GLOBAL – If, like me, you’ve ever found yourself urgently needing to post online, but you’ve left the laptop at home, putting words to keyboard will be almost impossible. But not if you have a Nokia to hand, installed with the latest app to hit Ovi Store. This week I examine the WordPress for Nokia app, written by Nokia and WordPress developers using Qt.

One of the advantages, or disadvantages – depending on how you look at things, of living in this hyper-connected age means that we are always online and plugged in to the world. With WordPress for Nokia in your pocket you can load up your WordPress-powered blog, start writing from your phone and post online in an instant, which means you never need to miss that deadline again.

WordPress is an open source blog package, that gives you the tools to create written masterpieces to post online. The people behind WordPress, Automattic, have been around since 2005 and they’ve seen the platform’s users grow from a handful to become the most-used blog tool in its category. They’re also responsible for other online tools such as PollDaddy, Gravatar and other well known Internet services, so it’s safe to say they know their stuff.

Written in Qt, the app is fast. Blazing fast. Head of the project Anssi Mäkelä said, “First we made a clear decision to cover most of the current and upcoming platforms, so it was pretty obvious that to meet this demand Qt was the only way to go. This app is extraordinary when it comes to performance, especially on latest Symbian^3 devices its unbelievably fast and responsive to your commands.”

When loading up WordPress for Nokia for the first time you’ll be asked to enter your blog URL, your username and password. Once that’s been accepted you’ll be taken to your blog’s dashboard where you’ll see the option to view comments, posts or pages on the tabs at the top of the screen. It’s there that you’ll be able to control most aspects of your blog and keep it up to date on-the-move.

With Comments, you’ll be able to read what’s waiting for your attention and you’ll be able to respond by approving, deleting, replying or sending any of those junk messages to your Spam box.

To create a new blog post you just press the Posts tab followed by Write new post. You’ll see the usual text boxes and options that you’d expect find on your Web Browser, such as; Post title, main body text box with font options, a place to add any photos stored on your phone and even a location tag should you want to make use of your phone’s GPS, letting everybody know where you were when you uploaded your post.

Another great add-on is the ability to view your page statistics. In most sections of WordPress for Nokia you can hit the options icon at the bottom of the screen which will display further shortcuts, such as the statistics window. This will give you a detailed overview of the traffic coming to your site over a period of days, weeks or months and will also tell you exactly what they typed in, or what link they pressed to find themselves at your site.

This really is a complete blog maintenance package that does everything you would expect to be able to do on a desktop computer. However, I wouldn’t expect to produce any 5000 word essays from the app as it would take too long to punch in all those words with a small on-screen keypad, but it is really very good for those moments where you need to post something quickly or keep on top of comment moderation.

WordPress for Nokia is available at Ovi Store and is completely free of charge and as it’s written with Qt, it will be available for any Nokia phone with Qt on-board such as the Nokia N900, Nokia N8 and the new Symbian devices coming up.
