We’ve seen social networking app Foursquare make an appearance on most platforms already, but the app is also now available for the Nokia Asha 501. Discover the world around you, find out what all your friends are up to, tell the world where you are and what you’re doing, and see who’s checking in at the locations closest to you.
The Nokia 501 doesn’t have GPS, but it can still work out approximately where you are by using your network connection. That means you’ll find all the main features you get on the Lumia Foursquare app, such as the ability to check in and tell the world where you are.
The main ‘All activity’ page is effectively a central place to explore, highlight where you’ve checked in, and also shows what your friends are up to. Simply scroll down and tap ‘add friends’ to search for your mates – once you’ve added them you’ll see their check-ins on the All activity page.
Checking in couldn’t be easier: tap the Foursquare check-in icon, tap ‘check in’, and select the location nearest to you.
Click the search icon, and you can see other locations nearby that people have checked in at. Find recent hotspots of activity, and check out what people have written about them – my local pub has a note explaining that it has free Wi-Fi, for example.
There’s also a map for each of the check-ins, and even contact numbers for businesses, so you can see exactly where people or places are, making it easier to find them especially if you’re in a new area.
There’s a profile page to show all your activity, highlighting where you’ve checked in, Mayorships (awarded for the places you check in the most), any photographs you’ve shared using Foursquare and any tips you’ve added. Your profile also shows badges (awarded once you’ve carried out a task for the first time, such as your first check in) and lists.
Pull up the bar from the bottom of Foursquare and you’ll get a few more options: Add friends, Notifications and Settings. This menu changes depending on where you are in the app – open it from the search page and you’ll get a different set of options: Select location, Search nearby, Notifications and Settings.
Foursquare is well worth downloading for your Nokia Asha 501, making it easy to see who’s checking in where, and the places most worth visiting. It’s easy to use, looks good and is quick to respond.
