App roundup: Discovering new websites, music, recipes, and vengeful skeletons

As you might have seen here, there are now four times the number of apps in the Windows Store as when Windows 8 was released a few months ago. There were 10,000 apps added in the last month alone! In this week’s roundup, I’m taking a look at some of these new apps that I’ve been playing around with over the past week.

StumbleUpon

Websites in StumbleUpon

I’ve been using StumbleUpon for years now, and I’m happy to report that it’s now available in the Store. If you’re not familiar with it, StumbleUpon shows you cool things on the Internet and helps you discover content you might not have found. As I check out the videos, photos, and webpages, I can “like” what I come across and then get more recommendations based on what I liked. Taking me from one interesting thing to another, it’s a personalized and fascinating way to explore the web.

KEXP Artist Discovery

I’m always looking for new music, and one of my favorite ways to discover artists is by listening to KEXP. KEXP is a public radio station based in Seattle that’s spent the last decade championing new and exciting music and sharing it with the world. You don’t need to live near Seattle to experience KEXP for yourself with the KEXP Artist Discovery app. Stream the live KEXP radio broadcast, watch videos or live performances, listen to in-studio performances, check out the archive of shows, and explore different artists. Rather than jump on the bandwagon of the next big thing, you can help lead the charge by discovering music that matters to you and sharing it with friends.

Everyday Food

Healthy food options in Everyday Food app

I’m about a week into my New Year’s resolutions, and although staying motivated to get to the gym hasn’t been an issue (yet), eating healthier is definitely proving to be a bigger challenge than I expected. In my mind, the phrase “I need to eat healthier” has always been synonymous with “I need to eat nothing but salads without dressing.” This probably stems from the fact that my normal repertoire of recipes doesn’t really include many healthy options. Luckily, Everyday Food includes a section completely dedicated to recipes that are not only healthy, but tasty as well. After perusing for a bit, I tried out the mango salad with pork and then the vegetable bimbimbap, and found these dishes easy to make and more satisfying than just a salad without dressing.

The Gunstringer

Gameplay in The Gunstringer

I recently discovered The Gunstringer, and after playing it for a couple of days, I think it’s a great addition to the games I have installed on my Surface. Taking on the role of a skeleton cowboy marionette (yes, you read that correctly), I run, roll, jump, and shoot my way through a quest to chase down the evil posse that betrayed me. At first, the game seemed simple, but as I progressed through each level, it became clear I needed a keen eye and quick reflexes. Install it, invest some time with it, and let sweet, sweet vengeance be your reward!

Note: Some apps might not be available in all countries or regions.
