A Student Makes the Wheelchair More Beautiful, Functional, and Inspirational

An inspiring story of design and problem solving by a design student from New Zealand. Oscar Fernandez’s entry into the Dyson Competition for design, addressed something we perhaps take for granted as solved, that motorized wheelchairs are good enough. Oscar put a tremendous amount of thought and care into his design which allows wheelchair bound users to use the chairs they are comfortable at home as well as out on the go; his solution is to append a current chair with a motorized ‘tug’. Not only does this solution work well, it’s also beautiful.

Brilliant. I hope Oscar wins the grant and competition.
