind of archive which need not be on my PC hard drive. It works nicely for me.
BTW, I just love the Skydrive. It is magic the way my hard disk data sync with Cloud and back with my Mobile. Dear Skydrive Team. You are doing just great!
I really don't see a point of using a cloud that forces me to keep all my files locally...
Nice logo. It's a pity that whoever designed it wasn't behind the design for the new Windows logo. They'd have done a much better job with it.
Thanks for the heads up. Kindly consider this request in the future update: answers.microsoft.com/.../9c22caca-75b1-4c01-bb00-9cb6947b7315
@Omar (MSFT), guess its time to change the logo and favicon on http://SkyDrive.com too..
"Windows XP client please, no reason not to if Android and iOS are supported."
Me too. I am now only using W8, but something important is at stake.
Where are the features from LiveMesh we've all come to love such as Favorites synching between computers? We would also like to choose what folders we want to access from other computers, not everything. A use case scenario is syncing data from my personal computer to SkyDrive and only want access to some on my work PC so I can do some thing but not all since we all know that employers don't afford employees privacy and I want to limit my data synced to my work PC.
#Feature request# Share option in excel. would be great if we can sync specific page to different User. im working with multiple office & group of people. by viewing their daily update report (each on different excel file) is not an easy job to keep up with. If skydrive excel have this feature for sync specific page to different user. I only need 1 excel file instead of 10+ files now....
i use Win8 RP with my official LiveID but i use skydrive with another personal LiveID. with v14 everything works without problem but with v16.4 doesn't!!!!!
choose try againt to sign in to skydrive with Microsoft account you're using on this pc?????? are you crazy? if i've 2 different liveID i want use two different live id. if you want deny it, you can take skydrive and delete from the memory of people because with dropbox i can do it without problem.
another demostration that Microsoft doesn't think all the scenarios....without words!!!!!
This is all good stuff, but what happened to the loyalty upgrade offer? I had files in both skydrive and live.
@HomerJ, OH REALLY? That or YOU are "another demonstration" of stew-pid user? Anyway.. to change the account you use with SkyDrive
1. Click the SkyDrive icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then click Settings.
2. On the About tab, click Unlink SkyDrive.
3. Restart SkyDrive and sign in with the account you want to use. You'll need to select the location for your SkyDrive folder again. If you select the same location, the folders for both accounts will be merged. If the PC had the Fetch files feature turned on, you'll need to turn it on again.
And by the way its the same method we had in v14 :-s
... which makes you ignorant liar and you lose. try again!
If you wanna sync any folder to SkyDrive then try this ShellExtension janhannemann.wordpress.com/.../sync-any-folder-to-skydrive
Mike -- Thanks for the updates. Unfortunately, my hard drive crashed over the weekend. I've reinstalled WIndows 8 Release Preview and SkyDrive, but SkyDrive is crashing after starting. I use SKyDrive as my primary store for Documents/Music/Pictures/etc. and would really like to get this working again.
When SkyDrive crashes, the following 2 events are logged to the Application Event Log. I can provide log files via email if necessary.

@AdrenalineWerks, I guess folks on http://answers.microsoft.com may able to help you with this error.
I think you are doing a fine job.
It is true that there is a risk that file damage might be replicated, but this simply means that it is inappropriate to make the SkyDrive copy the master copy of anything. If people use it like a portable hard disk that doesn't need to be carried, they won't have any trouble. If they want managed browsable changesets in the cloud then they should consider SourceForge, which provides exactly that service.
Personally I run a Subversion server at home for this purpose. It's in the cloud to the extent that it's accessible from any point on the net courtesy of dynamic DNS.
It would be a good idea to provide UI to enable/disable/trigger synch at a given location.
If you do decide to implement location specific selective replication then I suggest a shell extension similar to TortoiseSVN.
As to the problem of profiles filling up the C drive, this is important but actually has nothing to do with SkyDrive and everything to do with a fundamental Windows problem. Windows needs a facility for migrating not only Users but also Program Files to another volume. And third party software shouldn't put anything under the Windows folder; we need something along the lines of unix's /lib - and of course we need to be able to move it to another volume.
I have tried using junction points to achieve this, with mixed success.
It is a good utility but I found a problem with it .... it uses much of unwanted bandwidth even it is in sleep mode.. for solving this you need to exit this program from system tray !!
How did Microsoft communicate reducing SkyDrive storage from 25gb to 7gb?
@polodad47 - Microsoft have not "reduced SkyDrive storage from 25GB to 7GB". As they announced, back in April, existing SkyDrive users could ask for 25GB free storage, while new users would start with 7GB free storage.
Both classes of users can add to their storage by annual subscription plans.
It's all detailed on the "Building Windows 8" blog:
Why on Earth do you want me to pile photos and documents in the SkyDrive folders?? Going back to stone age of piling everything in one folder? SkyDrive folder must be a LIBRARY, not folder.
Hello and greetings from Portugal!
I'm sorry because this may not be the best place to ask this but I've tried to find some other way to contact the Windows Live team but...well..here it goes.
I'm on a personal journey to be the most "absent" from the hardware as I can, so...I'm "clouding myself" !:)
Theres a the moment very few things that stiil depend my notebook and the reason is the RSS feeds.
I'm using Windows Live Mail to read them but they are on my notebook and I would to have something like Google Reader where all feeds are online.
I think this is possible if using Windows 8 but...it's there any chance to have this features on Windows 7?
Thanks in advance and again...sorry to use this thread!
