Ten cool things that happened in Social Media Week

Nokia Connects has been bringing you up-to-date coverage of the exciting events happening at Social Media Week 2012 around the world. Here are our top ten picks of the past week…

1. Random Acts of Kindness: Sometimes all it takes is a pleasant surprise to make your day. Nokia helped put a smile on the faces of people in London, New York, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Singapore by sending them personalised gifts and free Nokia goodies. Not to mention the legendary Nokia Connects Cab, offering free rides to those in London and New York.

2. SWM12 in words: Social Media Week is all about conversations and connecting people, so what better way to visualise that than in a word cloud of tweets over the past week?

3. Explaining social media to a 91-year-old: Social media are generally believed to be the tools of younger generations, but not so in San Francisco, where a 91-year-old lady got stuck into the technology of today (with a little help from our very own Mr Tom H)!

4. The Inner Net: This spoken word poem about the power (and danger) of social media has been doing the rounds on Twitter this week. Inspiring stuff from David Bowden.

5. Can Man Live On Social Media Alone? Earlier this week we told you about our two social guinea pigs, Daphne and Martin, who were challenged to live for a week in a foreign city using only social media tools available on their Lumia 800 phones. We caught up with Daphne later in the week to find out how she was getting on. She had had a fantastic time in London and was very sad to be leaving after all the kind and wonderful things people had done for her!

6. Social Media Magic: This phrase was trending on Twitter for most of SMW12 and is the brainchild of entrepreneur Tammy Tibbetts. As part of an event promoting her not-for-profit organisation She’s the First at SMW in New York, Tammy proved that social media can be used for social good. For every use of the hashtag #SMWMagic, The Think Cloud donated $1 to help fund the education of a young girl in Africa. An amazing example of how social media can really change lives for the better.

7. Dwitter: That’s “Dating + Twitter” for those of you who don’t know! This event in Hong Kong combined speed dating with social media in order to bring Valentine’s Day into the 21st century.

“As one of the participants [of Dwitter] I have to say it’s a very awesome (first time) experience! The idea is very innovative, love the concept a lot. It’s awesome to see how Social Media can be easily plugged into speed dating, guess this is why we are having social media week.” Mark Shu

8. Amazing Magic Tricks: In New York, Nokia kicked off Social Media Week 2012 with a very exciting hidden magic show.  Here’s a clip of our favourite trick – and prepare to be amazed!

9. UN Global Pulse: This exciting initiative aims to harness today’s world of digital data and real-time analytics in order to “gain a better understanding of changes in human well-being.”  By monitoring the things people are doing and saying online, UN Global Pulse can find out what is happening in the world in real time, and so coordinate humanitarian and aid efforts accordingly. This animated video gives a handy introduction to the initiative and the changes it hopes to make.

10. Seeing the future before it happens: Last, but by no means least, is this quirky little video from Social Media Week 2012 predicting what the hipsters of today will be like in 50 years’ time. If only my grandmother were that cool!
