Our 5 favourite new Windows Phone apps of the week

As the holidays draw nearer, the Windows Phone Store is stocking up on tons of new apps and updates in preparation for the post-Christmas downloading boom.

While this is great news for those that are expecting to find a shiny new Lumia under their tree, it’s also good for those of us that already have the gift of Lumia. We sorted through the piles of new apps, games, and updates to find the five that we think will make you the merriest – read on to find out which ones we picked.

Why we love it: There’s some good reasons why Zynga Poker is the world’s number 1 free online Texas Hold ‘Em Poker game. Regardless of whether you’re a beginner or a pro, you’ll love the huge variety of tables, including casual games and top tournaments. What’s more, it’s got super simple controls fantastic animations and real world prizes. Now, where’s my chips?

Who it’s perfect for: card games fans

Gestures Beta

What is it: an app that lets you control your Lumia hands-free

Why we love it: Gestures Beta is a free app that lets you do some pretty cool things. For example, to answer a call, all you have to do is raise your phone to your ear. To mute your microphone, simply place your phone face-down on a flat surface. If you place it face-up, you’ll switch to speaker.

Who it’s perfect for: Everyone who wants an easier life

Candy Crush Saga

What is it: a match-three puzzle game

Why we love it: Candy Crush Saga probably doesn’t need an introduction because we all know and love this highly addictive game. With hundreds of levels and a leaderboard to satisfy your competitive nature, this sweet game will keep you busy for hours. So if you think you’re up for the challenge, join Tiffi and Mr. Toffee in their journey through the Candy Kingdom – and best of all, it’s free.

Who it’s perfect for: game lovers of any age

Netflix (update)

What is it: a TV and movie subscription service

Why we love it: If you’ve got a Netflix account, you can get the most out of your subscription by getting the app, which lets you watch shows and films anyplace, anytime. A great app became even greater this week with a few important updates such as a new UI, higher video quality, the option to pin your favorite content to your start screen, and Cortana integration. Version 4.0 also includes the ability to select profiles and has post-play support.

Who it’s perfect for: TV and movie junkies

Flipboard (update)

What is it: a social news magazine

Why we love it: Flipboard lets you create your own “magazines” that can be about any subject available online, a handy tool for catching up on the latest news and reading online articles. The app had previously only been available for 1GB RAM devices, which left many Lumia lovers in the dark. Happily, now that version 2.5 is out, devices with 512MB can also start creating, flipping, and loving their own magazines. In addition to this big update, the overall experience is much smoother and improved.
