PORTLAND, OR, United States – Social media is a major portion of smartphone use these days. Nokia owners want to stay ‘in the know’ while they are out and about and utilizing social networking fits the bill.
Today we’ll take a look at two fantastic apps that are written in Qt, therefore available for Symbian devices such as the Nokia N8 and also for the Nokia N9 as well. fMobi and 4squick have recently received updates that warrant a fresh look at each of these applications.
Foursquare unleashed
Foursquare is a location based service that allows you to check-in to locations, unlock special deals and even game with your friends to become mayor of your favorite spots. 4squick is a very popular Symbian application that unleashed the best of Foursquare for our Symbian and Meego devices. I’ve covered 4squick before and the application just reached a 1.0 version and added a load of new features worth highlighting.
There are two versions of 4squick in the Nokia Store, a free version and a paid version. With the application, you can do the obvious functions such as see locations in your vicinity based on GPS, check-in to them, earn points and become mayor. However, the latest version of 4squick adds functionality including:
- Notifications of friends nearby
- List of your badges earned and a a list of your mayorships
- User Interface modifications and bug fixes.
The paid version (available for just $1.99 in the United States) of 4squick has the same user interface but gives you the ability comment on check-ins, upload photos while at the venue, manage your friends and add a venue.
4squick is a responsive and speedy application that gives a full Foursquare experience to Nokia owners. It should easily be a part of your app folder if you’re a Foursquare user.
Facebook a go go
OK Foursquare is nice, but what about the big daddy when it comes to social networking: Facebook. With 800 million users spread all over the globe, Facebook is definitely the force to be reckoned with.
Being so popular, there are a few applications out there for Facebook on Nokia devices. However, fMobi stands out as a favorite in my circles. This application, also written in Qt, recently bumped up to v2 and received a much-needed update that makes it much more stable. The developer also updated the user interface and main screen when you update status.
fMobi is a full featured Facebook client that allows you to:
- view your newsfeed
- see notifications
- engage in Facebook chats
- check-in to locations
- read messages of friends and groups
- see events and even pages.
This great Facebook client is now available for Symbian Anna and Belle devices with added Symbian device support coming soon.
