How a Lumia 930’s helping Martin Szwed conquer the South Pole alone

The American author William Feather once said, “One way to get the most out of life is to look upon it as an adventure.”

Here at Lumia Conversations, we agree 110%, which is why we always have our trusty Lumias at hand to help live life to the max. One man taking this philosophy to a whole new amazing level is Martin Szwed, an inspiring German adventurer who loves to challenge himself, over and over again. In fact, at this very moment, he’s doing that in spectacular style by making a solo trip to the South Pole.

Ain’t no mountain high enough

Martin Szwed began his journey, after a year of training, on December 24th last year. His goal is to become the first person to travel solo to the South Pole and climb Antarctica’s highest peak, Mt. Vinson. And if that weren’t tough enough, Martin, a physicist turned pro mountain climber, is also battling cancer. Diagnosed in 2006, his doctors admit that he should have been dead five years ago, but Martin is still going strong, climbing the world’s tallest and toughest peaks and inspiring people around the world to get the most out of life.

Lumia on hand to help

The 33-year-old professional mountain climber has already completed four of the Seven Summits, a mountain climbing feat that involves reaching the summits of the highest peaks on each continent. Upon successfully conquering Vinson, he’ll be able to add it to his list along with Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Elbrus, and Denali. Although Martin is undertaking the challenging journey to one of the world’s most hostile areas alone and unaided, he’ll have his Lumia at his side to help him during the trek. In fact, he’ll be taking along two Lumia 930s and a Surface Pro 3, as well as Tespack technology, on his expedition, which will not only support him during the journey, but also let Martin share his travels with you and the rest of the world. Martin will be using OneDrive to store notes, photos and videos, OneNote as his journal throughout the trip, the Fitbit app to track his progress, and MAPS to help him navigate his adventure.

A South Pole selfie

In order to stay in touch with the outside world, Martin will be using the Surface Pro 3 to contact German TV via Skype (and friends and family, of course) and updating when he can on Facebook and Twitter. Naturally, he’ll be documenting the entire amazing journey using the Lumia 930s imaging power, capturing photos and HD video of his snowy surroundings, milestones, and himself in action. It doesn’t get much more inspiring than a selfie at the South Pole!

If you’re as eager as us to follow Martin’s adventure, you’re in luck. Martin might be taking on this huge challenge all by himself, but we’ll be sharing his progress on both Connects Twitter and Instagram. Our aim is to keep you up to date with photos and screenshots of his journal and map as he scales Mt. Vinson and makes his way across the remote ice deserts of the world’s coldest and windiest continent. So be sure to stay tuned for updates as Martin battles the elements to make history.
