Gridlock? Who cares! Audible is here

Gridlock? Who cares! Audible is here

A confession: I’m an audio book junkie.

Or at least I used to be before moving away from Southern California and its gridlocked freeways.  Nothing eased the pain of commuting better than Audible. Books like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, The Dharma Bums, Five Dysfunctions of a Team, and Silos, Politics & Turf Wars both entertained and educated me during my daily two-hour commute between Long Beach and Irvine.

I’ve been meaning to get back in the habit when traveling for work, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the official Audible app for Windows Phone, which you can download now from Marketplace.

Back in the day, I had to shop online, connect to a PC, and download audio books to my MP3 player. With the new Windows Phone app, I can download books directly to my phone from Audible’s mobile store (something you won’t find on some other smartphones). I can also pin favorite titles to my Start screen as Live Tiles for one-touch listening (no need to look down, fumble with the player, and risk rear-ending the guy in front of me).

The Audible app is free, but the price tag for books depends on the title. Which books will you be commuting to?

Darren Watson: Apologies, as I only just read your comment. I got the app through the QR code on WP Central, which is below. Up until Tuesday I kept getting the 'not available for your device' message via the same route.

Sorry about the wait - I asked and it looks like the version for the UK and a few other regions is making its way through the process, there's a possibility it may be up tomorrow by mid-day.

Sorry guys, this still isn't available in the UK marketplace. Is it possible to get an update on when it will filter through? Thanks.

I found a great metro UI design on http://www.pepsi.com/

But then it hurts me when I see this kind of macabre spectacle: i46.tinypic.com/352q34o.png

    ..not for Windows Phone !!

Hi Andy, can you convince the Yahoo! devs to deliver the official IM for Windows Phone? Otherwise, please implement Yahoo! IM support in 7.8's messaging hub.

  • I unfortunaly do not have this capability, but anyone who must commute 2hours a day like me would just die to have this! Great new product!

There is a little glitch on the Marketplace website. On change region page: www.microsoft.com/.../market.aspx, some regions are not available in the native language and English is written in round brackets, such as; Romania (English), Saudi Arabia (English), Thailand (English)... but when you select anyone of those regions, it shows Romanian (Romania), Arabic (Saudi Arabia), Thai (Thiland) and the URL has ro-ro, ar-sa, th-th... while the page content is in English.

    Please fix this issue.

Not the end of the world I know but still not available in UK. I do feel that you need to be clear about delays like these. I don't really mind as I know it's coming - sometime over the weekend?

    @Rodney E. Jones

AT&T is giving away $50 in accessories with the Lumia 900.  That does much what you asked for that phone at least.

  • Counting on the fact that anybody informed about WP8 won't be buying a T2 or a L900 I think it would be smart to lower the price of these two phones to $49.99. WP7.8 is still a good, and very useful, OS,, especially for a first time SP user. But, something needs to be done to keep the users coming... And advertise it!

This is not a US-only app. There was a bug that happened only in the UK and 4 other countries (I don't have the list handy at the moment but wanted to respond to this without waiting), it was resubmitted last night with a fix for it, so it should show up soon.

  • We need "Feature Friday" where you guys unveil a upcoming WP8 feature every Friday...

  • Please tell me this isn't US only? Come on Microsoft when are you going to learn that you are playing in a global market? This rates up there with no podcast marketplace support outside the US. :(

Can we have an indication of when this will be available outside the US please? UK here, and it's not available yet.

  • ohhh I was a bit keen there as its not available in the UK :(  Guess the waiting continues...

  • Superb news and might i add, its about time :)

  • Confirm that Audible app not currently showing as available in UK marketplace - www.windowsphone.com/.../bdc813dd-c20b-41f8-8646-de72fa0b365d

And unfortunately while that phone based direct download link did get me to the app install/review/screenshots screen on my Samsung Omnia 7 in the UK it didn't allow me to actually install as it came up with the 'not available for your device' info message rather than Install and Share buttons :(

Hoping this is just a matter of being patient as the app filters through Marketplace distribution and not a US only app that they've never mentioned would be US only - so disappointing international users again.

As a general point to Windows Phone team IF things are going to be US specific please, please, please mention this as early as possible! And please try your hardest to encourage app developers to really think if there are any good reasons for things not being released globally...

  • There's a direct link into the Windows Phone Marketplace: aceontech.com/.../direct-link-to-audible-windows-phone-app-for-non-us-users. I'm in Belgium and it's not showing up in the Marketplace either, but the direct link allows you to download it anyway. Good luck - it worked for me :-).

Great app indeed. The experience is flexible, fast and fluid.

The marketplace search in WP is not listing the app!

Too bad they haven't updated it on their website yet: http://www.audible.com/sw

Agreed on the 2x (or user configurable) playback multiplier.  App also seems a little sluggish, and doesn't work nearly as smoothly over BT as say Spotify.

  • Not on the Belgium Marketplace either.. Is it coming? Been waiting for 2 years!

The app is not showing up in the UK marketplace yet. Any reason why?

  • It NEEDS double-speed playback!!!!!

  • I've been an Audible member for a couple of years now and have been eagerly awaiting a Windows Phone app.  Now my phone can totally replace my iPod Nano!

  • I will be downloading this app for sure....since m an audio book freak...
