Our 5 favourite new Windows Phone apps of the week

Another week, another blissful seven days of exploring the nooks and crannies of the Window Store – what’s that? You haven’t had the time to dig deep and download like your life depended on it?

Well, never mind – we’ve done the hard work for you! Scroll down to read about our top five finds from the past seven days: apps that are either brand new or so newly revamped that they’ve had us gasping in admiration. You won’t be disappointed…

Subway Surfers

What is it: an infinite running game

Why we love it: We know, we know, this isn’t a new game, but wait up: the latest update means that it’s now compatible with 512MB devices! This means that this massively popular game is now available for the first time to a huge sector of WP users, which is excellent news. As well as this, the gaming world now includes Paris – ooh, la, la! – as well as some new outfits for the avatars and a very sci-fi-tastic Teleporter board. Hop on!

Who it’s perfect for: gamers

Snapcam

What is it: a service for creating and ordering photobooks

Why we love it: A partnership between Qualcomm Snapdragon (the processor folk) and Xerox, this nifty app allows you to make print-ready photobooks straight from your WP device – so there’s no more messing about with file-sharing and uploading to websites. Create an album of your favourite snapshots, edit the pictures (nothing too fancy, but it’ll crop, rotate and add a few filters) and then select your photobook of choice – softcover, hardcover, etc. Fiddle with the book if necessary (swap out a few shots, choose a theme), and then order your print copy from within the app. There’s even a first-time user discount. It’s pretty cheap and very easy to use; while we haven’t actually ordered a book yet, we’d love to hear about your experiences if you have!

Who it’s perfect for: photographers

BBC iPlayer Radio

What is it: An app for BBC radio stations

Why we love it: iPlayer is the BBC’s catch-up service, and thus far there’s been no official radio version for WP users, as TV has its own separate app. Anyway, now radio is on board too, so you can listen to live to all the BBC stations and check out a large selection of on-demand shows. This isn’t a native app, sadly, but as far as web-wrappers go, we’ve seen a lot worse. Enjoy, but watch out for data consumption and regional restrictions.

Who it’s perfect for: UK radio listeners

Files&Folders Pro

What is it: A file-manager

Why we love it: This is a WP8.1 app, but we know that more and more of you have already upgraded, so we thought we’d flag this one up as it’s now available on both Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1, which makes it a pretty handy app to get onto your various Windows devices, pronto. Anyway, it’s a file manager, similar to Microsoft’s own Files; it does all you’d hope for, like copying, renaming, moving folders, opening and extracting files and linking to OneDrive and Dropbox. Free to download!

Who it’s perfect for: organized folk (with WP8.1 devices)

Extreme Forklifting

What is it: a forklift-driving game!

Why we love it: Look, we know you’ve always wanted to drive a forklift, just like you’ve always wanted to have a tractor race. We’ve all dreamt about it… And now, luckily, we can simulate the experience from the safety of our phones! Use your truck to move pallets about according to the on-screen directions. You’ll have to steer and drive the vehicle itself as well as raising and lowering the lifting section (hey, we’re not down with the lingo!), so there’s a bit of a learning curve. It’s a bot of a one-trick pony, but a fun ride while it lasts!

Who it’s perfect for: gamers (and construction workers)

So: what did you think? It’s hard to narrow it down to five every week, so if you’ve got a newbie you think we missed, please let us know in the comments so that the rest of our readers can hear about it, too – we’re all app-fans, here!
