Last month, we released Beta 2 of the Windows Phone SDK 7.1. Yesterday, Windows Phone Engineering CVP Terry Myerson announced Windows Phone OS RTM. Today, I’m excited to announce that we are offering a refresh of the beta tools to our registered developer community.
Starting this morning, you can download the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 “Beta 2 Refresh” from the ‘Mango’ Connect site. We’ve received positive feedback on the Mango tools and bits we’ve shared, but appreciate that many devs are still interested in working with a more complete build. Today’s refresh of the tools represent a month of great progress by the engineering team, further refining and improving the Mango developer experience.
If that isn’t exciting enough, we’ve also pushed an OS update to the Microsoft Update servers this morning, allowing you to refresh retail Windows Phones that devs updated to Mango over the last month. If you previously updated, you can expect the following notice on your phone over the next few days:
This happy little message is the sign that you can receive Build 7712, which corresponds to today’s WPSDK 7.1 release. Before you ask (and I know you will, because folks started asking yesterday :) ), this build is not yesterday’s RTM build – it’s still a pre-release build. For RTM, you’ll need to wait for the official update like everyone else (more on the why later in the post).
The process to update your phone with build 7712 is pretty straight-forward:
For those who may be inspired by this release and update their phone for the first time, you’ll notice a much more streamlined experience from the one we rolled out last month. Based on the feedback (and support tickets) from developers participating in the program, the process has been improved in two places. First, we’ve updated the server logic in the first update (739x -> 7401) to better account for ‘Walshed’ phones and phones that had the support tool run incorrectly on them. Second, the Zune client has been updated to link your updates into a single update run. The new Zune client automatically checks for new updates after it completes an update – meaning you only need to start the update process once and Zune handles the rest until you arrive at your final destination build (in this case, 7712).
Today’s refresh provides you with everything you need to update your app for Mango – the tools and the OS image – now. From this point forward, the tools will continue to be refined and finished (e.g. removing many of the ‘known issues’, improvements to the emulator and profiler, and a few cosmetic changes within VS). In fact, once you install the tools, you’ll notice that it shows up in the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ list with the ‘RC’ moniker. What you have here is a build in the early part of our Release Candidate cycle – the end result of which should be in your hands in the coming month.
For a full list of changes to between Beta 2 and the Refresh, I recommend checking out the release notes on Connect; but here are my top 5 improvements that I think that our devs will find extremely helpful:
For the folks wondering why we’re not providing the ‘RTM’ version, there are two main reasons. First, the phone OS and the tools are two equal parts of the developer toolkit that correspond to one another. When we took this snapshot for the refresh, we took the latest RC drops of the tools and the corresponding OS version. Second, what we are providing is a genuine release candidate build, with enough code checked in and APIs locked down that this OS is close enough to RTM that, as a developer, it’s more than capable to see you through the upcoming RC drop of the tools and app submission. It’s important to remember that until the phone and mobile operator portion of Mango is complete, you’re still using a pre-release on your retail phone – no matter the MS build. Until that time, enjoy developing and cruising around on build 7712 – it’s a sweet ride, to be sure. :)
There’s a lot of goodness in this update that you should appreciate as a developer and as an end-user. As with the Mango OS Beta 2 pre-release, it only includes the Microsoft portion of the Mango update and carries all of the same caveats about beta software. And remember to protect your backup (have we mentioned you should protect your backup? keep it secret; keep it safe), as that’s your ticket back to the production Windows Phone train and any subsequent updates.
With WPSDK RC about a month away, now is the time to update your app to Mango:
The team continues to work hard to get you everything you need to bring your apps to life. If you have any additional questions, you can of course comment on this post; additionally, the Mango dev forum is pretty active, and my twitter handle is @cliffsimpkins. And Larry’s a great person to give a shout if you have any issues or questions on dev content; for those unaware, his handle recently changed to @larryalieberman.
But enough of my yammering – go get your phone updated and get developing!
7/27 18.29 PDT Update: I updated the above to emphasize step one of the process based on a confirmation from engineering - you must copy your backup elsewhere because the Zune uninstall auto-deletes any backups taken

@VictorWPB - Hopefully the final release (along with your Omnia 7 drivers) will address your issue; that does sound painful. The connectivity issues in the apps you cited are known app compat issues, and we've reached out to the authors to get it fixed.
@Teufel - To pin local scout, open up the 'Maps' app (program list -> Maps), click the 'scout' button' (which opens up Local Scout), expand the app bar (click the ',,,' at the bottom of the screen) and click 'pin'. It should then pin to your Start screen.
@d_ganggreen - The engineering team is working on having a solution for those who have lost their backup. There are some risks to bringing people forward, but more on this in the coming weeks.
@Ark-kun - Sorry that this pre-release option doesn't work for you. The goal here was to provide an early drop of the tools and a corresponding phone image; to help devs get their apps ready for the GA release. Given that 7712 is the equivalent of the RTM build from an application perspective, I don't understand how releasing the 7712 build is a disservice to devs. Also, this program is intended to be run on development devices; it isn't intended for use on day-to-day phones. If we were to provide a fully supported program for the full-fidelity consumer experience that your asking for, we would have to cut features from the release. If the choice was data preservation over features in the phone, would that change your opinion?
@jsantana0793 - The pictures 'Extras' section is a breaking change in WP7.5 - apps that are a Pictures plug-in will need to use the meta-data structure to show up in the Pictures app in WP7.5.
@shan_mcarthur - My data feeds from App Hub registrants broke with the July 18 release. They're working on getting it fixed, but you should have gotten an invite on Aug 11 (from the last extract I got from them - hoping to get extracts on a weekly basis now).
@Black Diamonds - I have to admit, I'm not sure what your question was. There are lots of reasons for getting the '!' on songs (for me, it happens mostly with bandwidth or if I've downloaded a purchased song more times than is permitted).
@Peter - totally hear you; the request for ability to chat along multiple Live Messenger IDs is one that the team has heard (I personally have about 4 Live IDs that I've picked up over time for different services, and my Gamer Tag/Zune ID had always been different than my IM ID). The consumer feature folks are working on getting an official UserVoice website set up to receive and track this kind of feedback. In the meantime, you can log it in the dev UserVoice site (http://wpdev.uservoice.com/) and mark it as a 'Consumer' suggestion, and we'll be sure to migrate it over.
@dcutting - You should probably open up a support ticket via the App Hub portal.
I am trying to restore my samsung focus back to NoDo and I keep receiving a 80181349 error stating that my backup is not valid. I have a backup of my backup that I've copied over that is 12.5 GB and I really would like to get back to NoDo so that I can do a straight upgrade to 7712 to see if some issues I"m having are do to me upgrading from the previous beta release, which I suspect it is. Anyone out there with knowledge of how to get this back would be great.
Would really appreciate MS revisiting the whole "WLM only works with primary Live account" decision. Add in the mess going on with IM+ (the only IM client I've found that seems to do what is expected - don't even consider the current "official" WLM messenger app). I use a completely separate Live account for my IM traffic. I want to be able to use that one for IM. I understand that it's not supposed to be a replacement for desktop, but it really should give me an option to choose which Live account(s) I want to use for IM. If your team doesn't want to do this, then change the policy being shoved at the app makers that they can't develop an IM client for WLM. At least they let you choose your account(s) and give us some flexibility in what we're doing.
I understand that you have to make decisions on features to include/exclude, but limiting the IM feature to just the primary Live account is really limiting to end users who have been around for a while or perhaps families who share that primary Live account for Zune / Apps.
* expired? That is supposed to read as experienced - not sure why that came up - got to hate those auto-spell checkers ... *sigh*
@ Cliff - one question here in the latest update; I am receiving constant errors in ZUNE with a lot of (!) when it comes ot downloading (whether Music to Apps) ; so bouncing back and forth with the installation of the Windows 7 Phone isn't really good for the device.
I do notice something - and I would like to know if others have expired this; the "Now you see it and now you don't; of your Celluar Provider in your Settings? Take a close watch at it - I also notice that the sound enhancements also reverts back to OFF ? The configurations in Settings are having to be redone constantly - especially if you had plugged it to USB port and unplugged it, so it seems you lose your WiFi connections as well even though your WiFi connections is exceeding sttrong before? It does not happen all the time ... but it does get interesting when your device is showing up in ZUNE as two, when you only have 1? REMOVING IT is not an option in Zune. Having to reinstall ZUNE to get it to function properly is an issue here.
However one must be aware, Zune itself needs to be up-to-date and get up with Windows 7 instead of way back in the compatibility mode. Would this be an issue? I have tried some of the member's apps and created some apps, but noticed it is causing some issues here (because zUNE needs to be updated).
What I did was - I pushed the button to the extreme by throwing it "ALL IN" in ZUNE with HDMI with II Divo - (LIVE) in my collection in ZUNE; interestingly, ZUNE rexognized it but had no idea where to put it - as it is a Music/Video. (Trust me - it is truely awesome on Win Mango, it keeps getting better and better as the progress in Win OS 7 Phone goes along ... this should be a tremendous BOOST right here for Microsoft's ZUNE and Windows 7's Phone - HDMI Live!)
I had 28 people who viewed II Divo in HDMI in the Mango BETA (they're aware of what I am doing) - rating this on a scale of 1 (terrible) to 5 (awesome) scale - and they gave it a 10 to 60 star rating! ALL of them!
Doesn't this tell you something right there? :-) Mission Impossible has become Mission Accomplished! Here's one best comment - the one who gave it a 60 star rating "I feel like, so I am sitting so right there in front of them, and the sound is, just like, so like, I paid $350 big bucks for this concert!"
Isn't that just a huge boost? Who says Windows 7 OS Phone and ZUNE can't do HDMI's? I have them all on my Win OS 7 Mango Phone and it's working fine and it does not eat up all your resources, hardly anything at all; and in ZUNE ... well... leave it to ZUNE to figure out where it's supposed to go. LOL! :-D But it is in my collection though.
@ everyone - I had returned after a havoc of a mess (don't ask, don't tell policy - LOL)... nevertheless; here is one workaround that will work on ZUNE and Windows OS 7 Phone: in preseving all your data without loss of apps to what-nots. If you do have a EXHDD - it does pay to use it -COPY everything over to the EXHDD including AppData Local (and in some cases - don't ask - I have found Zune in Roaming too); Program Files; Program Data , This way, for each version you move up to, name that "Back Up" to whatever you wish. I have mine in accordance to the dates they had originated from,
I am registered in App Hub and have my phone unlocked, but I don't have access to the connect site. How can I obtain the latest phone image so that I can flash it to my phone?
Missing in Mango: "Extras" when selecting a picture.. "Extras" would insert a picture selected into a downloaded photo app. Where did that go? I tried to see if there was a missing option that I forget to activate in settings, but there was no selection. So where did the "Extras" go??????? please send me info at: email@example.com
Dear Windows Phone Team.
Please, never do this again!
1) Don't ever ask developers to use an older beta build AFTER the RTM version was already made available to some other parties.
2) Don't ever create an "update" process where developer MUST loose all apps and messages (which cannot be synced or backed up) if he wants to test the tools. I think that you did this because of carriers, but the people with unlocked phones suffer from these illogical decisions too.
Some carriers's opinions are more important than the data of developers? Ok, we heard you.
That's really insulting and shows your position towards developers (as if the Zune and Windows Mobile situations wren't an indicator).
Ok, so I crashed my computer and re-installed Windows (running via bootcamp on mac). Only after the fact realized how bad off I am now. I do not have the original backup of my WP7 prior to the Beta testing.
Am I totally out of luck, or will there be any way to get future updates?
I see the same. My LinkedIn contacts doesn't show in my contacts list, but their postings do show in 'What's new'. Strange. Perhaps it's because my primary Windows Live account is different from the e-mail I use for my LinkedIn connection?
@Cliff Simpkins I have been using Mango build 7712 since it first dropped. Tuesday I reset my Samsung Focus to see if the beta version of Zune would reinstall my apps. After the reset, I noticed a little gem on the default Mango start screen. Local Scout had its own tile on the start screen. Because Zune didn't reinstall my apps that were previously installed using Zune, today I restored my device back to the first beta build and then upgraded to build 7712. How can I Pin to Start the Local Scout app? And why didn't Zune reinstall my apps? Thanks.
Yes, you are right, time and date should show up instantly just like it used to, the delay is something useless. Office is fine on my device (Omnia 7) I believe 7712 build is having some bugs that are going to be fixed in RC.
Did this update completely break Office for anyone else? I haven't had any other issues with the phone since the update, but office won't even open. It starts to open and then just crashes and returns me to the home screen. I tried a full restart and nothing changed.
Also, some of the UI changes are worse than the original. What's with the delay of the time and date showing up when first hitting the power button on the phone? When i'm just checking the time, i don't want to wait while it slowly fades on. It should show up instantly just like it used to. There are lots of other little UI details like this that are going the wrong direction in the update.
Thank you for your response; however, hard resetting the device and updating to build 7712 haven’t made the experience better. Now I’m using my Omnia 7 without SIM (Wi-Fi only) This is the only way to have fewer random reboots. My device has no problems on NoDo, but for testing applications I need to have Mango Beta on my device. I’ll wait for RC, please make it available soon, so I could test my application on 3G network too. Also there are some applications that are having problems with build 7712 (ex. Fox News can’t update the video list and France 24 is not able to connect to the live stream)
@techknackblogs - Keep an eye on the Windows Phone blogs -- I know developer timelines, but not MO release schedules. :)
@zshakoblah - The Beta 2 Refresh of the tools is only available via Connect (connect.microsoft.com/.../DownloadDetails.aspx)
@jvanderburgh007 - That error can typically happen when the UpdateWP doesn't match Zune -- the instructions call out checking for a couple files in the Zune directory (the exe and a dll) - can you verify they aren't there?
@VictorWPB - I've heard some folks having stability issues once updating, but a device reset fixed it (something goes wonky sometimes when updating, particularly between Mango builds, which is not a retail/RTM scenario -- internal dogfooders have to restore back to NoDo to go up to individual builds). If you're not attached to your data, I recommend trying a wipe (Settings -> About -> Reset) and see if that makes the experience better.
@acctman - Folks on my end say to check that your running the latest version of Zune, and perhaps try the restore on a different PC. If that fails, open up an App Hub support ticket so we can route it to the right engineering folks.
Well have taken the plunge and gone Mango over the weekend. First impressions are very good. Some observations:
- My Samsung Focus V1.3 with 16GB memory expansion would NOT backup during the process.
- had to do hard reset of phone first (even with enough HDD space and ony 5GB of 22 on my phone). bugger.
- Backup and Mango install (Beta2) then ran perfectly fine.
- 7712 looks pretty stable so far.
- HATE the new lime colour - WTF? It looks SO washed out compared to before - why? how? Can this be fixed?
- Updates seemed very quick and seamless on a hard-reset phone with just live-id configured.
More time to play around now and put together some more impressions and feedback into a post at www.wpdownunder.com :)
Good work guys.
PS - Pls pls pls fix the lime theme colour in the RC version of Mango. The washed out and pale Mango Lime is terrible by contrast to the NoDo version. As Lime was my main theme, and with a SAMOLED screen, I have to settle for Red or Blue until you fix this. The colour vibrancy and intensity is what needs to be corrected. TY
Is anyone going to address the restore problem in zune the Restoration Error 801812E0 ? Zune is refusing to restore my backup
@cliff: Got it, using it, loving it. @slaythoven: I replaced my LG Quantum (which I think is a great phone) when it wouldn't accept the NoDo update and have had no problem since (No one ever recommended a "wipe", and I never did one. If you mean using "Remove All Content" in Zune, I did that)
I updated through zune(04.08.2134) and it went fine. I dont see the option in zune to restore to a previous backup though. I have the original backup saved externally. I'll try and copy it to the zune folder.
I wanna know this too. I don't really care about the events, but I want the birthdays and I don't want to add them to a seperate calendar manually.
Facebook Events show up properly in my (Outlook) Calendar, but Facebook birthdays don't for some reason. Bug or feature?
I was happy with the beta 2 (7661), but build 7712 is too unstable on Samsung Omnia 7 and my phone is crashing many times in a day. I AM NOT HAPPY :-(
I think Windows Phone Team should have spent a little more time on the new beta release. I cannot test any application on the phone. Phone reboots randomly during 3G and wifi connection. Phone reboots, if you want to make a phone call while phone is downloading in background. Phone crashes randomly, when Bing wants to access the GPS sensor and camera. PLEASE release a stable build or make 7661 available again
I have installed Zune, installed the updatewp.exe, but when I run the retailupdate program, it says updatewp.exe is not found, I followed the directions, but it will not work
Lots of little tweaks and fixes, but one design flaw still bugs me:
When in Music+Videos, tapping on the 'marketplace' link takes me to the main marketplace and I need to tap 'music' again. Why not take me directly into the music marketplace... or at least that position in the pivot (like you do with search)?
I can't find this "Beta 2 Refresh" anywhere. Could I have link please? Thank you!
I like probably most people heeded advice and made three copies of my NoDo backup. But since you guys over at MS emphasized this so much and repeated this advice, it's a wonder you didn't just write a vbscript or something quickly to try to force people to do this and package it up with an auto-extracting .ZIP file. At the very least you'd probably have reduced the amount of "non-compliance" by 50%.
When can we expect the Mango update on our Phone from our telecom operator??
Linkedin contacts don't show up, does anyone else get them...doesn't see that way on other sites ?
My phone advised me there was an update. I conncected to Zune, and Zune told me there was an update, and I updated to version 7712 - It went flawlessly, much smoother than before. I did not see a new Zune install. The Zune version that did this update to 7712 on my machine was 4.8.2098.0. Is there another Zune version that I need to install (should have installed??)
For those of you who've lost your backup files through Zune deleting them, I've posted a step by step POSSIBLE solution to my blog here: blog.andrewtechhelp.com/.../a-possible-saviour-for-your-windows-phone-nodo-backup-for-wp-devs
I really hope this will get your backups back for you!
Edit of last post: Of course I ment toast - not tile notifications...
In nodo it was possible to upload images with the web browser using any HTML file upload dialog. This standard functionality of a web browser disappeared in the first developer beta release. Unfortunately it is still missing in the refresh. I hope it will be back in the final release! This is a really important standard feature!
Another thing: Before mango we were able to change the general sound of tile notifications since they were treated like normal notifications. In Mango they are treated as “all other notifications” and the sound cannot be changed. I hope this will change too!
Color "lime" is gone??
The replacement looks not half as good as good old lime did =(
BTW when I post a message from this build it sure would be nice to see on Twitter that the app/device used to post was "Windows Phone" instead of "WindowsLive". You do want more people to see other folks using Windows Phone, right?
Restored back to retail and updated again. The music is working now and the reserved content space is back down to 1.88 GB. However a couple of things I notice in this update on a Samsung Focus. One the theme colors on the home screen seem washed out and the dark grays are a lighter gray color. Hopefully this is something that gets fixed once Samsung gets a whach at this update. It is odd that the update changed my theme color from blue to red. I'm also disappointed that I still can't listen to Netflix movies using Bluetooth. What is up with that? Is this a Netflix app problem or a limitation still present in build 7712? Oh yeah, I still occassional READ ERROR in the Zune software client (latest version) that requires a device reboot to get the device sync'ing again with the Zune sw.
Will this update an LG developer phone stuck on build 7003?
well update directly done. all fine and dandy now.
@r_keith_hill - the 'reserved space and other content' is a glob a a bunch of stuff: your email and calendar, app files and data (e.g., navigation, cached data/images, game data, etc.), as well music and videos copied over to your phone from other computers (e.g., you copied a few albums or a movie from guest computer; I do this a lot from my work laptop, as I split my library between home and work); and it also accounts for the 'reserved space' that you set within Zune.
Just on the side... successfully updated from 7661 to 7712 on my HTC Mozart using the Windows Phone 7 Connector on Mac OS X Lion.
Any news if the new Zune client supports the loading of DRM content to the phone?
Specifically, the digital copies you get with most Blu-ray discs.
Just a reminder, the update will hang on Step 6 if your phone is plugged into a USB hub rather than directly into your computer. I think the notes mention this, but if the update hangs on Step 6 when your phone reboots, just unplug the usb from your hub, plug it into the computer and re-start the update. It would be good to get this addressed in the final Zune Software update!
restored. updating to 7712 directly from the new Zune Client now.
i followed the update process and it returned me an error saying there isnt any more update. zune initially prompted me to install the update but i followed the update process instead. zune client > UpdateWP > Update. and it just returned me an error saying there is no update available. im now forced to restore to the backup. will see what happens then
Alright nevermind, I cancelled and restarted the update process and now its seems to be working fine :) dont know what happened there
I'm also still getting a "READ ERROR" when connecting the phone to the Zune SW (both B2 and B2 refresh versions of Zune). Says it can't access important data on my device. Wonder if it's time to revert back to retail and then try an update to 7712?
is the zune update supposed to take so long? it seems to have been stuck at "media on your device is being backed up. This process may take a few minutes to complete." for about 20 minutes now. Is this normal?
BTW when I originally upgraded to 7661 it seems that about 5.38 GB of my Samsung Focus (which only has 8 GB to start with) is listed in the Zune SW as "Reserved Space and Other Content". I have a feeling this was my music that no longer shows up under 7661 or 7712. Anybody have any suggestions on how to reclaim that space and resync my music?
@Zulhardy - Current plan is still the same as last month: you will still need to return to an MO/OEM supported state (Build 739x) before you will receive the update to move to the final update. This was also covered in the post above.
As a note to folks, I confirmed with engineering that the Zune uninstall does indeed delete the backup files, and updated the blog text to emphasize that.
Also, folks have commented that the instructions on Connect refer to how to update to 7661 - that is correct; I haven't rev'd those instructions to account for 7712 (those instructions were placed here). I'll update the PDF on the Connect site tomorrow to make that more clear.
Can 7712 devices update fully to 7720 Mango later on?
@ Andrew Tech Help thanks for that tip, it seemed to help somewhat. I was able to restore the folder to a version from a week ago. Now it contains a folder with a 4 part letter and number code name, which in turn contains a properties and a restore point folder. However, when I open the zune client I still don't have a restore option in the settings->phone->update tab.
Would it be OK to restore back to retail from 7661 and then update to 7712? I only ask because in the process of updating to 7661 all my music somehow got misplaced. That is, it doesn't appear on my phone but the storage usage would seem to indicate it is still taking up space on the device.
It seems that the update instructions are for the 7661 update. Is this what other folks are seeing?
For those of you who have accidently deleted your backup because you didn't make a second copy of it outside the AppData folder, this MIGHT be able to help you.
If you goto C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\ and right click the Microsoft folder and choose properties, you might be able to goto the Previous Versions tab and make a copy of the a previous version of the entire Microsoft folder (using that Copy button at the bottom) which will probably include your backup.
I'm hoping this works out for you.
Keep up the great work guys, the platform is getting better and better. That said Cliff, can you please, for the love of anything that is dear to you, explain to me why you're REMOVING features from the OS? I was so happy to see that IE had, from day one, a "Find on page" feature that iOS still doesn't have. Why would you remove it from IE9? Also, I understand the premise behind the new address bar, but having used it for a while now, usability is severely reduced. I've posted about it here: forums.create.msdn.com/.../521470.aspx
I'm desperate to get this across, I've posted it in like 10 places, maybe this one will work :)
Could we have a direct link to the tools refresh? I can't find it anywhere.
@jmerrey I had the same problem. But I have been able to find my backup thanks to the restore points or windows backup. You should take a look at this first
unfortunately it's too late for my backup
yes we were told over and over, so I'm not mad at anyone but myself, but it's gone
Important info for everyone - If you uninstall the current zune and re-install the new zune client, it wipes the backup data from the Your Drive:\Users\YourUsername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update folder. So make sure you back-up before starting anything. Surprised its not explicitly warned (about the wiping) in the steps.
I can't connect my phone after installing these new tools. WIndows doesn't even recognize the device.
I've been trying to get an app hub account for several days. I keep getting the error "Invalid value for field Country." when I try to register in the app hub after choosing Canada as my country. Anyone else having this problem? Am I doing something wrong?
Does this new Mango Developer Update include OEM drivers so we can start using the compass and/or motion sensor APIs?
I'm guessing you guys are still working on RTM Dorado then...
One question, will you finally bump the version up to 5.0? Or will it stay 4.8?
Is the WiFi hotspot feature included?
WP7.5 with 7712 is still dropping A2DP over bluetooth when video is played ... pretty bad news :( at least for me
@Seven_PRX sorry, I missed your second post.
@Seven_PRX You missed option "Only show post from people visible in my contacts list", when you select it, no spam from Twitter will show up in "What's New", if Twitter contacts is not included in you contacts list.
Addendum: so while what you say works, it's again not an optimal solution. I have a bunch of accounts, which I have Not added to my Contact List. But, I still want to see updates from all those people in "Whats New" The usage as you suggest under "Only show updates from people in my contact list" won't solve that.
@ Juozas: What you are saying is just related to your Contact List.
You can add a Twitter account, and unselect the "add Twitter Contacts to Contact List" - but the messages/updates will still show up in "What's New". So, the Contact List is a seperate thing from "What's New".
Would uninstalling the Zune client delete our backup file?
"I would prefer Checkboxes for all Media types. That way I can add a Twitter account, but at "Whats New" select all my Social media accounts, except Twitter. That way no spam, but, I would have my Twitter account added."
You can do this by selecting Settings in People Hub and hitting "filter my contact list", there you can choose from where your contacts will be shown (Twitter is unchecked on my phone by default), and then selecting "Only show post from people visible in my contacts list".
I don't see a "restore" option in my zune client like I had before. Is this normal?
@Chrys: while I understand what you're saying - I don't agree.
Re Live Messenger: if it works for your primary account, why not make it work for your secondary (WLM) accounts too?
Re the checkboxes/groups: Yes, groups can be used like that. But, why not add the checkboxes like I suggest? Both ways work - for me personally I prefer my 'solution'; you might prefer the other.
And Groups won't work for Twitter Accounts, unless I hadd my Twitter Contacts to my Contact List - which I don't want - and which wouldn't be necesarry in my proposed checkbox solution.
"Live Messenger doesn't look at secondary Live Messenger Accounts. So, if you have 2 or more Live (Messenger) accounts, you can only Chat (in Messaging) with the contacts from your 'primary' (phone) account."
The built-in Live Messenger feature isn't meant to be a complete replacement to say the Windows Live Messenger client on your desktop. Who knows, maybe Microsoft is looking to add this in Windows Phone 8, or the next update after Mango (not Apollo.)
This is what Groups are for. If you have people that you track, and want to keep track of updates, put them in a group, and pin that group to the Start Screen.
Thanks Cliff. All of the necessary files are on the Connect portal. Updating my dev phone to 7712 now.
So what I meant to say about the "What's New" is that it's currently an All or Nothing display (well, All or 1 :). I wish it could be an "All except X" display, with the use of Checkboxes.
Things which I still think miss (so including in 7712):
Live Messenger doesn't look at secondary Live Messenger Accounts. So, if you have 2 or more Live (Messenger) accounts, you can only Chat (in Messaging) with the contacts from your 'primary' (phone) account.
In "Whats New" we can (and could) Filter on Social Media type. So see All, just Facebook, etc. Anyway, I want to add Twitter account. But that will Spam my "Whats New" a lot. So, then I have to always just set it to "Facebook" for example, but then I'll miss out of Live updates, LinkedIN, etc. And I would have to switch over to those everytime.
I would prefer Checkboxes for all Media types. That way I can add a Twitter account, but at "Whats New" select all my Social media accounts, except Twitter. That way no spam, but, I would have my Twitter account added.
And Volume/Ring "Profiles" - We need that :) Hate going to settings everynight to turn off Vibrate :)
@t800t8 - Yes, it is only being made available to registered app hub members. We didn't do enough testing on this particular build to get the green light to do fully public release. It is stable, but not tested to the extent we do for full public releases. This was a major reason on why you see this released as a 'refresh' rather than as a 'beta 3'. The RC (in Aug) will be released publicly (and freely) to all again.
@sunco - For now, your best option is to open an App Hub support ticket, and we'll get you taken care of. I'm working with the App Hub team to get updated lists of new devs (the feed broke when we updated App Hub early last week - and they're addressing bugs that affect devs posting and getting money before my invite list - go figure ;-) ); I genuinely apologize for the inconvenience - it isn't the ideal way to get this done; in the meantime, a support ticket is the best way to go.
For those as me who are new App Hub members, how can we get the invitation code ? If my app uses some Mango stuff do i need to upload two separated apps ? For Mango and non Mango users.. "if you have Mango click here, if not then here"
Is the Windows Phone SDK 7.1 “Beta 2 Refresh” ONLY available to download for registered developers?
Folks - based on discoverability concerns, I went back into Connect and updated the name of the download package and moved the date up to today. It should be much more discoverable.
Just finish update my HTC T9292 to 7712!
The Zune Update just in Connect :-)
What will be the upgrade path once 7720 is released? Will we need to restore to our original backup (before Mango Beta 2)? Will Zune keep more than one backup for us to select?
I *think* the "Mango Trial Build Update for WP Devs" is what's needed, even though the "release date" on it is 6/28/2011.
Excuse me, where can I find the screenshot function on the emulator? i can't find it!!! please help me! thank you!!
Is the new Refresh the download packaged titled "Mango Trial Build Update for WP Devs"? That is what I see on connect under downloads as well as the WPSDK Beta 2 refresh which I am pretty sure is just the SDK.
So, I downloaded the new WPSDK71 ZIP. Where is the new Zune Client software installer?
There is apparently no new Zune client included in the refreshed SDK and there is no separate download on Connect for it.
@johndandison - My understanding is that the update will work, but you'll want the updated client to sync and to communicate with the updated WPSDK.
@slaythoven - Unsure; you may have better luck since the team posted an update last week (build 7403), which fixed a gaggle of the 739x -> Mango issues.
I'm user Zune 4.8 beta can up Mango build 7712?
What about us LG Quantum users who couldn't go to the Mango beta without a complete system wipe? Will the updated files allow us to go from 7392 to 7712?
Zune is telling me there is an update to 7712 available - should we go through the process above, or can we update directly through Zune?
