AT&T just made it official: The Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 with Windows Phone 8 go on sale Friday for $99.99 and $49.99. But you can preorder both phones from the AT&T website starting tomorrow.
The Windows Phone 8X by HTC will be available “before Thanksgiving,” AT&T said. The company will offer a 16 GB model for $199.99 and an 8 GB version for $99.99.
The Nokia Lumia 920 sports an 8.7-megapixel PureView camera with optical image stabilization technology and a Carl Zeiss lens. It’s designed to capture blur-free pictures and videos even in low-light. It also has a big 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display housed in scratch-proof Gorilla Glass. The phone comes in red, white, black, cyan, and yellow. As a bonus, AT&T is also tossing in a free wireless charging plate (while supplies last).
The Lumia 820 features a 4.3-inch ClearBlack display, 8MP camera, and exchangeable color shells (sold separately). Like its bigger sibling, the Lumia 820 comes with exclusive apps including Nokia Drive (turn-by-turn voice navigation), Nokia Music (free streaming music service), and Nokia City Lens (an augmented reality city guide). The phone comes in black.
The Windows Phone 8X by HTC has a 4.3-inch 720p HD display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 2.1-megapixel, wide-angle 88 degree front-facing camera. It’s also the first Windows Phone 8 phone with Beats Audio technology for studio-quality sound. The 16GB model at AT&T comes in California Blue, while the 8GB model is available in Limelight (yellow)—an AT&T exclusive.
Simply amazing. IMO the 920 is the most advanced smartphone, overall, that you can get. And at $99,,, what a steal! I wish I could upgrade right now. I would be getting a red 920 asap.
Now what kind of deals are there for existing WP7.5 customers?
Unbelievable. ALMOST justifies the ETF fees I'd get from leaving my Sprint family plan... AT&T Customers won this round, for sure.
So, I checked with AT&T whether I was eligible for an upgrade from my WP 7.5 Focus S. I am not. But, after asking whether I was already a Windows Phone user, it offered me an early upgrade to an iOS device. That seems like a partnership that is destined for trouble.
@ LMFChicago - AT&T has always had an early upgrade promo for iPhones
I can't wait to get my 920 - the low price means I'm buying a wireless pad and a wireless stand for work.
LMFChicago brings up a great point. Wasn't the Lumia 900 supposed to have Hero status, and shouldn't that include this sort of treatment? It's ridiculous that AT&T promotes that.
I will be setting in front of my computer ready to pre-order....except the last time I tried to do that with the Lumia 900 it only worked if you were doing it as part of a contract. You couldn't pre-order off-contract. Does anyone have an idea if we can order off-contract?
For those WP 7.5 people crying, please stop. It is so damn annoying. I don't hear iPhone 1-2-3-4-5 people crying about new phones every year. The wp 7 and 8 will probably be around for a while, and 7.5 will most likely keep getting updates for a while. I am happy with WP7, 7.5, 7.8 or WP8. I am not crying because they are all amazing phones.
.except the last time I tried to do that with the Lumia 900 it only worked if you were doing it as part of a contract.
@joshuaqueen. Hey man...if you had an iPhone4S that you bought not even a year ago for $200 and LOCKED in a 2 yr contract, then Apple comes out with an update for the brand new iPhone5 (iOS6) then tells all pre-iPhone5 owners that the new iOS6 is ONLY compatible with the iPhone5 but then ZERO word coming from Apple on when the pre-iPhone5's will have an update you'll be upset and screaming yourself. So why don't you put a sock in it and if you don't like all the people screaming, you can visit another blog. Microsoft themselves promised a 7.8 update that would give current 7.5 phone owners a new start screen but they haven't mentioned it since then. I have a 7.5 phone and would like to know if and when the 7.8 update will be available. Not hearing a word from MS about it makes people feel like MS only cares about their new products.
ANYway....I ordered the cyan Lumia 920 online at 12:05 am along with the cyan wireless charger. I should receive it Friday. Woot!
I keep hitting the AT&T site for update on my pre-order and it still shows "processing". Ugh! I want a tracking number, that's what I want! I'll be so very disappointed if it doesn't arrive Friday.
ATT Store default phone greeting promotes iPhone 5, even before you get to the menu options. With the launch of brand new OS, this is another venue to promote Windows Phone 8.
Finally received the new Lumia 920. So far, overall, I love the device. However, right off the bat, I HATE the new Start screen. I cannot express how MUCH I hate what they've done to it. Just aligning tiles is a MUCH more work-intensive process. I attribute this largely to the fact that they screwed up the tile sizes, so now the "snap-to" grid is garbage, in my opinion. Also, OFFICE FAIL. Or, more specifically, EXCEL FAIL. The cell customization is just as limited and as bad as it is in WP7, making it nearly useless for me other than to be able to look at files I've created on the desktop and make MINOR edits. Also, I'm finding quite a few of the apps I have on my Lumia 900 cannot be installed on my 920, although I read a number of places that WP7 apps would run on WP8, albeit with some "extra space" on the screen because of resolution differences.
The phone is incredibly fast and the camera was even better than I'd hoped. Some of the additional features are welcome as far as Settings go, and the toast notifications have been enhanced a bit, too. Again, I do NOT understand all the complaining about a "notifications center". The lock screen tells most of the story and the live tiles tell the reset--any sort of "center" would be redundant. Wallet really surprised me as far as first-run. It immediately recognized my existing payment options, including AT&T, my primary credit card and PayPal. NFC---awesome.
XBox Games took forever to update, particularly w/my avatar. We're talking about over 15 minutes. I can't tell yet if this was due to the hub or Xbox servers. I saw similar problems trying to reinstall purchased games--I kept getting "store was unavailable" errors until multiple retries finally got them installed. Hopefully, this was all just an issue of setting up the device for the first time.
More to come.
