This week on Windows Phone Radio, Mike and I welcome Paul Bryan from the Windows Phone team to recap TechEd 2011 and gets us grounded in all things business. We also cover two new handsets, the HTC Trophy on Verizon and the HTC HD7s on AT&T, and new deals like $40 off Microsoft Office and a free Xbox console game when you buy an HTC Trophy on Verizon. Finally, more information on the Must Have Games program for Windows Phone including release dates and timing. You can find the podcast in the Zune Marketplace, iTunes or streaming direct here.
It's certainly crazy that there's simply no Podcast directory. At first I thought it was a launch hiccup with directory to follow, but 8 months out and still no sign. I can't understand why they don't just use the US listings. OK, maybe the UK staff (if they even exist) don't want to curate a region specific portal but that's no reason to simply remove the directory/search function. I'm OK adding feeds via RSS, but I dread to think what the average users reaction moving from iTunes is when they discover their new phone/software doesn't appear to have ANY podcasts on it.
I try. The Zune client is RSS driven anyway, so it's impossible to have a podcast without a real feed. I just figured out what's what with clicking.
Meanwhile, international roll out of the Zune software is certainly lacking. I understand the liscening problems of paid content (i.e. music/movies/ect.) but surely for unpaid, freely available stuff (i.e. podcasts) that you could go get yourself (i.e. RSS) they could have done a better job.
@tsrblke You sir are a star. I tried the three at the top that were labeled RSS, didn't think to try the "see all" that isn't labeled RSS! How about changing that site admin? Thanks again tsrblke. @garymoncrieff
Guys we love this phone all of my office has them. Is there a way to enlarge Font size in the text area of the phone my Mom has issue's with here eyes this might be helpful or with this be in the next update. Keep up all the great work congrats to matt and the new baby girl i have a 7 month old girl what a great family starter
Proper feed: wpradio.podcast.windowsphone7.com/rss
(It's under "View All" on the side bar does it not work)
PLEASE READ - After a dead end conversation with WinPhoSupport they can't tell me why there's no Podcast listing in UK. I emplore you to add an RSS feed for the MP3s so those outside the US can subscribe. Not download, not streaming, a proper feed. It's ridiculous that neither the phone nor Zune podcasts are actually available or even useable on Zune outside of US. Is there literally nobody on the Zune/Phone team outside of US/CN? Thanks. (ps, sorry about the please read)
@AriesDog, other than approving the finished app, I don't think Microsoft has much to do with that process. I think you should ping the developers of that app to get them to port it to WP7. Comixology isn't a feature, it's an app. Just sayin'. Also, if I understand it correctly, the rumor is that Zune will be essentially broken up, and your XBox stuff will be handled separately from music and other apps, so it might not be practical to make your MS Point cross-functional. But I could be misunderstanding what the plan is. I don't use the points at all (though I do have Zune Pass), so I don't have much in the way of frame of reference.
If Windows Phone wants to be used by small business then it ought to make the Square credit card reader system compatible.
I would so be into buying games on my Windows Phone if the Marketplace accepted Microsoft points.
Unrelated, but I'll always end my posts asking the Windows Phone team to do whatever it can to get the Comixology app on the WP7 platform. It's the one app I truly miss from iPhone and Android.

Is there a Windows update for this model?
I'm sure the buzz will pick up dramatically after Tuesday, and it will be interesting to hear the parsing. Ballmer (whose seen Microsoft stock value drop approx. 56% during his tenure) has had a history of misspeaking various "announcements", and he commented in Japan that 500 new features are coming with Mango. It will be an education, I think, to see what he defines as a "feature" and if all 500 or so will be given a degree of detail this week. There are more rumors of what some of those 500 features will be and they definitely sound exciting. Some of which, of course, are things many felt should have been in place from the beginning, but some of those look to be excellent use of the hub concept---which is exactly where I think 75% of the effort should be. Hubs are a bit difficult for a lot of folks (Android and iPhone users in particular) to really grasp and see the potential of, but I think they are the hope of the platform along with it's gorgeous UI (as long as Microsoft doesn't give in to those people who seem to want it to start looking like Android).
But, the rub is that Mango's success will be dramatically hurt if the whole update process isn't fixed. There are still way too many devices out there that haven't caught up to the updates---I'd argue that the platform is as fractured as Android right now. While I'm in no particular hurry to get the certificate security update, I still haven't seen it---delayed, I believe, because NO Focus updates are flying until the version 1.4 fix is completed (although I have a 1.3 device). There's a rumor that nine additional devices are going to be released once Mango is out. I certainly hope that the oversight of the OEMs is much, MUCH tighter with these devices. I'm convinced that it was because OEMs got away with making changes after Microsoft okay'd their original devices that we're in the mess we're in with first-gen devices. Well, that and the fact that carriers are allowed to hold up the updates just to add their software.
As for the VIP event (I can't help but frown at the choice to call it a "launch" since nothing is actually launching), I think that's an excellent idea for folks to post any video they take of the event (with their WP7 devices, naturally).
As I commented last time, there are no Podcasts in the UK Marketplace. I've tried adding "traffic.libsyn.com/.../" manually but it gives an error. Could you please tell me how to subscribe to the WP7 podcast using the WP7software?
Apparently if you believe everythinhg you read, this week was not THE RAPTURE just the announcement of the death of the Zune brand.
"Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zune: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come." Psalm 102:13: ;) lolz
(only 2 letters changed in this quotation!)
Brian/Michael (and Matt),
Looking forward to the Mango Marketing/VIP launch event on the 24th. Please share any live video links that may become available here with the WP7Blog so we don't miss a moment :) I think the timing for East Coast Australia works to around 7:30am the 25th...
Here's my little attempt at a WP7 Mango picture idea:

(the idea was good - but geez the gfx skills are ordinary lol)
I noticed you guys stopped talking about updates. I'm curious about that actually. On my Surround I'm still waiting on the security update from may. Are we going to be kept up to day about that as well?
I'm also intrigued to hear what you have lined up for next week. I can't wait. Although all this talk about Mango does cause me to want it to be sped up a bit ;).
cant subscribe to the podcast through Zune in the UK can this be changed?
I was wondering if OneNote on WP7 will ever support viewing Equations and Ink, even if these were converted to images by either SharePoint or Skydrive
