Our favourite 5 new Windows Phone apps of the week

It’s been a long week since last Saturday: how have you fared in the fantastic world of Windows Phone apps? Discovered any gems?

Well, sit back, take a breath, and let us step up to the plate. We’re here to make your Lumia loving days easier. So here, without further ado, are the best five apps – new or newly updated – that we’ve uncovered in the past seven days.

Boxcryptor

What is it: A file-encrypting app

Why we love it: This lets you secure your files before you upload them to cloud-based storage systems like OneDrive and DropBox. Your password doesn’t leave the app and it’s encrypted using the AES-256 standard, so you can be sure everything is safe. What’s more, it’s easy to use and supports a wide range of cloud services.

Who it’s perfect for: Security-conscious mobile workers.

Pirates Don’t Run

What is it? And endless runner game

Why we love it: Okay, this is slight cheat, as it’s been out a little more than a week, but we’ve got to include it because we’re got to respect a game where you’re being chased by a horde of skeletons… Run, jump, slide, collect coins and, best of all, read an exclusive online comic about the characters. Fun on multiple levels!

Who it’s perfect for: gamers of all ages

McDonalds

What is it? The official McDonald’s UK app for Windows Phone

Why we love it: Other regions have already had McDonald’s apps, but now it’s the UK’s turn. Check out menu and nutritional information about meals, find nearby branches and their opening hours and other facilities, suss out current promotions and play in-app games to win prizes. It’s handy and informative – exactly what you’d want in a fast-food app.

Who it’s perfect for: Fast food fanatics

SplitPic

What is it? A photo collage app

Why we love it: This lets you combine up to six different pictures into a fabulous composite portrait: make it a seamless super-picture or apply an artistic bricolage effect: either way, it’ll transform your images and make you rethink the way you shoot. You can load shots from your pre-existing albums or take new photos; then add borders, blurs, filters and change the focus. A nice addition to the WP photography portfolio of apps.

Who it’s perfect for: photographers of all abilities

Flipkart

What is it? Official mobile version of the online shopping site

Why we love it: One for our Indian readers: finally, a WP app for the online superstore, Flipkart. Shop by category with this really accessible interface, pay from within the app with card, vouchers or cash on delivery, and track your purchase online. Simple to browse and simple to buy: top marks all round!

Who it’s perfect for: Online bargain hunters
