Cover to cover by the Lumia 1020
Illustrious Centrefold magazine partners with Nokia and nine international photographers to create its tenth issue, shot exclusively with the Lumia 1020.
In 2003, Andrew G Hobbs founded a magazine that allowed world-renowned photographers to showcase their work in an original, large-format approach that put the picture at the heart of the story.
Centrefold is a bi-annual, A2 (420 x 594mm) folding poster publication that exhibits established and emerging artists in the fashion, art and design industries.
For its tenth ‘Beyond’ issue, Centrefold has pushed the boundaries of innovation once more; the entire magazine was shot with a Nokia Lumia 1020.
Photographer Tung Walsh, who photographed top-model, Lily McMenamy, in Paris for the issue, said:
“I was blown away by the amount of detail I was getting. It was really incredible that a phone could produce these results, I think also the shots became more intimate, shooting in a more gung-ho approach!”
Many of us here at Conversations have edited national magazines, so the concept of using a smartphone as the sole photographic source is quite exceptional and testament to the Lumia 1020’s imaging prowess.
The 41-megapixel PureView sensor, ZEISS optics, optimised image stabilisation, f/2.2 apeture, 3x optical zoom and myriad Pro Camera features all combine to allow flexibility similar to that of larger, dedicated cameras.
Just as importantly, the quality of the Lumia 1020’s images allows them to be printed at a clear and large enough resolution for the magazine’s super-sized A2 format.
Four unique covers featuring emerging models Sam Rollinson, Eliza Cummings, Lily McMenamy, and Zuzanna Bijoch will be available as limited-edition issues.
Centrefold will also celebrate its collaboration with Nokia at a London exhibition, featuring all nine of the photographers’ work alongside behind the scenes films (see below).

“The question was this: what could nine contemporary photographers do with a smartphone? We gave them the Nokia Lumia 1020, the freedom to shoot anything, anywhere in the world. It took them from the secluded beaches of Mexico, Inside the New York art scene, over to a rapidly changing China, Centrefold Issue 10 is their response.”
Contributing photographer Tang Ting said:
“My dream camera would be a camera which is as tiny as possible that I can take with me anywhere any- time, low profile, always ready to capture unpredictable moments. At the same time, it has full manual controls and produces fantastic images far beyond those from compact cameras. I think Nokia made that happen.”
