Starting today, Microsoft and Nokia are making the beta of Nokia Drive+, the company’s turn-by-turn navigation app, available for free to all Windows Phone 8 customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Download it from the Windows Phone Store.
The app remains in beta as the team fine tunes the customer experience. In the meantime, you can access full turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, offline maps, speed limit warnings, and conveniences such as day and night modes. With today’s release, the team is looking forward to hearing from even more Windows Phone customers through the app’s “feedback” tab, to help make it even better. Give it a try and let them know what you think. Learn more about Nokia Drive+ Beta .
This is great news for other Windows Phone 8 users. I do hope that Nokia adds:
* voice announcement of streets, highways and freeways, instead of "take the exit on the left."
* POI within the app
* other route calculation options (i.e. avoid toll roads, etc.)
I have already submitted feedback for the above using the Feedback option on my L920.
I hope Nokia is being compensated for this as it is a differentiating factor for their phones. I wonder if HTC or Samsung will release any of their exclusive apps to the platform.
Will a version of this app be coming for Windows Phone 7 devices?
@ChrisLynch Voice anouncements of streets is available at least in the US. You just have to download a different voice.
What about other countries? Czech Republic etc.?
PhiREflY I have the English (US) voices downloaded and it still does not announce streets, freeways or highways. That is, until I checked voices again and noticed there is one listed as "announced street names male" and "announced street names female."
Please, please, please...I beg that Microsoft teams up with Nokia or someone like Inrix and implement traffic and dynamic traffic routing into the maps application. It's kinda ridiculous that it doesn't have it when it's been a mainstay of other devices for years.
That's great! I'm glad to find out Nokia Drive can say street names in the US. Thought that was not available yet.
It says SIM card unsupported :(
it says SIM card unsupported (MCC: 515), when will this be released on other countries?
I love this app! It works great!! This is exactly what I always wanted from Bing maps... No more having to tap the screen because the man, or women, instantly tells you what's next.. This is just another example of why I'm glad to finally be on WP8.... Now, if we could just get something done about Xbox Music.. Lol!!
@ Jack Phil..... Why do all of the links on your articles lead to unrelated advertisements? You're not up to something funny are you?? You'd better not be or I'm gonna getcha❗❗❗
I've already mentioned this through the feedback link in the app but just in case, here are the things which I hope will get fixed in decreasing priority
- Sorting of search results based on distance from current point (you'd think this would be obvious :P )
- Disable 'stick to roads' setting. Because it really seems like this is the current behaviour which is to keep the blip on the road even though the GPS is reporting otherwise. (highly necessary when you're travelling around places with small alleys that don't show up on the map)
- Don't recalculate route changes without telling the user, it's really funny when the driver thinks he's on the right track but instead he's been going around in circles due to a few misinterpretations of the map. Not so funny when you're the driver!
Is this app coming for Windows Phone 7 devices? India?
What about other countries?
As usual...only USA and a few other countries.
I do not have a problem with that per se, but the communication at least should be, that "all" other countries will get this too, and approx. when.
It's kinda frustrating from our POV (all the other countries, that is)
Not impressed by you essentially putting a geo- block on a navigation (!) app, though the irony behind that is quite amazing. You really just don't want Windows Phone 8 to be a success, do you?
I fully agree. crazy to block it by SIM card. so i go to a different country, want to call cheap and have cheap data so i buy a local sim card... and can no longer use Nokia Drive to navigate. Very strange way to block your services.
and it sucks that i can't use it now since i'm not US or UK or Canadian based. if you want english feedback i understand, but there are more country's in the world where they can report back in english.
and what about rest of the world? when it will be available for other countries like Slovakia?
Is this app coming for Windows Phone 7 devices?
Sanogo 2 what are these links? Please stop posting these, as they point to a very strange site.
I cannot understand why on the 21st century, year 2013, and with the motto of Globalization, or that the World is a "small village", one could apply restrictions to world areas, when launching a FREE application based on services that already exist for the rest of the World (if you have a Lumia of course).
Plus, this is a missing core feature for the WP8 phones!
And even getting into trouble and locking it to the MCC code of the carrier?!? Really?!?
This market decisions still amaze me every day...
I feel pity of myself for living on a small, poor country...
Thank you,
Anthonws.
I'm very happy for all my American, British and Canadian cousins, but how about your long-suffering customers in Australia?!
Any update as to when this ridiculous MCC lock out will be lifted?
Sorry i'm a citizen from germany. Are we all second class customers, excepted customers from US, Canada and UK?-
I would really be impressed when Microsoft/Nokia would give us in germany the pleasure to release Nokia Drive+ here too. And of course i think that it is the best decision to open this feature for all windows 8 phone users even for the future.
Thats great news .Nokia drive supports full onlie map support for the entire world and totally free.More choice for wp users.
