Nokia's green credentials

Nokia has been named one of the ‘Best Global Green Brands’ of 2012 in a report from brand consultancy Interbrand.

The report measures companies’ performance in environmental sustainability across two measures:

(i) the extent to which they source, produce, and distribute products and services in an environmentally responsible manner; and

(ii) how effectively they convey those values to consumers.

Kirsi Sormunen, Nokia’s VP for Sustainability told us:

“Nokia takes sustainability extremely seriously. We’re working in every area to ensure the products we make, the materials we use, and the wider business that creates and supports them are as environmentally friendly as possible. It’s an on-going process, but we’re delighted with this recognition from Interbrand.”

Last week, we discussed the ways in which Nokia seeks to make its products as environmentally friendly as possible, in decisions ranging from packaging to power adapters. And also the ‘eco-hero’ phones at the vanguard of sustainable practice, with ingredients like bioplastics and recycled metals.

Nokia also recently launched its Sustainability Report for the last year, highlighting our achievements in the area and the many ways in which we’re working to go further.

Acting responsibly in this area is also good business. Now more than ever, consumers expect the businesses they deal with to be socially responsible. A recent report from Nielsen, for example, revealed that in India, “seven in ten online consumers prefer to conduct business with companies that have implemented socially responsible programs”.

How important is the environmental track record of companies to your buying decisions?
