Live from Nokia World 2011: Demo of the Xbox Companion App

A few weeks back I told you about the Xbox Companion App for Windows Phone, a handy (and free!) utility that let you find, learn more about and control content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace on your Xbox 360 straight from your Windows Phone.  Today on the floor at Nokia World the Xbox team was showing it off, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to shoot a demo so you can see how it actually works.

Pretty great stuff, right?  I love how apps like this – and the Kinectimals for Windows Phone game I showed yesterday – are helping to make entertainment accessible (and personal) everywhere.

I’ll be at Nokia World all of today and tomorrow, blogging about the great stuff I find on the show floor, interviewing interesting people from both Nokia and Microsoft, and sharing as much as I can find about what the future holds for Nokia and Windows Phone. Keep an eye on the blog for new posts and follow me on Twitter for more sharable stuff from Nokia World!

And remember that you can keep up on all the latest stuff from Windows Phone through the Windows Phone Facebook Page and @WindowsPhone Twitter handle.

Insert the "Application" CD into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM of the MacBook. The CD is in the yellow CD envelope inside the software packaging. A pop-up box will appear once the CD has been read.

  • The only thing that I have not been sold on as of yet that is microsoft is the XBOX but I believe that is something that is going to change very soon if more features like this emerge

This is great stuff.  The search should be like the WP7 marketplace search where it shows suggestions.  It would also be cool to use all the voice commands you can use with Kinect thought the app and use the integrated controls so you wouldn't have to open the app just to pause it.

Market this now!  TV ads!  We can only do so much by word!

  • That is very nice. Can't wait to have this on my console and phone.

  • Yeah, I was thinking about switching from PS3 to Xbox and now I'm about convinced. I just hope the Xbox gets better looking because I have a complete Sony entertainment system and it has a very clean look to it. Don't want to ruin my aesthetic.

  • With the integration of a WP7 application being available as a controller for the 360 in the Fall Update, the assumption would be that Microsoft FINALLY has developed an IP-based interface for control of the console (as opposed to the current IR or RF-only approach).  It would be VERY useful for integrators or developers to be able to leverage it for embracing the Xbox 360 and its media services as part of a larger home control system.

Anyone else notice next to the Zune tile it says "Vudu Movies" on the companion app? They never announced the Vudu service was coming to Xbox 360.

  • I hope that the members of the public xbox fall dashboard beta program will get this app to test! Looks awesome!

  • Pretty awesome Ben!  Since it's going to require your Xbox running the Fall 2011 Update, I hope it's released the same day as the Xbox update is.  Will pretty awesome to show during the holidays to folks!

  • @jamiet:  That's because the video player is a Silverlight player, not HTML5 code.

  • This is going to be huge...

I think its time for Microsoft to start making PC-MAC Ads (like Apple used to do) and compare the difference between Windows Phone and IPhone.

Microsoft is rocking the smartphone industry now..

Video doesn't show up in IE on my Windows Phone. How ironic!
