Attention new grads: Windows Phone Apps for job-hunting
Do you know someone who’s just graduated from university? Are you a newly minted graduate yourself? If so, congratulations! You’ve worked hard and earned your degree.
Now, it’s time to get to work!
Lucky for you, there are more useful tools than ever to help find that ever-important first job. So instead of blindly mailing your resume to employers or scrolling through out-dated job databases, let the combined power of your Lumia and these handy apps work for you. No tip required.
JobLens
JobLens makes finding a job like a treasure hunt. Using augmented reality tech powered by HERE maps, the app scans the buildings around you to see if the companies inside are hiring people. JobLens mines the databases of LinkedIn, Indeed, Salary.com and the real-estate service, Zillow, to find these opportunities, which you can see on an interactive map.
You can pinpoint the types of jobs you’d like (e.g. “financial” or “social media”) and filter them according to salary requirements, proximity, and other factors. The app also ties into your LinkedIn or Facebook accounts to recommend jobs based on your skills. And once you find jobs that may be a good fit, you can save them and track your job-application progress via tasks such as “review CV and cover letter” and “prep for interview.”
getHired
getHired is a simple-but-powerful job-search app that blends eight job databases, including Indeed, CareerBuilder and SimplyHired, across 60 countries to display jobs on one page.
A neat feature of getHired: You can pin recent searches and job summaries to your Start Screen for immediate access to jobs you’re interested in. You can search for jobs based on radius, key words and other settings and save the ones you want on a favorites list, as well as share them via email or text message.
LinkedIn
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you know that LinkedIn is the social network for the professional workplace. If you haven’t already, create your online profile (work experience, skills and education) on a computer immediately.
Once you do, and download the app, LinkedIn will recommend jobs that may be a good match and help you keep up with your professional network as well as companies (e.g. “Microsoft”) and groups (e.g. “LinkedIn for Journalists”) you’re interested in.
Similar to Facebook, you can also post status updates straight from the app, so you can notify your network immediately after you accepted that plum job offer.
Mint
Once you start your job — and even before you do — download Mint to help you save money, track your spending, and create and follow a budget.
Described as a “simple, elegant solution to a complicated monetary world,” Mint aggregates your financial information (credit cards, checking and savings accounts, loans, etc.) so you can monitor your accounts no matter where you are.
The app can also post live updates of your account activity on your start screen if you choose, and remind you of upcoming bills, low balances, and unusual activity via text or email.
TripIt
Think of TripIt as your personal travel organizer. The free app places all of your travel itineraries into one place, from your flight information to your hotel and rental-car reservations. From there, you can sync plans with your online calendar and share them via email or social media.
If you’re a budding jet-setter, upgrade to TripIt Pro (30-day free trial, $49/year). You’ll get additional features such as real-time flight alerts, notifications if a better seat is available, and alternate flight info if your flight is late or canceled. You can also store all of your travel reward-program points in one spot.
OneDrive
If TripIt is your all-in-one place for travel, and Mint is your one-stop shop for your finances, OneDrive is the one place for everything else!
Store and share your work portfolio, cover letters, photos, videos and other multimedia on OneDrive, and you’ll be able to access them anytime, whether it’s on your smartphone, tablet or computer.
