Ellie Goulding stars in amazing Nokia Lumia 1020 music video

British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has one of those voices, a high piercing vibrato with a breathy tone, which makes you melt inside.

It’s helped her sell three million albums so far and looks set to make her latest single How Long Will I Love You a smash hit, too. The official single for this year’s BBC Children in Need charity campaign, it’s available to pre-order now and can be downloaded from November 10th. Such a beautiful song deserves a beautiful music video, and that’s where Nokia comes in. Or more specifically, the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Lights, Lumia, action!

Ellie, who gave a dazzling performance at Nokia World in 2010, hasn’t just created a new record; she’s created a stunning professional quality High Definition music video…on a Nokia Lumia 1020. To see how the device fared, sit back, turn up the volume and enjoy Ellie’s wonderful new tune.

We’re sure you’ll agree both the record and the video are amazing. But that’s not all. Ellie and Universal also used the Nokia Lumia 1020 to shoot a short film to showcase the song. It’s a beautifully moving story, which doesn’t just show the versatility of the smartphone but of Ellie Goulding as well. However, don’t take our word for it. Grab some popcorn, a bunch of hankies and press play.

This just shows what a much underrated genre the short film is. But the question you’re probably asking is, why did Universal Music, Roger Michell and the production crew choose Nokia Lumia 1020 to shoot the film? Well, it turns out, there’s a variety of answers to that.

The creative challenge and ease of use

Roger Michell, the world-renowned director of films such as Notting Hill and Enduring Love, clearly enjoyed both the freedom the Nokia Lumia 1020 offered and the creative experience.

“I’ve always wanted to make a film as effortlessly as possible and when you normally make feature films you’re encumbered by huge amounts of equipment, massive cameras, very heavy grips equipment. I’ve found I can make quite elegant expressive camera moves with this. And so the idea of being able to turn that into making a proper drama I found quite enticing, a very, very interesting experiment indeed.”

The image quality and ability to experiment

For Gerry Vasbentor, Director of Photography, the Nokia Lumia 1020’s stunning image quality combined with its versatility proved to be the highlight.

“It’s an exciting phone. I have to keep reminding myself it is a phone because I’m treating it as a motion picture camera. However, it delivers imagery I hadn’t thought possible with a mobile phone. It’s quite special.”

“I can do just hand held. It works brilliantly. The back of a car. I jumped over a fence. There are all sort of exciting shots I’ve always wanted to try but haven’t been able to do prior to this.”

The authenticity and practicality

Lynsey Muir, 1st Assistant Director, was wowed by the pureness of the image and the ability to shoot challenging scenes very quickly.

“There’s no lens trickery involved. It’s literally using the phone for everything we’re capturing.  We did a scene at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and we had our lovely actor Dylan in nothing more than a pair of superman boxer shorts. We were there for ten minutes shooting on the steps, if that.”

Short and sweet

In our opinion, the video and film show why the Nokia Lumia 1020 is undisputedly the world’s best camera smartphone. In fact, if the “you” in Ellie’s question How Long Will I Love You were a Nokia Lumia 1020, our answer would be “a very long time indeed.”

We think the combination of the wonderful Ellie Goulding, the incredible movie making crew and the Nokia Lumia 1020 is golden. But what about you? As ever, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
