Our 5 favourite new Windows Phone apps of the week

Ah, autumn. Don’t you just love it? Everything’s changing, the shades of light, the weather, the colour of the leaves and, of course, the Windows Phone store.

As ever, this week, a ton of new apps and updates have arrives, which we think you’re going to love as much as a hot cup of cocoa in front of a crackling fall fire. This week’s list features a little something for everyone: brainy games, racing games, creativity boosters, navigational help, and a huge new messaging app. So pull off those fuzzy mittens and start downloading, because these are apps you definitely don’t want to miss!

Skype Qik

What is it: A mobile-only video messaging app

Why we love it: There’s a lot to love about the newest release from the video messaging masters over at Skype! Skype Qik lets you send short video messages, up to 42 seconds long, either one-on-one or in a group, and even when not everyone is online at the same time. Using it is a breeze because you won’t need a pesky username and password, just your phone number. Sent videos self-destruct after 2 weeks, but you can pre-record up to 12 vids for super quick responses. And best of all, it’s incredibly simple to use – just shoot your video and send!

Who it’s perfect for: People that think text messages are too impersonal and Douglas Adams fans

Skype Qik

Iconic

What is it: A minimalistic puzzle game

Why we love it: The tag line for Flow Studio’s Iconic is “Crack the visual code”, and that’s precisely your goal in this fun and simple game. The game gives you a series of icons which stand for pop culture references, and your job is to guess the reference by using your knowledge of the “visual language” we encounter every day. It’s a neat concept coupled with a clean and colorful design, so be sure to check it out!

Who it’s perfect for: Fans of word games and brain teasers

Iconic

Cars: Fast as Lightning

What is it: The official Disney-Pixar Cars racing game

Why we love it: Start your engines, because in this game you can race customizable cars and build the town of Radiator Springs! Featuring Lightening McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), you’ll get to choose from 20 Cars characters and customize your own race cars and tracks. Compete with friends, customize the town, and put the pedal to the metal!

Who it’s perfect for: Kids that love Cars

View

What is it: A third-party app for Behance

Why we love it: Coming from developer Golden Chopper, View is a client app for users of creatives network Behance. It lets you explore the projects, works in progress, creatives, and collections of Behance. You can search, share, add, filter, browse creative work from around the world to your heart’s content. And even better, it’s free!

Who it’s perfect for: Creatives that use Behance

CoPilot GPS

What is it: An offline map app

Why we love it: Navigational tool CoPilot GPS has been around for awhile, but it received some huge updates this week. Now it not only lets you store detailed maps on your phone and get driving and walking directions, but the new version comes with updated North American and European maps, a new ActiveRoutes feature that calculates the best route to your destination based on actual road speeds, and an enhanced MotionLock feature. They’ve also added a map of India!

Who it’s perfect for: Travelers that want access to offline maps
