Why the Nokia Play 360° might just be the best mobile speaker ever

When Thomas Edison invented the world’s first portable music device, the phonograph, people marveled at being able to listen to a single song. Fast forward 125 years and 42% of smartphone users claim to have a collection of between 2000 and 5000 songs. It’s clear mobile music has come a long way and, in that time, it’s been played on a huge variety of machines. But here, at Nokia Connects, we think we have our hands on the best mobile speaker ever. Here’s why.

Dazzling design

It wasn’t long ago that if you wanted to listen to mobile music you had to lug around a device the size of a small suitcase. The Nokia Play 360° has taken mobile speaker design to a whole new level. Engadget called it a “little barrel of omnidirectional audio” and it’s easy to see why. Small enough to fit comfortably in your bag, it’s been especially designed to play your music in a clear 360 degree radius. The premium aluminum case doesn’t just look great, it’s sturdy as well as stylish. There’s also a Nokia Battery BL-5C, which is long lasting, rechargeable and easy to replace. It doubtless these features, which recently earned the Nokia Play 360° the world’s most prestigious industrial design award, the Red Dot. Greats minds, it seems, really do think alike.

Superior sound

Ever since Bell Labs engineers, Chester W. Rice and Edward W. Kellogg invented the first electrostatic loudspeaker in 1921, speakers have delivered sound in one direction only. Until now. The Nokia Play 360° fills every direction, completely and evenly, with your favourite tunes. And besides high treble, the bass reflex chamber ensures rich, deep tones. What’s more, the sweet spot, the perfect place for listening, is substantially increased. This makes the audio clear and undistorted no matter where you are in the room. And, if you invest in two Nokia Play 360°’s you can connect them to enjoy amazing quality stereo surround sound. Bliss!

Perfectly practical

One thing all music lovers share is a hatred of the spaghetti mish mash of wires you get when you connect your music system. Thankfully, the Nokia Play 360° is triple wireless. Firstly, your music is streamed wirelessly from your Bluetooth device. Secondly, thanks to the 21-hour battery life at 60% volume, there is no need for a power cable. Thirdly, if you buy two Nokia Play 360°s, no wires are needed to link them, allowing the left and right channels to play while volume control is synchronized between the speakers. The Nokia Play 360° is also compatible with all phones, music players and other devices, which support Bluetooth v. 2.1 + EDR. What’s more, with just three buttons, it’s super simple to use and if you have an NFC phone, all you do is tap the speaker to blast your tunes out.

As fantastic as this sounds on paper, the reality is even better. We’re not ones to blow our own trumpet but, until someone proves otherwise, we’re sticking to our claim that the Nokia Play 360° is the best there is. If you agree, or disagree, we’d love to hear why in the comments below or @Nokia_Connects
