Deep Dive: world’s fastest texting with Word Flow
One of the winning features of Windows Phone 8.1 is Word Flow – the world’s fastest smartphone keyboard.
How fast? Guinness Book of World Records-breaking fast, as this video demonstrates.

In just 18.44 seconds Gaurav Sharma, a student at Lakeside High School in Seattle broke the record, typing this:
“The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack humans.”
This was possible because of Word Flow with shape writing, the same technology available on Windows Phone 8.1.
Outside of the world record-breaking environment and on your Windows Phone 8.1 powered smartphone, such as the Lumia 630 and Lumia 930, Word Flow can be found whenever you see the on-screen QWERTY keyboard.
Whether you’re searching for somebody in the People Hub, typing a search term into the Internet Explorer 11 address bar or writing an SMS or an email, Word Flow is already loaded and raring to go.
Rather than typing each letter individually, simply place your finger on the first letter you wish to type and slide your finger from one letter to the next until you’ve finished the word.
Repeat the process for each word until you’ve finished what you want to write.
As you type you’ll notice a trace line of your swiping actions, plus some suggestions and predictions positioned just above the keyboard.
If you’re stuck for the right word to use, Word Flow can suggest one based on the context of your conversation. And, it’s also this same contextual understanding that helps Word Flow autocorrect any mis-types (or should that be mis-swipes?).
Word Flow in Windows Phone 8.1 has an increased words library across many languages, making it easier for you to always send the right message. The library also includes the names from your People Hub.
Word Flow – with shape writing – is already available on the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer’s Preview, but will be available to all Windows Phone 8.1 smartphones once it starts rolling out this summer.
Are you looking forward to using Word Flow with shape writing? Or, do you think you could beat the 18.44 seconds world record?
