S-W-E-E-T! Here’s something everybody in my house has been waiting for: The Xbox LIVE version of Wordament. The wildly popular Windows Phone word game was reborn today in Marketplace with a new look and extra features. Download it now

For many people, one big draw of this new Wordament—still free, by the way—is the addition of Xbox achievements. But the game also features other nice upgrades:

  • new interface languages including French, Italian, Dutch, and Swedish (game boards remain in English)
  • a  Contains option showing every word a tile can make
  • a Guest Mode so someone else can play without wrecking your hard-earned ranking and stats
  • sound effects (the old version was silent)

Wordament is near the top of my must-have apps list. So if you’re new to Windows Phone, I highly recommend giving it a try. Once you get hooked like the rest of us, check out my recent Q&A with the game’s creators—and these pro playing tips for boosting your score.

I am really frustrated. I still cannot connect to Wordament and am missing the game very much. I reinstalled the app from Marketplace - no change. Has anybody similar problems and hopefully a solution?

  • Loved the first version and am loving the upgraded version with better graphics, sound, and now achievements. Also glad it stayed free. Keep up the nice work. Wishing I could get some of those achievements that only the top tier players are going to get.

also love Wordament - attempting to try out the Win8 metro app version - but the "Account unlock code" that the Win8 version asks me to find on my phone version on the Me tab of the leader boards, doesn't seem to exist. this isn't one of those "living in Canada" things is it? (ie not available in this region)?

  • @Rodney - great point... There are a couple billboards I drive past every day that have had SOME sort of Motorola Droid on them for the past two years or more.  As soon as one gets old enough to not grab my attention, it updates to a new, fresh one.

There are a couple of screen boards too, but for some reason they're being resisted by the local government.  Like they're dangerous when they already have billboards around?  I don't get it.  I bet if they were showing WP Ads the resistance would crumble... ;)

Hey, if you had HDMI out, you could plug in at the base of one of those billboards and show your own ad, right?? :)

Since the update, I cannot connect to the server. Neither via UMTS nor via WLAN. Please check

  • Just some words of encouragement for the team.....

  • So, it seems like while we had a slight marketing boost, marketing is still lackluster... IMO, they should skip the WP challenges, the concerts, and other promotions for a while, and focus on TV. We have some terrific ads now, with Nokia, but they need to be showing EVERY commercial break. If only one commercial is going to air a night, late during the last show why bother? These wasted dollars spent on pointless marketing could go towards R&D so that us relatively few WP owners can have a even better experience,, like HDMI out... Lol

That's why I gave up on marketing.the only time you see a WP on TV is when Rogers or Telus are advertising their phone selection so all you see is an image of a bunch of phones.

I wish you guys spent a day in Canada, then i'm sure you'll even be surprised I know about WP.

  • Yeah, I'm thinking that was all just rumours...  At Costco the other day, the AT&T section of their cell phone kiosk didn't have a SINGLE WP device...  Sad, sad, sad...

  • And Marketing! I've only seen 1 WP commercial all week, and that was by ATT. Where's this big rolling thunder campaign? More like skipping whisper.. Lol! Those beta test ads are perfect, but they show them less than the old drop the phone in the toilet, don't use your phone commercials. Trust me, I live in Dallas, and I've been sitting here wasting my time looking at vampire dairies, and 30 rock, just to see NOTHING! Can you believe nothing on NBC, during primetime in Dallas??.. Wait... As my keyboard just dropped a beta test commercial just came on... This is in real time over here people, never rehearsed!.... Ok, that's one for Nokia the whole night, with like 6 ATT Android commercials advertising the new HTC One X.. What about the HTC T2? Come on guys!!!! :'(

  • Asking for shirts is so last week! For now on I'm asking for HDMI out..... Every chance I get. I hope it doesn't annoying.

  • Back on topic - finally had time to try out the new version of this last night, and I like it!  I think I just got lucky with my timing, but it seemed like there were more easily findable words, and I scored a few achievements right off the bat...

    Great job, Team Wordament!

Lol.XP?man I thought its only the government that still used XP man.its true I had a hard time leaving XP especially after o threw away my Vista laptop.I had lost faith in anything other than XP but after spinning around with Windows 7,I couldn't go back to XP.i don't think there's any setting for that maybe its just XP or your browser,it worked on IE 9/10 haven't tried on any other browser yet.

  • @ Kenny..

I'm on XP. Does that have anything to do with it? Or is it a setting?? Regarding SkyDrive...

Also, the reason they dont attack BB is because at this point they dont feel a potential threat coming from that direction. Just makes me laugh when they jump on any tiny issue WP has. It's Flattering!

  • Sweet indeed. Now, this is one game I wouldnt mind shelling money out. Its so addictive and well put together.. this is one game that is un-put-downable. Cheers for making this a Xbox-live one.

  • Oh, also @T Windows - as to the size of our domain, we've got approximately 20,000 workstations in our region... and then 3 more regions of about the same size.  So it's not exactly known for being flexible or catering to individual needs! :)

  • @Leigh & @T Windows - I appreciate the comments, and believe me... NOTHING I ever get in MY email would concern ANYONE if it got leaked out!!

But I work for a large health care organization that has unfortunately been burned before by careless employees leaving their company laptops behind, and there have been a couple of large lawsuits.  Therefore, EVERY mobile device is required to be encrypted, whether it's us in the I.T. department, or the neurosurgeons who bring in our biggest revenue stream.

I have pleaded my case with the Exchange administrators, that there would be no harm in setting up a security group for "non sensitive" users that don't need encryption - after all, as long as the PIN and Remote Wipe are enabled, what more do they REALLY need?  But in an environment that is always under scrutiny by lawyers and government agencies, my cries have fallen on deaf ears.

So while I PERSONALLY agree with you, that all this encryption puts a large amount of cash in Symantec's bank accounts...  In fact there's an initiative brewing that will have us encrypting all the desktops in the environment as well as all the laptops.  To me, it's ridiculous.  To the people who would have to defend it in court, it's a "safe harbour" decision.

Oh, and we use SCCM for everything! :)  I'm on the team that builds packages and manages the whole SCCM environment.

Thanks for the update on Wordament my wife is loving it on her 900, I tried it but don’t get the same excitement as she does so I’m sticking to my action list of apps and especially the addicting zombie games.

The Wordament app is designed well for the WP platform, and packed full of cool features, thanks again.

Not sure what size your system platform is at your company, but you might be able to benefit from these two solutions for enabling smart phone rules within the enterprise servers or network.

We currently use Windows Intune to deal with a lot of the requirements from various form factors here at our office,

But for the most part a hand full of my tech associates are successfully using MSCCM with enterprise requirements for their companies to get around or either fix this issue with mobile devices.

    Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager:

    www.microsoft.com/.../configuration-manager-2012.aspx

    Windows Intune:

    www.microsoft.com/.../pc-management.aspx

Hope this helps with the current user and possible future WP users at your office.

@djmikebrady   If you work for something other than a company with real IP that if it got out would kill the company, IT should be challenged for using encryption.  If a phone is encrypted and someone wants to get the information badly enough, they will.  Therefore, if the information is secret enough to encrypt, it isn't worth doing so.  Microsoft has over 50000 phones, all running WP7, and they do fine.  Is your company in need of more security than Microsoft?  I'm of the opinion that all this "security" overzealous security has done two things:

    1)  added a lot of cash to the pockets of the security companies.

    2) Decreased the efficiency of a lot of companies

Is some information worth protecting?  Yes.    But that doesn't mean your meeting minutes for the underwater basket weaving competition need to be encrypted.

For most companies, pin passwords and wipe on password incorrect after N times is perfectly fine.   Remote wipe works great as well..

the reason they don't talk and complain about BB updates is that BB is been this way since its creation in 2000 or 2001 You buy what you get without any promises.RIM has never promised updatability from my knowledge and has never bragged about update process or criticized other OSs update processes. On the other Hand you can't say the same about Microsoft.

And whether you admit it or not, though WP is way faster than BB,WP is the least featurewise compared to even webOS.

also i'll like to clarify that all current SkyDrive users can keep their free 25GB of storage all they need to do is activate it,but it gets lockdown soon.when you sign in Windows live and click on SkyDrive the activation message is at the top.you guys better Activate that before MS butcher's it silently as Zune app purchase.

BTW MS should send a mass email to all current SkyDrive users, because not everyone goes on SkyDrive through the browser frequently

with regards to the SkyDrive feature you requested on the Previous post is already implemented, both in the browser(windows live) and the SkyDrive app in W8 Consumer preview. As soon as a file is uploaded it immediately appears.its been so for months now or more than a year.IDK What's wrong with your SkyDrive lol,but mine does that since I started using it.

  • @ KTGiang..

That's "Behind The Tiles" not behind the times. Hahah.. Seriously dude, the last thing WP needs is to be associated with anything from the past. Lol, now, Android/ iPhone should have one of those old school events you went to. Lol...

Anyways, seriously, you're right! Free Zune for a year, or instant 25gb of SkyDrive could be attractive. And, let people know about it for Christ sake! I agree with you....

Off topic. But I really think that windows phone users should get 25gb free for their SkyDrive regardless of when they made their account. It would be a good selling point and neat feature to point out either way. I've already got mine but I went to the "behind the times" event and thought it'd be a great selling point there.

  • @Rodney - I know, the first impression thing is HUGE!!  I've explained to him that WP8 is *RUMORED* to have enterprise features, and more importantly, that if your exchange server doesn't require encryption, WP7.5 has outstanding integration.  Now the question is if he'll take that to heart, or just go blabbing that WP sucks for business email... which is wrong for most cases, but is the kind of publicity that seems to be flying everywhere.

  • @ DJ Mike...

Well, hopefully he likes the other features the 900 has to offer. If not this is going to be a double shot in the foot to MS, because not only will he return his phone, but he will probably end up explaining why he returned it to others, and they will not buy a WP device.. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and unfortunately product impressions last a long long time...

It would be funny if he came back with a BB! LOL... Keep us posted on that...

Speaking of BB, why is it that the media is all over MS about not updating existing devices when every BB device most likely wont see a update to BB10? They are still selling the BB bold 900, and that damn thing isn't going to get updated! LOL....

djmike - business features are coming with Windows Phone 8

  • *FRUSTRATED SCREAMS OF AGONY* - I REALLY hate to rain on the Wordament Love Parade, but a co-worker who didn't have a smartphone just bought a Lumia 900, and was loving it until he found out that he couldn't connect to our Exchange server because it requires device encryption.

It is so ridiculous that this is an issue 18 months after WP7 launched...  The Good app is nice, but our exchange team doesn't support it.  We need either an app like Touchdown for Android that complies to ALL EAS profiles, or just build them into the OS, since this is supposedly the OS that doesn't require apps for every little thing.

It would be really great if someone from MS would respond to these concerns, because the head-in-the-sand approach is not helping.  Pretty sure there's going to be a returned Lumia 900 in the next day or so, as my co-worker said the only reason he bought a smart phone was to connect to his work email.

I'm with Allibone on this one, Nokia Blue + Bright orange makes it a pain to play on the clearblack amoled screen. The black background was much nicer to play on.

  • @smcb make sure xbox live is checked in your settings -> applications -> Games.

  • I really don't like the new backgrounds and they have seriously affected my playing time. My phone theme is Nokia Blue which gives me a garish orange background in Wordament since its update. Much preferred the old default background. TBH I can't see myself playing again until I get the option to chose my own background which is a shame as I love Wordament. :(

  • @Rodney - No, our version of Words with Friends is Words by Post!  It's cross-platform (WP, iOS, Android) and I play regularly with friends on all three of them!

Wordament is similar (almost identical) to Word Arena, which is available on WP and iOS.  They may have added an Android version now - it's been a while since I looked at it...

  • This is our version of words with friends right?// I'm not to savvy on the games, but I need to know so I can educate potential newcomer...

I love Wordament, but I'm having performance issues on the main page of this new version. I suspect that the 3D Avatar is causing this (do we really need an avatar here??). That, and the new background is hideous, I really miss the clean look of the original.

Otherwise, still the same great game. Thanks for the tip Michael.

  • Simply the best "FREE" game on the Marketplace, i love it :)

  • @smcb: I'm not having any problems myself. But I'll look into it.

Great news! I was actually hesitant to download the original Wordament due to the lack of XBOX functionality.
