Fitbit Update: Cortana, Challenges and More

The Fitbit app for Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan has just been updated with Cortana integration and other goodies to help keep you healthy.

If you’re a member of the legions of step-counting Fitbit users out there (like me), you’ll want to have the latest version of this free app. We wrote about it earlier this year when the app debuted in the Windows Phone Store.

Now, here are brand-new updates to the Fitbit app to better guide you on on the road to fitness.

Cortana integration: Instead of laboriously typing in what you had for dinner, just say aloud what you ate and drank, like “Fitbit, I ate lasagna for dinner” or “Fitbit, I had a coffee with cream for breakfast” and the items will be added to your daily meal log.

With more than 350,000 foods in the Fitbit database, your meal items will be recognized. Currently, this feature is available only in the U.S.

Challenges: Directly compete with up to 10 friends or family members to meet and beat goals. The competitions include Daily Showdown, Workweek Hustle and Weekend Warrior. Personally, I love that feature since it gives me more motivation to keep up my daily running regimen.

MobileTrack: Don’t have a Fitbit? Don’t worry, you can still get in on the action. Lumia smartphones with MobileTrack enable motion data to accurately track steps.

Background Sync and Push: Set up notifications on Challenges, progress updates, messages and more so you’ll always be the first to know who’s ahead or how many steps you need to complete to meet your daily goal. You can also set up reminders in case you get busy and forget to log your meals.

So give the new, updated Fitbit app a whirl and let us know how it works for you.

And if you want to start a Challenge on Fitbit, feel free to add me. But be forewarned: I’m training for a marathon, so my Fitbit is working overtime!
