We all encounter a number of files in our daily lives across the various devices we use. And often times we need ways to manage these files and share them with others – even on our phones. We’ve heard your feedback loud and clear that managing files needs to be easier to do on your Windows Phone and Joe Belfiore announced earlier this month during a Reddit AMA that we would address your feedback with an official file manager app. Today, we are releasing that app. It’s called Files and it makes it easy and intuitive to manage your files on your device running Windows Phone 8.1. You can download it free from the Windows Phone Store here.
The Files app allows you to access all the files stored on your phone. If your phone supports expandable memory with an SD card, like the Lumia 1520, you can use the Files app to access files on the SD card as well. You can browse through files and folders, open and search for files that are on the phone or on SD card storage. You can create new folders and arrange your files across those folders using move and copy functions and you can also rename and delete your files. And you also have the ability to share one or many files on your phone with your friends, family or work colleagues.
We appreciate the feedback you are sending us on how to improve our products and experiences. Please continue to do so here on UserVoice, leaving a comment here on this blog post, or via the Files app.
Can't find Adobe downloads on my 1020.would like to "share" files inside the app... Mostly okay...
I am using a Nokia Lumia 1020. When I try to install the app (im Dutch called Bestanden) I get the message that the app is nog available for my device!
Really appreciate you sharing this article
what's lacking here is the thumbnail view and the properties for each file, allowing us to view much more detailed info of the file... hoping for these features to come by the next updates....
I can not download it. Everytime its show that files app need your attention.
I'm using Lumia 520
I can't download it !!! (I tried with my HTC 8x...)
Glad to have it and glad it is an optional install since a lot people will not need to use it at all. Where is lists Phone and SD Card when you start it, there should be a third option for OneDrive.
It will be really nice to have only one complete file manager with both local and OneDrive files support instead of two similar apps. Share contract is not a solution here.
Translation for the french version of the application is really bad. Hopefully you will fix it or users are going to be confused.
Am eager to download in my Lumia ! let me know, this application can access all type of file formates?
Great, very handy, but OneDrive integration is missing.
bharathaleni WP already supports ZIP archives, just tried - no extra context menu on ZIP files, when trying to open it it shows the ZIP contents and gives ability to open archived files.
Great ! this includes WinZip support ??
It would be nice to automatically display the contents of the phone memory, SD card if the device is not supported. And on the tile with the music album art display. Just have to revive tiles folders in OneDrive.
This should come by default with Windows Phone 8.1 - it is a core feature
Compress files and folders
Open .rar archives with password!!
