Keep warm and save money with the Tado app for Windows Phone

Save up to 31 percent off your heating bill by pairing the free Tado app for Windows Phone 8.1 with the Tado Internet-connected thermostat.

Brrr, baby, it’s cold outside, as the holiday classic song goes. This winter, large swaths of the globe are in a deep freeze, which begs the question: How can you keep your home cozy and warm but avoid high heating bills?

One answer is Tado, a smart thermostat–and its related Tado app–that automatically adjusts the temperature in your home based on your daily routine. The Munich, Germany-based Tado company claims that the smart thermostat and app helps customers save up to 31 percent annually on their heating bills.

Via the app, you can set the thermostat (which can be used in both houses and apartments) for the most comfortable temperature when you’re at home, when you’re asleep, and when you’re out of the house. The app detects when the last person in your house leaves for work or school and turns down the thermostat to a cooler temperature.

The Tado Windows Phone app can also tell when the first person in your family starts heading home and gradually turns up the heat so it’s nice and toasty when he or she walks in through the front door.

Pretty nifty!

No matter where you are, the Tado app for Windows Phone displays: your home’s current temperature; current mode and operation; visualization of temperature and heating reports; newsfeed on system activity; and heating-cost prediction, among more options.

Here’s something else that’s smart about Tado: The thermostat adapts to the heating properties of your home, such as the amount of proper insulation and number of windows, as well as your local weather forecast. So if the outside temperature rises by 10 degrees Fahrenheit over a day, the thermostat and app will adjust to account for the difference.

By the way, the company says that the name “tado” was derived from the Japanese greetings “tadaima” and “okaeri,” which loosely translate as “I’m home” and “Welcome home.”

So, tell us: What do you think about Tado? It sounds like the app and Internet-connected thermostat will ensure you won’t feel winter’s chill.
