Lumia Instagramer of the Week: Brayan Mesa

Just over a month ago Instagram shared the amazing fact that over 20 billion photos had been shared by its community since its launch in 2010. Every day another 60 million are uploaded. Whatever way you look at it Instagram is awash with pics.

However, not all photos are created equal. This is one reason we’ve been busy featuring the finest Lumia photographers out there. The other is from the sheer joy of showcasing breathcatching visual gems taken on the world’s finest camera smartphones. This week’s photographer is no different. American Brayan Mesa, based in the beautiful city of Boston, takes stunning photos of urban landscapes making you look at the every day in a very different way. To see for yourself check out his top ten picks below, but before let’s hear what Brayan has to say about life with his Lumia.

Thanks joining us, Brayan. First question, which Lumia do you have and what do most like about it?

Right now, I have been using the Nokia Lumia 1020 for about two months. I am part of the #lumiainfocus project. My favorite thing about the Lumia 1020 is that it is unlike anything that you have seen before. It is very responsive and very modern and has the most impressive camera that I have ever seen on a phone. Not only does the camera take high quality pictures, the Smart Cam app allows users to manually change settings just like a real camera.

Where do you shoot most of your photos and what sort of photos do you like to take best?

When I first received the Lumia 1020, I took it on my trip to Seattle, Washington. It completely replaced the camera that I was going to bring with me. There, I took a variety of shots, but mostly in urban settings. Here in Boston, I also use it in an urban setting. I love taking pictures of the beautiful city of Boston and everything it has to offer and the Lumia 1020 has allowed me to have more detailed photos. I have also begun working on portraits and have noticed that the Lumia 1020 is great for portraits due to the amount of details it captures.

What are your top tips for taking Instagram photos on your Lumia?

My top tip for taking Instagram photos on the Nokia Lumia would definitely be to get familiar with the settings on Smart Cam. Once you are familiar with the settings and how everything works, you can start to see what style of photography you are into. It is very important to explore as much as possible. Take pictures of people, buildings, nature, the sky, clothes, anything. Eventually, you will begin to find what you enjoy taking pictures of and can begin perfecting that. I would highly recommend using the cameras grid; this will help you take straight pictures. Lastly, in some circumstances you might not want to use auto focus, play around with the manual focus and at night you can create images with bokeh. Play around with the settings and get creative.
