Turn Windows Phone into a magic wand for Microsoft Office presentations

Turn Windows Phone into a magic wand for Microsoft Office presentations

Microsoft Research this morning took the wraps off Office Remote, a new app that lets you control Office presentations from across the classroom or boardroom using your Windows Phone 8. Download it now

The app, a collaboration between the Microsoft Research and Microsoft Office engineering teams, turns any Windows Phone 8 smartphone into a smart remote for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

“You can start your PowerPoint presentation, advance the slides, see your speaker notes, and control an on-screen laser pointer with a touch of your finger—all from your phone,” says Office program manager Bert Van Hoof. “You can also navigate between Excel worksheets and graphs, and control data slicers from the palm of your hand. And you can scroll through a Word document or quickly jump to specific sections or comments.”

Besides the app, all you need to get started is Office 2013 (all versions except Office 2013 RT), a Bluetooth-enabled PC, and this desktop add-in for Office Remote installed on your PC.

Read more on the Inside Microsoft Research blog today (and don’t miss the video). The Office Remote project site has a full rundown of app features.

Idea is really absolutely great, but... I don't know... It isn't stable yet. I connected one PowerPoint presentation successfully, but then tried to do it with the next .ppt presentation, and PowerPoint 2013 erred (closed unexpectedly), then connection to my Windows 8.1 PC no more could be established and that's it. Such things just have to be very reliable, you're standing in front of the audience. Please work on it, update it, it's a killer app, that I would really be using with next more reliable versions.

I was able to download it in Germany. My region settings are for Germany, I only changed the browser language to english (US). I took me a while to understand the instructions though. It would have been helpful to include: after you have installed the Office Remote application on your PC, Words, Excel and PowerPoint Show an Office Remote Tab, where you can activate the connection to your phone. This was the last place I searched for the tab ;-(

Great app - works smoothly - a great WOW-factor for any presentation!

Thanks Microsoft, for once again making the cool stuff available only to the US. Because "the rest of the world" is only a myth anyways...

For people outside the US, just change your language+region to US in your phone settings and reboot it.

Access the store again and install Office Remote. Voilà ! :)

Ah no, tell me it ain't so?  No Canadian downloads? :

  • Aw. Office 2013 only? At least it'll work for one of my devices...

  • New link works great ... thanks @Michael.  Unfortunately, this does not work with Surface RT or Surface 2. I'll have to wait until I get home to try it with my laptop. Also, 1 other "qualifier" is that your desktop or laptop must have Bluetooth to make the connection with your Windows Phone.

I'm hoping that they add Windows RT support sometime soon!!!

  • Apologies everyone. The link I included earlier was to an outdated test version of the app. The download link now points to the right spot.

  • It definitely is not currently available for us Canadians.

    Can't buy app

Sorry, you can't get apps in this region. Please check the Store in your region

  • This function come to windows rt in future?

You can search for it in the Store on your phone, published by Microsoft Research.

  • Any plans to make this compatible with RT?

  • Can't install from your phone either.  However I'm in Canada so I wonder if we are on the outside looking in.

  • It looks like its still linked to the internal beta account

  • It will work if you go to the store on your phone

  • Unfortunately, the Windows Phone store says "You don't have the required permissions to download this app."
