1. International Women’s Day
This Thursday (March 8th) marked International Women’s Day (I.W.D) 2012, a day to celebrate the amazing everyday achievements of ordinary women around the world. As well as the picture above of women’s-themed shoes in Hyderabad, I thought this photo of 68-year old farmer Ligaya Oria summed up the philosophy behind I.W.D perfectly – according to Oxfam, she decided not to re-marry after the death of her husband when she realised she could cope perfectly well on her own. An inspirational lady!
2. Holi
We’ve already highlighted 5 cool things about Holi, the Hindu festival of colour, which took place on March 8. It’s a fun and colourful way to herald in the new Spring!

3. Purim
Also on March 8 was the Jewish festival of Purim, celebrated by giving gifts of food and drink, and giving charity to the poor. This photo shows a selection of Hamentashen, the traditional Purim snack based on the three-cornered hat worn by Hamen, who sought to destroy the Jews but who’s plan was ultimately foiled.

In the run-up to Easter, the people of London are taking part in the world’s largest easter egg hunt with over 200 individually designed eggs hidden all over the city!

5. Spring blooms
March is officially the first month of Spring, and so I couldn’t possibly do a photo summary of the first week of March without including at least one photo of some beautiful Spring blossom! 🙂
